A young Wellington fashion designer has come a long way from not being able to sew on a button two years ago.

Rebecca Tannant, 24, won the top all round excellence award at New Zealand Fashion Tech’s 2015 graduation showcase last month.

Her collection of black Victorian-inspired bridal gowns was the most expensive product in her class, with a retail value of $3000.

Winning the top award was a shock for Tannant, who said the calibre of her classmates’ work was very high.

“It was a complete shock. I was happy with my collection, but I worked so closely with everyone else in the class and saw all the work they were putting in, too,” she said.

Despite getting hands-on experience with fashion only when she started her diploma two years ago, Tannant has always loved fashion.

“My mum told me I’ve always wanted to do fashion and I would draw little wedding dress online when I was young.

“I’ve always been creative, I don’t want an office job, I want to make stuff.”

Tannant won the award for her final assignment of the diploma, creating a mini collection in six weeks.

During the research phase of her collection, she became smitten with Victorian fashion, particularly the mourning attire.

“I found the clothes really beautiful and extravagant with their big fans and umbrellas. I loved the detail in it, so I went from there.”

Her original plan to do traditional white wedding dresses was squashed when the cost of white lace was prohibitive.

For Tannant, who describes her style as “rocky, but not goth”, working with black fabric was her way of expressing her own style.

She is now figuring out what to do with the cheap bridesmaid dresses, which are taking up space in her wardrobe.

“I don’t want to part with them because they’re my first collection, but I can’t just wear them any old day.’

Tannant is looking for a job in evening or bridal wear in Wellington.

Her goals for her career in the fashion industry are relatively low-key.

“I don’t want to be the next Trelise Cooper. I just want to have my own little shop, where I can make pretty dresses.”

COMMEMORATIVE gateposts commissioned to mark the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton are dividing opinion in Bucklebury, according to national media reports.

Rustic wooden posts resembling railway sleepers topped with carvings of acorns were recently installed in the Duchess of Cambridge’s home village of Chapel Row in Bucklebury parish. The 10ft tall gate posts mark the village’s famous daughter’s marriage to Prince William in 2011.

An inscription on one post, says that it is “to commemorate the wedding of Catherine & William” and gives the date of the wedding in Latin. The other says: “Welcome through one of the historic gates of Bucklebury.”

The village became the centre of a worldwide media frenzy at the time of the royal wedding and the births of the couple’s’ children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Back in the spotlight, the reports suggested that the posts had divided opinion and ignited a “ferocious debate” at a recent village coffee morning.

One villager allegedly branded them an eyesore and called for them to be “ripped down and turned into firewood”. Another complained that they did not fit in with Bucklebury and its history.

The chairwoman of Bucklebury Parish Council, Wynne Frankum, would only say that the posts had generated mixed feelings. Mrs Frankum added that they had been given planning permission and that the parish council had not held a meeting since they were installed.

Lynda Tillotson, the owner of interior design store L Interiors in Chapel Row, said the royal wedding was a wonderful thing to commemorate and that someone would always have an opinion on aspects of village life.

The posts, in South End Road near Hungerford Lane, were commissioned by the owner of the Bucklebury Estate, Willy Hartley Russell.

Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News, Mr Hartley Russell said that the national press reports were unsubstantiated and that the posts were an attractive commemoration for the royal wedding.

“I don’t know anyone who is against these gateposts,” he said. “They’re a fitting and appropriate commemoration of the royal wedding. The parish council wanted to do something to commemorate the event and I took it on to do something which we thought was appropriate.”

Mr Hartley Russell said that Bucklebury and Bradfield parish councils had raised no objections and that no one had commented during the planning process. He said that the posts had been designed by West Ilsley green oak furniture-maker Marnie Moyle using local materials.

“I hope they will be greeted with an appropriate welcome. The parish has done nothing apart from produce some mugs to mark the event.”

He added that it wasn’t every day that a local girl married the heir to the throne.

