This year FASMA was a proud sponsor, and FASMA doctors were part of the medical team which provided medical care for triathlon participants. They set up in the medical tent at the finish line and worked closely with physicians from other specialties such as orthopedics and internal medicine to provide supportive care to the race participants.An essential component of triathlon training that many athletes may overlook are preventative techniques, such as stretching, strength training and rest. These important measures can help to avert painful injuries. Injuries are not an act of nature. They indicate that the athlete has reached a breakdown point which the body can no longer maintain. The body is pushed past its reparative capabilities and begins to develop signs and symptoms of injury.Shoes are critical equipment for triathletes. The wrong size shoes can cause painful blisters and become uncomfortable if they dont allow enough room for swelling. Long distance runners often lose toenails during races, which is another reason shoes should be bought slightly larger.Most causes of foot pain in athletes can be attributed to over training. Podiatrists advise pulling back on the amount of training when athletes feel initial pain to allow the inflammation or injury to resolve. If pain persists more than a week, athletes should seek medical attention.When patients come to our office, it because they are already experiencing pain or an ailment.
