Ana Gutiérrez’s Road to Becoming a Costa Rica Fashion Designer

The years went by and Ana, who became a mom at an early age, worked hard for her little son and to preserve the legacy of her parents in which work is fundamental.

Leaving the fashion aside (temporarily), she trained in business administration and studied to become a chef at the Le Cordon Bleu cooking school.

Her strength and eagerness to achieve what she had always dreamed of in the field of fashion, motivated her, after her 30 years, to enroll in a jewelry course. The passion for design that inspired her in her youth was awaken again.

“As a hobby I went into jewelry design classes and started making pieces for myself; A cousin saw me and asked me to design something. From that moment more buyers began to emerge and everything became a business, “said Ana.

At 46, Ana has spent a decade dedicated to what she started as a hobby, and today is her source of income. In addition to the design of jewelry for ladies – inspired by the Costa Rican nature – it has its line of purses and clothing.

Currently, the woman who started doing inventory at her father’s banana farm has three stores: one in Lindora, one in Juan Santamaria Airport and one in Las Vegas, United States. Her designs are exhibited at the premises. Some of the pieces are one of a kind and garments are sold only on request.

How did you manage to keep your company for 10 years? Gutiérrez gives all merit to the effort, innovation and loyalty of its clients.

“I believe that one of the formulas to stay in the Costa Rican market is to innovate. The market is small and saturates fast, people get tired, they get bored, they like the new, the original. Keeping up has also been possible thanks to my clients; I have had the great happiness of having very loyal customers who have bought my products during the 10 years. I have had support, that is very important, without it a brand does not survive, ” said the businesswoman.

When Gutierrez talks about innovation, she also refers to the design of jewelry and smart clothing, which she created with Intel last May.

In addition to the delicacy of her jewels worked with gold, silver, semiprecious stones and leather, and the fine finishes of her purses and garments, Ana’s figure excels in the panorama of tico design thanks to the presence abroad.

Ana stated that the presence abroad is thanks to a contact of a friend who helped her crossover to the United States market.

“It has been two years since the brand has positioned itself. The market in Las Vegas is a little slow, taking into account that the population there is floating, buyers are not maintained, they are nomads. However, this opportunity abroad allows the brand to be known abroad. There are many people who after buying in Las Vegas enter the website of Ana Gutierrez and buy, ” she said.

Ana says that “one door opens the other”. After receiving a prize in 2007 for the best accessory designer at Miami Fashion Week, the opportunities began to arrive.

The success that this Costa Rican has achieved has been reflected even on the red carpet.”In 2009, the pieces (jewelry) of Ana Gutiérrez were in the gift bags for the Oscar nominees.

Many years ago Ana stopped using that knitting machine that changed her future, but she never let go of the desire to achieve “the dream” by working hard.

Beauty vlogger Chloe Morello explains why POWDER makes the best primer when applied before your foundation

Earlier this year, she revealed she shaves her face in pursuit of a silky smooth complexion.

And now, beloved Australian beauty YouTuber, Chloe Morello, has let the world in on another of her skin secrets, revealing that she applies powder instead of regular primer before her foundation.

Classy Long White Tailor Made Evening Prom Dress (LFNAE0056)

In a video shared with her two million YouTube followers last week, the 26-year-old social media star explained why she finds powder to be the best primer.

Chloe Morello also recommended her followers try the trick, especially if their skin is on the oily side.

‘Normally, all my primers are either liquid primers or a cream, but I’ve been using this for the past three weeks now, and it is amazing!,’ Ms Morello said towards the beginning of the eight minute video.

‘I like it because I don’t have to powder over the top as it’s already got that really matte finish.’

The vlogger then showed just how the Make-up Store Australia powder primer works as a mattifying product, by applying it to one half of her face and leaving the other half without any product.

After applying foundation to both sides of her face, one half of her skin looked matte, while the other was luminescent and dewy.

‘This side of my face just looks so much more smooth,’ Ms Morello said.

‘And then this side of my face… you can still see my pores. It’s just like my skin before, but with an even colour.’

For those who might not have the AUD $75 required to buy the powder that Chloe Morello uses in her video, other beauty experts have similar – and cheaper – recommendations.

Montréal-based makeup pro Eddie Malter, from L’Oréal Paris, said that any powder dusted over the face before you apply foundation helps to give your make-up something to stick to.