Three acorns adorn the Middleton coat of arms and were chosen partly because the family used to live in The Avenue, amid one of the oldest oak forests in the country.

A bride learned devastating news just 24 hours before her wedding. The bride, Milly Simmie, says she thought she was the picture of health before a fall from a horse that resulted in a “routine” X-ray. However, following the X-ray, Milly was told that a radiologist wanted her to come back for a CT scan due to some things that were seen on the X-ray reading. Milly was told that there was nothing to worry about and that the CT was just to be on the safe side.

Despite the doctors calm approach to the issue, Milly was told a few days later that she had 40 tumors in her lungs and five in her liver. A biopsy was performed, and the results came back the day before her wedding day. The news was not good. Milly was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE), and was told she likely had two to 10 years to live. Instead of allowing the diagnosis to get her down, Milly went through with her wedding and says that the newlyweds will work through the diagnosis together and that she won’t take her condition lying down.

The Daily Mail reports that a bride, 29-year-old Milly Simmie, was all set to marry her dream man, 30-year-old Alistair, before learning devastating news about her health. The young woman from England fell from her horse, which resulted in a trip to the doctor. At the time of the fall, Milly complained of pain in her collar area, and doctors performed a routine X-ray to determine if something was broken during the fall. However, what they found was shocking.

The young woman who claims she thought she was in perfect health before the fall learned that she was suffering from a rare form of cancer and that the diagnosis was likely terminal. The blushing bride was given two to 10 years to live just 24 hours before her wedding, and her life was forever changed. However, instead of allowing the diagnosis to get her down, Milly says she was determined to just “enjoy the wedding” and not think about the diagnosis until after her dream wedding.

“I just wanted to enjoy the wedding and then learn more about the EHE.”

With just 24 hours to her wedding vows, Milly informed her guests and six bridesmaids of her diagnosis but told them that the wedding was still going to take place. Milly says that her friends and family were very supportive and that the wedding went just as planned aside from the new bride forgoing the wedding reception dances due to fatigue.

“Alastair was understandably upset but we both just wanted to enjoy the day. My bridesmaids were amazing, they worked so hard to make sure everything came together. The guests just wanted to have a really good day, as I wanted them to.”

As for Milly’s new husband, Alistair, the newlywed says that her new husband is supportive but obviously upset. However, Milly says she will fight this disease to the best of her ability and that she doesn’t plan to fight the cancer laying down.

“I have vowed not to take my condition lying down. I’ve always been very positive and delimited — now more than ever.”

As part of her bid to get better, Milly will be the first patient from the UK to undergo a revolutionary treatment in the United States. The treatment is less invasive than treatments available in the United Kingdom. Milly’s treatment is scheduled for early next year, and Milly says in the meantime, she is swapping “biscuits for broccoli” and is eating as healthy as possible in a bid to heal herself from the potentially terminal disease.

Is the value of your bridal party greater than the sum of its parts?

We know, we know – for a wedding, most brides want to make sure that everyone nearest and dearest to them are included.

One of the old mainstay conventions is to have the number of bridesmaids in accordance to how large your wedding is; one bridesmaid per 50 guests is one practical ratio. Another rule of thumb is to match the number of groomsmen that the groom will be having, but as always, these rules are flexible.

The US model sees more than three bridesmaids as the norm. In Birmingham, Alabama, there’s a 26 percent chance that there will be seven bridesmaids, and in Charleston, South Carolina, there’s an average of five bridesmaids. While such figures haven’t been crunched in Australia (yet), from anecdotal evidence numbers do fluctuate. We all have been to a wedding where there have been four, five or more bridesmaids (or for some of us, been part of the bridal party) but just gauging responses within the Vogue offices about how many bridesmaids are too many, it seems clear that the general consensus that there is a fine line between an appropriate number and what is considered just too much. As well as the practical arrangements of having to co-ordinate the schedules of multiple people, there are also more simple issues such as there being too many attendants to fit during the ceremony or in photos.

