Wedding dress court case results in a ‘fitting’ decision

A bride who said “no” to her wedding dress got a “yes” in Nova Scotia Small Claims Court this week.

In a decision posted Wednesday, adjudicator Gregg Knudsen favoured Ginger Kim Roy’s claim against seamstress Ruth Ryan, doing business as In Stitches with Ruth.

The dress was to be a mash-up of two different gowns, as Roy was unable to find one exactly to her liking.

“However, she found two dresses, each with a part she liked, i.e. one with the skirt and train, the other with a bodice that she preferred over other styles,” Knudsen noted. She asked the seamstress to combine the two, along with making the bridesmaids’ dresses and pocket squares for the groom, best man and ushers.

“In reviewing the evidence, I have no doubt that Ms. Ryan worked hard and tried her best to complete the best wedding dresses and sew it as stipulated by Ms. Roy. The job was more complicated than anticipated and took longer than either party had planned,” Knudsen said.

Pauline Mullin was the seamstress who ended up sewing the bridal gown Roy wore down the aisle after rejecting the original creation. After multiple delays and fittings, and 10 days before the wedding, she saw the dress and testified there appeared to be “one dart too many,” a lack of seam allowances, and that the dress wasn’t the same on both sides, appearing to pull to one side.

Knudsen acknowledged the subjective nature of what constitutes a “skilful and workmanlike manner” for different wedding gowns, but said there were some basics that should have been followed.

“For example, it must fit properly and look how a dress should appear in terms of symmetry and design . . . If the Claimant had not provided photographs in evidence, I would have disallowed the claim. The photographs are clear. The dress was tight, but it was too tight and did not fit correctly as it could not be closed in the back. More significantly, as Ms. Roy described it, the top is ‘lopsided,’” he wrote.

While Roy paid for the cheap wedding dresses and gave Ryan a $100 tip, she wasn’t legally stuck, Knudsen said.

“Although acceptance and payment are relevant considerations in assessing credibility, the Consumer Protection Act applies regardless of whether the garment was delivered and paid for,” he noted.

Knudsen awarded $300 — the amount Ryan originally contracted to do the sewing for — in special damages, $100 in general damages, and costs of $191.26. Roy had sought a total of $1,331.26

“By all accounts, the Roy’s wedding was a happy occasion. That said, Ms. Roy has experienced disappointment, upset and stress as a result of the breach of contract,” he wrote.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s Oscar de la Renta Wedding Dress Is Totally Stunning

Former Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler tied the knot to her pro-baseball player fiancé Cutter DykstraSaturday in a low-key ceremony that’s totally different than what we’d expect from a mobster’s daughter. After the actress revealed her continuing struggle with multiple sclerosis, according to People, she relates walking down the aisle to “walking into a new life” — and in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown, she sure looked great doing it!

The actress said “I do” in a gorgeous white strapless Oscar de la Renta gown that was equal parts gorgeous and classic. “I went shopping at a place in Long Island with my mom called The Wedding Salon. I walked in and the lady was like, ‘What are you looking for?’” she told People. “And I was like, ‘I don’t want sweetheart, I don’t want ball gown’ and that’s exactly what I’m wearing. I feel like a princess in it.”

Unlike most celebs that call up their favorite designer for a one-of-a-kind creation, Sigler opted to share herwedding dress shopping experience with one person — her mom. “It’s everything. … I didn’t go through designers or anything, I wanted it more for my mom, I wanted her to have that fun experience with me. It’s just simple and strapless.”

The simple dress, which the actress accented with jewelry by Forevermark Diamonds, was perfect for the duo’s 150-guest Palm Springs nuptials. The ceremony was officiated by Sigler’s BFF Lance Bass, who in a way was returning the favor. Sigler officiated Bass’ nuptials a little over a year ago in December 2014. The wedding also became a total family affair when the couple’s 2-year-old son Beau walked down the aisle holding a sign that said, “Here comes my mommy.” Is that not the most adorable thing ever?!

The bride and groom topped off their big day with a romantic candlelit reception that had blankets and pillows strewn about, and the two even made sure to have a romantic fire pit for making s’mores. “We just wanted everyone to be relaxed and have a great time,” Sigler said of her self-planned nuptials. “It’s laid-back, not fancy. That’s who we are as a couple so we wanted the wedding to represent us.” Even though we haven’t seen pictures of the reception yet, we have a feeling Sigler may want to look into turning wedding planninginto a full time gig.

The couple’s intimate nuptials boasted a few a-list guests including Sigler’s close friends Lea Michele and JoAnna Garcia Swisher. “Getting to see this amazing couple share such a beautiful moment among all of our friends and their families was so amazing,” Michele shared. “I couldn’t be happier for my friend Jamie on this wonderful day.”

So, Rita Ora’s wedding dress caused a hoo-hah, but can we talk Reggie N Bollie?

For last night’s live edition of The X Factor, Rita Ora once again played with the boundaries that exist between looking chic and looking a d*** by donning what appeared to be some kind of bridesmaid dresses online

And it was the topic of much talk on Twitter last night, with one viewer asking, “What’s Rita Ora got on?

“It looks like she couldn’t decide which wedding dress to buy so she cut 2 in half and sewed them together…”

Another remarked, “@RitaOra your dress looks like an 8 year olds drawing of their ideal wedding dress!”

But while evidently the issue of Rita’s choice of outfits is one that needs some serious consideration, more pressing – in my humble – is what the hell gives with Reggie N Bollie?

Or rather, not with them per se, but rather with how everyone seems to have a different idea of how to pronounce ‘Bollie’.

Presenter Caroline Flack is sticking with ‘Bowley’ while her co-host Olly Murs dithers between ‘Bowley’ and ‘Bollie’.

So which is it, phonetically speaking? Reggie N Bollie or Reggie N Bowley?

I don’t really know why, but the fact that there seems to be some discrepancy as to how ‘Bollie’ is pronounced is really grinding my gears. Yes, I know it’s petty and yes, I know it doesn’t matter even jot one, but still, I find myself getting irritated whenever Caroline or Olly or anyone else says ‘Bowley’.

Is it annoying anyone else? Or should I perhaps seek help?

Anyway, moving on, and tonight is yet another double elimination and yet again, I have absolutely no clue who could be at risk…

I was totally shocked when Kiera and Seann left last weekend, and so I’m really at a loss to know who might go tonight. That said, if really pushed, I would suggest that Mason may be in danger, but that’s it. No idea who else could leave the contest.

Who do you think will go?