The idea is that powder holds onto make-up better than a primer, especially in hot temperatures when your skin hits overdrive with oil production.

Other experts have even gone as far as to suggest that baby powder works in much the same way as primer – a great base coat for a fraction of the price.

Something to bear in mind during humid times…

Here Are 5 Beauty Trends That Should Stay In 2016

Yes, we all are grateful in some way or the other that this year is coming to an end. Not only has 2016 been a rollercoaster ride for all of us, but even the beauty industry witnessed some strange trends. Think about saplings manicure, claw nails, and all things unicorn – even unicorn highlighter. We appreciate evolution in beauty, but here are five major trends that we feel should stay in 2016.

Bold boxy eyebrows

bold-boxy-eyebrows.jpg

pics:cocktail dresses

Yes, we know that thin eyebrows are not the trend de jour. We are not talking about the un-groomed eyebrows (we love those). It’s about the boxy Instagram brows. There is something about those boxy lines and the dramatic arch that makes the eyebrows look fake. Your brows can still look full, but you want them to be soft.

Claw nails

claw-nails.jpgCan these just be gone already? We thought that they wouldn’t make a return after 2015, but they came back looking sharper than ever. Let’s not make them a mainstay in the coming year. After all, they are not even practical.

Kylie Jenner lips

kylie-jenner-lips.jpgWe don’t understand the obsession with over-lined and over-injected lips. Yes, lining your lips a bit with a nude liner to create a fuller version works. But, going all they way out to inject to the degree that makes your pout looks bee-stung is just not cool. This practice not only looks fake, but also makes your face appear bigger than it is. It’s time we bid adieu to it.

Heavy strobe

heavy-strobe.jpgWe are not asking you to give up on your highlighter. We love strobing. High-beam cheekbones may gain you a lot of “likes” on social media, but an intense strobe doesn’t necessarily look great IRL. You don’t want your make-up to look chunky, you want it to look flawless. So, dust your highlighter with a light hand.

Super matte lips

matte-lips-.jpgAgain, liquid lipsticks look great in pictures, but their texture is not very flattering. They give a very dry feeling and the lips start cracking in no time. If you still love your matte lipstick then make sure to exfoliate your lips, and keep your pout well hydrated so that it glides easily.

Kim Kardashian debuts a LIP RING as she returns to public eye after 3 months away

Kim Kardashian has made a stunning return to the public eye – by going all-out to make an entrance at her family’s glamorous Christmas Eve party.

Wearing a plunging gold cocktail dresses and a statement black and gold choker necklace, Kim appeared to be back to her old self as she blew kisses on sister Khloe Kardashian’s Snapchat.

She even wore a lip ring as she showed off her toned body and looked even slimmer after 12 weeks out of the spotlight.

“Look who it is in the house, Mrs West in the building!” exclaimed Khloe as she panned her camera over Kim.

“How to-die – how dope is my f***ing sister? Look at this dress, look at the jewellery. You are a bad-ass bitch, Kim.”

Last night’s party in LA marks a turning point in Kim’s recovery from her armed robbery in Paris back at the start of October. Since then she’s been keeping a low profile, only wearing dark clothes and minimal makeup on the rare occasions she’s left her home.

There was no sign of Kanye West at the swanky do, although their three-year-old daughter North West was there, dressed to the nines in a designer dress.

“Look at Northie in her little Alexander Wang custom cocktail dresses uk, she loves it,” said Kim as she took over Khloe’s Snapchat. “Llook at Koko. Woahoo!”

Kim wasn’t wearing her wedding ring either, despite being seen with it on just last week as she and Kanye went on a date to a restaurant in Santa Monica – a date that was quickly branded ‘fake’ by cynics.

Kim posed with Khloe, Kourtney and little sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, along with Kris and Caitlyn, at the bash, which had performances from John Legend inside an opulently decorated venue.

The Kardashians even welcomed Scott Disick back into the fold, with Kylie captioning a Snapchat of him being hugged by Khloe as “family forever”.

He didn’t appear to be drinking at the event, although it’s not known yet whether he’s given up alcohol in order to deal with his issues around it.

Kylie, wearing a skin-tight black sequinned catsuit, was all over boyfriend Tyga, who wore a fairly unfestive tracksuit to the ‘do.

Earlier, the pair had exchanged Christmas presents – Kylie got a diamond necklace that looked a lot like momager Kris’s… maybe Tyga had found a 2-for-1 deal?