While you might want to include more than the standard, remember, the more bridesmaids there are, the more complications arise (if so, then readthis). Have a look at who you’ve chosen to see if they will actually get on with each other. There may be one person who doesn’t sit well in the mix, or may be better value as a guest – completely fine, and chances are she would appreciate not being asked either so you’re in the clear. Or, other close friends can work just as well in other aspects of the wedding, such as the master of ceremonies. And factor in their lifestyles as well; the friend who lives overseas or who has just given birth is probably not the most practical of choices for a bridesmaid.

With selection, now is the time to tread carefully. You can take the route of choosing someone to represent each part of your life – a member of your family like a sister or a cousin, someone from your childhood, and etc. Most reasonable people are understanding of the conundrum of this selection process. If they’re not, find new friends. (We’re kidding! Not really.) Don’t pick someone because you’re guilted into it. Easier said than done we know, but stay strong! If it’s a family situation where someone is insisting to include a sister/cousin/future sister-in-law, it may be better to include them so as not to make a bigger statement of rejection than initially intended. The final rule to keep in mind? Ask yourself if the addition or absence of this person in your wedding party will add to your day or take away from it.

But while evidently the issue of Rita’s choice of outfits is one that needs some serious consideration, more pressing – in my humble – is what the hell gives with Reggie N Bollie?

Or rather, not with them per se, but rather with how everyone seems to have a different idea of how to pronounce ‘Bollie’.

Presenter Caroline Flack is sticking with ‘Bowley’ while her co-host Olly Murs dithers between ‘Bowley’ and ‘Bollie’.

So which is it, phonetically speaking? Reggie N Bollie or Reggie N Bowley?

I don’t really know why, but the fact that there seems to be some discrepancy as to how ‘Bollie’ is pronounced is really grinding my gears. Yes, I know it’s petty and yes, I know it doesn’t matter even jot one, but still, I find myself getting irritated whenever Caroline or Olly or anyone else says ‘Bowley’.

Is it annoying anyone else? Or should I perhaps seek help?

Anyway, moving on, and tonight is yet another double elimination and yet again, I have absolutely no clue who could be at risk…

I was totally shocked when Kiera and Seann left last weekend, and so I’m really at a loss to know who might go tonight. That said, if really pushed, I would suggest that Mason may be in danger, but that’s it. No idea who else could leave the contest.

Who do you think will go?

Bridey, one of the most difficult parts of planning your wedding is choosing the right venue. I mean, there are so many factors to consider, and people to please that what used to be a fun experience has turned into more of a daunting task. Sorry, but true story! So, rather than let it get the best of you (and quickly), get your shit together before you start your journey so that you don’t end up wasting a ton of your time, and that of those trying to help you. How? Well, let me help you get started before you lose your mind!

First of all, bridey, do your homework. I know that it’s super exciting to start the process of searching for the right venue, but before you can even begin researching potential venue sites, you and your sig other need to sit down and determine a few important factors. Do your homework! Because, now is not the time to be impulsive. Outside of the down payment for your house, this is going to be the next biggest expense of your life. So, don’t fuck it up by being impulsive and reckless. Determine your budget (give or take). Determine an approximate number of guests so that you know which venues will work, and which ones won’t. Determine reasonable accommodations and concessions for your guests… etc. etc. etc.

1. Budget: I know that this is difficult, but bridey, it’s the most important factor when choosing your venue. At the very least, try to figure out what you have to spend overall (wedding venue, plus size bridesmaid dresses, flowers, transportation, etc.), and what you have to spend on your venue (where you’ll spend approximately 50-60 percent of your total budget). Have a “worst case scenario,” and a “best case scenario” mapped out, and be honest. Better to overshoot than undershoot when it comes to your budget.

2. Number of Guests: While there is no way to know the exact number of guests this early in the game, at the very least try to figure out an approximate number. Why? Well, if you begin visiting sites without knowing how many people you’re going to have at your wedding, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment. You’ll fall in love with a place that will either be too cavernous or too small, and ultimately, you will need to start your search over. Why put yourself through that, bridey? So, chat with your sig other, poll your parents, and set some boundaries (based on budget)… Then go look!

