Thermoset resin-based carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are high-performance composites that use carbon fiber as the primary reinforcement and thermoset resins such as epoxy, phenolic, or unsaturated polyester as the matrix. They are manufactured by lay-up and impregnation (or prepregging), followed by mold forming and curing under heat and pressure to achieve crosslinking. The carbon fiber provides very high strength and stiffness, while the resin enables shaping and load transfer, so that the material combines low density, high strength, high modulus, as well as excellent corrosion and fatigue resistance. It is widely used in aerospace, automotive, wind power, and high-end sporting goods. In this report, two categories are covered: (1) carbon fiber prepreg as a material/intermediate product; and (2) composite products cured from the above thermoset systems—such as plates, tubes, profiles, stiffeners, carbon beams, structural parts, and other complex components—at the component end.

Driven by global demands for energy conservation and emission reduction, lightweight structures and high reliability, overall demand for thermoset CFRP is on a rigid upward trajectory, with an average annual growth rate in the mid- to high-single-digit range; the aerospace and wind power segments are growing significantly faster than the industry average. From a regional perspective, North America and Europe remain at the forefront of technology and applications thanks to their mature aerospace and wind power industrial chains, while Asia-Pacific—especially China—has become the key region for demand growth and capacity deployment, underpinned by the rapid expansion of wind power, new energy vehicles and domestic carbon fiber capacity. In terms of product and application structure, the industry is mainly measured under two statistical calibers. One is carbon fiber prepreg, which uses thermoset resins such as epoxy, phenolic and unsaturated polyester as the matrix and serves as an intermediate material supplied to downstream molding and processing companies. The other is CFRP products cured from the above systems, including plates, tubes, profiles, stiffeners, carbon beams and various structural parts and complex components. Within thermoset systems, epoxy resins hold an absolutely dominant position, while phenolic and unsaturated polyester resins are more oriented toward heat-resistant or cost-sensitive applications. On the application side, aerospace and defense and wind turbine blades are currently the two most critical end-use sectors, together contributing the majority of industry demand. Automotive lightweighting, hydrogen storage and other high-pressure vessels, rail transit, high-end sporting goods and industrial machinery structural parts constitute medium-scale application segments, while electronics and electrical, medical and other niche fields provide diversified incremental space.

From the manufacturing perspective, the cost structure of thermoset CFRP is dominated by raw materials, with carbon fiber and resin systems together typically accounting for 55%–70% of total cost, forming, processing, energy and equipment depreciation accounting for about 20%–30%, and labor, inspection and quality management accounting for about 10%–15%. A typical thermoset prepreg production line has a single-line capacity of roughly 1,000–3,000 tons per year, mainly depending on width, line speed and product specification. For large wind turbine blades or aerospace structural parts, thermoset molding lines are often measured by the number of blades or the area of structural parts that can be processed per unit time; converted by area, the annual processing capacity can reach several hundred thousand square meters. Overall, thermoset CFRP is a medium- to high-margin industry with high technical and certification barriers. Gross margins for aerospace and high-end industrial structural components generally reach 30%–40% or even higher, while mass applications such as wind power and automotive typically fall in the 20%–30% range.

In terms of industry chain and competitive landscape, the upstream segment mainly includes suppliers of PAN-based or pitch-based carbon fiber, thermoset resins such as epoxy and phenolic, fabrics and fabric preforms, core materials and auxiliary agents. Midstream companies are responsible for prepreg manufacturing, fabric/multiaxial material design, lay-up, tooling design and thermoset curing processes. Downstream customers are primarily OEMs and system integrators, such as aircraft manufacturers, wind turbine and blade producers, automakers and tier-one suppliers. In the international market, several multinational materials giants have established integrated layouts covering “carbon fiber–prepreg–structural components,” thereby dominating high-end applications.