But she seemed delighted with the blingy jewellery, putting it on straightaway and throwing her arms around Tyga as they kissed in front of her family.

It seems that the family might be moving on from their recent troubles, which included Kanye being hospitalised for a suspected breakdown and Kourtney and Scott breaking up – this time ‘for good’.

Under-dressed cousin should be least of your wedding worries

Question: I’m getting married in a few weeks, and we have a formal cocktail dresses code. I talked to my cousin today and asked what she was wearing. She said she was wearing a shirt and pants. Everyone will be in suits or tuxes, so I asked if she had a blazer or suit jacket, or if I could buy her one for the event. She responded that wearing a blazer would make her incredibly uncomfortable and stressed, and she could not do it; and that wearing a dress shirt and pants was already making her uncomfortable.

I’m incredibly confused by this. It’s just a blazer. I’m not asking her to wear a dress, just to follow the dress code and offering to pay for it.

2014 Long Red Tailor Made Evening Prom Dress (LFNAI0018)Am I allowed to ask her mother to try and convince her? Or do I need to accept that this is just my cousin’s odd comfort level and she cannot follow the dress code AND enjoy the wedding?

I would feel uncomfortable and stressed going to an event I was underdressed for, and I’m not sure she truly is understanding the dress code. — Cousin

Answer: Drop it. You tried, she resisted, one person will not ruin anything, and as a host, your priority has to be the comfort of your guests vs. conformity to your theme. If you can have a blazer handy to provide if she asks (i.e., not to offer), it would be kind.

Question: A “good” friend moved down the street from us with her family last fall. I put “good” in quotation marks because, although we’ve been friends since elementary school, she can be snarky, judgmental and passive-aggressive. It’s just tiring to deal with, and I’d rather spend time with people who just do not do that, rather than trying to “fix” this relationship.

However, she lives down the darn block. Our husbands are friendly. Our daughters play together. We have this 20-plus-year history. How do you suggest I save my sanity by limiting our interactions without making things too uncomfortable, or ruining things for the other family members who do get along? — Neighbor Frenemy

Answer: Why don’t you just keep interacting with her as your history, proximity and families demand, and simply not take her crap? Kindly and plainly.

When she’s passive-aggressive, ask her to say what she means. When she says something snarky or judgmental, say there’s no call for that — or just, “Really?”

Not to “fix” anything, but to get across in a friendship-friendly way these habits of hers annoy you and you’re not having them anymore.

She might surprise you by catching herself.

Old habits with old friends go both ways, and she might be reverting to an outdated version of herself she’s more than happy to leave behind, once you make her aware of it.

If instead she responds by calling you too sensitive, keep on the calm path. “Maybe so. I just find life easier when people are kind and direct.”

The One App You Need For Finding The Perfect Bridesmaid Dress

After the general hoopla and giddiness of the recent announcement of my brother-in-law’s engagement (congratulations Henry and Tina), my other sister-in-law, being rather concerned that she is going to be asked to be a bridesmaid, called me in a panic.

It turns out, she’s offered up my services, as Fashion Director and general taste-maker, to help with the task of finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses. My challenge is to make five grown women look good in the same shade and/or style of formal dresses, hopefully in something they *might* consider wearing again. No pressure, then…

Buying your own wedding dress can be stressful enough, so imagine how overwhelming it can feel to find the perfect dress for your entire bridal party. From dealing with various personalities, shapes, sizes and different taste preferences, brides often find the process more difficult than they anticipated.

You want your friends and family to feel happy, comfortable, attractive and as excited about your wedding day as you are, not dreading it because you are making them wear a peach tulle dress inspired by Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind.

Who could forget that scene in 27 Dresses where Katherine Heigl flings open the doors of her overflowing wardrobe to reveal an assortment of bridesmaids dresses made up of sparkly mesh crinolines and badly-fitting satin corsets, each one being more comical and poofier than the last.

Or how about when Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City dressed her bridesmaids in totally different bold colours – incase you don’t remember, black, red and purple, Maybe that’s what sent Mr Big running in the other direction?

Now here’s the dilemma. Do you go for colour or shape? Answer: colour.

I suggest choosing one colour but in different styles, but you’ve got to think seriously about the colour. Blush and taupe maybe the ‘in’ bridesmaid dress colours right now, but they don’t suit every skin tone – they can easily wash some people out.