3. Aesthetic + Reality: Really pretty basic, no? Are you an ocean side bride or a hotel bride? Are you a rustic bride or modern bride? What do you see when you daydream? Narrow it down. Start where you think you will end. Got something brewing? Great! Well, now compare what you know about your aesthetic against your budget (aka, reality). For example, I know I like modern furniture, but I also know that it tends to cost a shitload more than “normal” furniture. Ohhhhh… yeah…

Okay, it’s your turn, bridey. Want an outdoor wedding at a your parent’s house? Sounds lovely! But, stop and think for a sec… Think about renting every.single.item. from forks to bathrooms to power generators (for the DJ, caterer, lighting, etc.)… Yup! Your guests will need to pee, and 3-4 bathrooms for 150 guests just won’t cut it. The DJ will most certainly need power to rock the night away, right? See where I’m going, bridey? Perhaps you will need to curb your aesthetic to match your budget…

4. A DIY Bride or Not a DIY Bride? That is the Question!: I am not a DIY girl. I would much rather hire people who know what they’re doing than waste my time trying. Sad, but true. How this pertains to you, bridey? Well, if you decide on a venue that lacks the aesthetic you were going for, then get ready to roll up your sleeves. And, I’m not just talking about making cute centerpieces. I am talking about schelping in tables, chairs, linen, etc. etc. etc., and obviously you’re not going to do it on your wedding day, so therefore you need to determine who is, and then pay them to do so. This scenario has the potential to be BRUTAL and costly. Not your thing? Well, then perhaps a full service venue is looking like the better choice, no?

5. Concessions & Accommodations: I know your wedding day is about you and your sig other, but please consider your guests. It doesn’t have to be ALL about your guests, but do consider their needs and then do your best to accommodate them. For instance, if you’re having an outdoor ceremony on a hot summer day, then provide cold drinks and fans. Bringing your guests to the middle of nowhere USA for the weekend? That’s cool, just know that you’ll have to accommodate their needs for the entire weekend, not just the day of your wedding. We’re talking the rehearsal dinner, wedding day and brunch the next morning. And, these concessions and accommodations? Well, they will definitely dig into your budget, so plan accordingly.

Bridey, as you start your wedding planning journey, take these suggestions and run with them. Remember, for most of you, finding your sig other took time and several “mistakes” before you found “the one.” Finding your venue is no different, except this time, you’re going into it with your eyes wide open. Got it?! Good!

“It was a very gloomy day, not a lot of light to work with, but it actually matched the theme of the wedding and turned out great,” said Holly Aldridge, owner of About to Snap Photography, who shot pictures of the event.

A match made

The relationship between Eastman, a nurse at Saint Francis Hospital, and Pauley, a retired contractor, began — as you might expect — in a somewhat unconventional setup.

“We met through his cousin and my maid of honor at Hooter’s in Kanawha City,” Eastman said.

They’ve been together ever since.

Pauley proposed at their home just more than a year later, on Aug. 14, 2014, a couple of weeks before their respective birthdays.

“He asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday,” Eastman said.

She was indifferent, but Pauley had his own idea.

“He said, ‘Well, I know what I want to do; I’m going to ask you to be my wife,’” Eastman said.

This is Eastman’s first marriage and Pauley’s second. Pauley has two kids, Seth and Sarah.

Making plans

Eastman and Pauley have been carefully preparing their fall ceremony for the last year.

“We figured out what date and other big things we wanted first,” Eastman said.

“Then, we just took our time, buying things when we had the money.”

Having the wedding on Halloween was Eastman’s idea, but Pauley has gone along with it from the start.

“He said, ‘Whatever you want to do is fine with me,’” Eastman said.

“We’ve done it all ourselves. It’s actually been a lot of fun doing this together.”

