An automotive catalytic converter is a key exhaust aftertreatment device installed in the exhaust line of gasoline, diesel and natural-gas vehicles to reduce harmful emissions. It consists of a metal canning that houses a ceramic or metallic honeycomb substrate coated with a washcoat containing precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium or other active materials. Under high exhaust temperatures, the catalyst promotes oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), thereby converting them mainly into carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen. Depending on engine and regulation, systems include three-way catalysts (TWC) for stoichiometric gasoline engines, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units for NOx control and catalysed particulate filters (DPF/GPF). Catalytic converters are typically located close to the engine or further downstream and work together with oxygen/NOx sensors and engine or urea-dosing control strategies to meet stringent emission standards (e.g., Euro 6/7, China 6/7, US Tier 3) while balancing backpressure, durability and cost, making them a core component of exhaust-emission control for conventional and hybrid vehicles.