Top tip: If you’ve got a range of fair, olive and dark skin tones, go for a two-colour palette to please everyone. How about pink and a darker coral?

Bridesmaid dress inspo 1: Jerry Hall’s daughters, Georgia May and Elizabeth Jagger, stole the show at her wedding to Rupert Murdoch when dressed in different shades of blue to compliment the bride’s formal dresses uk.

Troian Bellisario had a ~secret~ wedding dress and it’s even more amazing than the first

Troian Bellisario and her husband Patrick Adams have been married for just over a week now, and we’re still swooning hard over the details of their *perfect* wedding. We’re also still learning things about the wedding that make us love this amazing duo even more — like the fact that Troian actually had a ~secret~ second wedding cocktail dresses, and honestly, it is far superior to her first wedding dress.

Troian Bellisario had a ~secret~ wedding dress and it’s even more amazing than the firstWe love all wedding dresses equally. But this one is SO SPARKLY.

According to the pictures Troian shared to Instagram, this was actually the dress for her post-wedding festivities (obviously, because every wedding needs an after party, and sometimes an after-after party).

If you’re wondering where you can sang this super-sparkly dress yourself, it’s from Maureen Patricia, who designs all sorts of beautiful wedding (and bridesmaid) dresses. However, the one Troian is wearing is a custom dress made just for Troian. BUT, if you ask really nicely for the super-sparkly wedding dress Troian wore, maybe something can be worked out.

Or we can just spend the rest of our lives basking in how *perfect* this one dress is, and it’ll be impossible to ever recreate this sparkly beauty once again.

Troian’s Instagram comment wonders where she can wear the dress next, and honestly, we say EVERYWHERE.

The politics of the fashion industry

Think back on the year in fashion and it probably looks something like this: Beyoncé in Formation or the latex look she served at the Met Gala, everything Kim Kardashian, Rihanna in a Saint Laurent red heart-shaped fox fur coat or Demna Gvasalia’s debut as creative director of Balenciaga.

Consumers are less likely to ponder how the political and economic instability caused by events like Donald Trump’s election victory or the shocking Brexit vote impacted spending patterns, or how a bombing in the Instanbul garment district affected fashion’s supply chain.

pics:celebrity dresses

We’re taught to think fashion and politics look like Michelle Obama and her gold Versace gown at the Obama’s final state dinner, Sophie Trudeau wearing Canadian designer Lucian Matis at the White House, Hillary Clinton in an Armani jacket reportedly worth $16,000 giving a speech on income equality or British prime minister Theresa May taking fire for wearing leather trousers worth a reported $1,650.

We giddily accept clickbait photo galleries-cum-news stories that reinforce a perception that fashion is only ornamental, when in truth it is a $2.4-trillion industry with its own world summits, coalitions, trade agreements and media outlets.

An estimated 57.8 million people are employed in the manufacture of apparel and textiles alone, to say nothing of the people working in the footwear sector or the countless millions employed in the creative, design, shipping, retail and business sectors of what is the second dirtiest industry in the world (only after oil).

The conversation around clothing has to change. We have to start looking at fashion as a powerful economic engine with a vested interest in politics and government.

And, there’s not a lot of time to waste. Because, as of right now, things aren’t going so well.

According to the first State of Fashion report, co-published by Business of Fashion and McKinsey & Company, the world’s economy “has not been this volatile since the depths of the financial crisis of 2009.”

For the past decade, the industry has seen 5.5 per cent annual growth, according to the McKinsey Global Fashion Index, outpacing overall GDP expansion. But by the end of this year, growth is expected to have slowed to between two and 2.5 per cent. Sixty-seven per cent of the industry experts and executives surveyed for State of Fashion said conditions in the industry have worsened in the past year, and only 40 per cent think they’ll get better in 2017.

The top challenge? Dealing with “uncertainty and shifts in the global economy,” the report says. Purchases are emotional decisions and consumers do not spend in politically unstable times. Case in point: data from Slice Intelligence, which monitors electronic receipts of more than four million shoppers, reveals that states where Trump won the popular vote had the highest year-over-year gains in November for revenue from online apparel.

It all points to one cold hard fact: politics will play a big role in what a much-needed recovery for the fashion business looks like, when it happens and what retail looks like on other side.

The sooner we hold our political leaders accountable for how their decisions affect the sector, the better things will be for everyone who depends on it for either a living or, literally, the clothes on their backs.