The couple gathered a lot of the seasonal decorations, like glitter pumpkins, plastic skeletons and creepy fabrics from holiday sales.

“We got a lot during this year and last Halloween,” Eastman said.

A ‘Nightmare’ of a theme

Once they had a date and began gathering smaller items, Eastman started thinking of ways to incorporate pieces of her favorite film, “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” including the main characters, Jack Skellington and Sally, into her big day.

“I even have a tattoo of them on my right forearm,” she said.

Naturally, that kind of devotion meant putting her own twist on the typical wedding details. Members of the bridal party, for example, were decked out in Jack Skellington tights with the customary pinstripes and round skeleton head, topped off with trademark black and white tennis shoes. As for the bride, Eastman donned Sally tights complete with the stitchmarks and custom “Nightmare Before Christmas” Converse shoes.

Eastman even found full-sized figures of Jack, Sally and Zero, created by Tiffany Steele of Tiffany’s Custom Creations, as well as a custom cake topper of the skeletal couple and, yes, the movie soundtrack to play at various points throughout the ceremony and reception.

The bride did wear white — with scrolling red tattoo designs, which matched her own.

“I do have a lot of tattoos,” Eastman said.

And when they said “’til death do us part,” they meant it, symbolizing their love with rings that were carried in a coffin-shaped box.

“Their vows were Halloween-themed,” Aldridge said. “I caught myself listening instead of actually taking the pictures because I was so into hearing what was coming next.”

The reception was planned as an old-fashioned pig roast on Lodge grounds.

“We raised the pig ourselves,” Eastman said.

Music, played by the aptly named DJ Undertaker (who arrived in a hearse), ranged from John Fogerty’s “Joy of My Life” for the couple’s first dance to country classic “Mama Tried” (for the mother-son dance) and “Just Fishin’,” by Trace Adkins (for the father-daughter dance).

Guests were given useful black stadium cups that say “To love, laughter and happily ever after” with the bride and groom’s names and the date to commemorate the occasion.

“It was the most creative wedding I’ve ever done. It seemed like everyone there loved Halloween,” Aldridge said.

The Pauleys are expected to return from their honeymoon in Walt Disney World this weekend, and plan to reside in Griffithsville.

“We’re both big kids,” Eastman said, when asked about their plans.

Brides can now get hitched in a barn once owned by serial bridegroom King Henry VIII following a £1 million renovation.

The Great Barn at Headstone Manor, Harrow re-opened this month as an events and wedding venue after an eight month programme of extensive restoration and refurbishment costing nearly £1 million.

The Grade II* listed building was constructed in 1506 when the whole Manor was owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury.

After King Henry VIII acquired it during the Reformation, it passed into the hands of Lord North before it became part of a privately owned working farm.

In the 1930’s the local authority took it over and ownership transferred to the London Borough of Harrow in 1965.

After 500 years, the future of the Great Barn and the other three historic buildings at Headstone Manor looked bleak as urgent repair works were needed to stop them falling into ruin.

But now the building has been restored to its original former glory as part of a three year programme of regeneration for the museum, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Harrow Council.

Jo Saunders, heritage and museum manager, said: “We really look forward to opening The Great Barn’s massive doors to the public and make this unique building available for community events and weddings.

“This is just the start of a thrilling three year programme of regeneration for the museum, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Harrow Council which will see all of the buildings brought into self-supporting use.”

The whole roof has been repaired, external doors replaced along with sections of the external boarding, and heating, a new kitchen, cloakrooms and lighting have been installed.

The timber-framed barn’s vaulted structure remains largely as it was built, standing at nearly 48 metres long, 8 metres wide and over 9 metres high.

Now licenced for civil ceremonies, the first wedding at the Great Barn takes place on November 7.

At a glittering reception for supporters of the Great Barn at Headstone Manor, Cllr Sue Anderson said:

“This site is steeped in history and the character of the building is a significant part of Harrow.
