Michelle Keegan puts glamour first on the sub-zero NTAs red carpet

Michelle Keegan puts glamour first on the sub-zero NTAs red carpet before joining British TV babes Holly Willoughby, Amanda Holden and Vicky Pattison for the afterparty

The temperatures may have been dipping in London, but the cream of television’s beauties didn’t let it hinder their red carpet appearances on Wednesday night, nor did it dampen their spirits at the afterparty.

Turning out for the annual, ultra-glamorous National Television Awards at The O2, blonde bombshells Holly Willoughby and Amanda Holden kept things classic in black and white floor-skimming frocks, while bold brunettes Vicky Pattison and Michelle Keegan went all out Hollywood glamour.

Television’s small screen beauties were certainly taking the red carpet by storm, competing just as much in the style stakes as some of them were for NTA gongs; though when the wins were all said and done, it was time for the stars to rub shoulders at the afterparty.

Sheer glamour: Amanda flashed her middle in sheer

A touch on the Bollywood side, NTA-nominated Michelle dressed in an unorthodox belly-baring dress as she no doubt held high hopes that her nod would come to fruition.

The former Coronation Street star arrived with her husband Mark Wright, cutely co-ordinating in navy, but left him on the sidelines while she enjoyed a few solo snaps before heading into the star-studded venue.

Doing a 360 for the cameras, the NTA hopeful – who was nominated in the Best Drama category for Ordinary Lies – revealed a bralet at the back as her caped-style dress slashed just as much from behind as it did in the front.

While breakfast TV presenter Holly’s frock did more to cover up her shape, it did nothing to hide her curves and the blonde bombshell affectionately named ‘Holly Willoughbooby’ showed off her hourglass shape in bright white.

Beauty pageant beckons for former rugby player

Growing up in Fordlands, Candace Wilson was all about being outside and playing rugby.

So, fast forward a few years and, Miss Wilson is the first to admit she is more than a little surprised that she is about to represent New Zealand in her first beauty pageant.

The former Rotorua woman, who is now based in Brisbane, will take on women from around the world after being selected to represent her home country at this year’s Face of the Globe pageant, held in Paris and London in April.

Candace Wilson is representing New Zealand in an international beauty pageant.

While a big fashion fan – she works for Tommy Hilfiger – Miss Wilson said she had never contemplated entering a beauty pageant until she was asked to enter this one.

“I’m 5ft 1 (1.55m) from Rotorua. We don’t really celebrate beauty like that.”

To be in the final group of 100-odd competing after more than 6500 entries was amazing, she said.

“I don’t really do pageants, I’ve never done one before so it’s all new to me.”

She said growing up she never imagined she would be where she was now.

“I was a butchy girl, I played rugby.”

Miss Wilson said she planned to incorporate her Maori heritage into the competition, especially in the talent section – but would not be doing a haka like Miss World New Zealand recently did, causing some outcry.

“I grew up bilingual. It was my everyday life. I’ve had people email me saying they don’t want to see me on TV doing the haka and I’ve told them I’ve got this. I know what to do.”

Creed star Tessa Thompson puts on a leggy display in thigh-high split gown

She’s a knockout! Creed star Tessa Thompson puts on a leggy display in thigh-high split gown as she joins Sylvester Stallone at London premiere

They’ve just celebrated a Golden Globe win for their movie at Sunday’s glittering ceremony in LA.

But there’s been no let-up on the promo trail for the Creed cast as Sylvester Stallone led the arrivals at the London premiere of the anticipated film on Tuesday night.

The movie legend walked the red carpet with leading lady Tessa Thompson, who wowed in a shimmering purple dress with a daring thigh-high split.

Tessa, 32, bought some glamour to Leicester Square with her gorgeous gown.

The metallic number in a purple-pink hue featured a bold check print, but it was the sky-high split that really commanded attention.

The actress, who also had a role in last year’s Oscar nominated Selma, showed off her long legs in the daring dress, while she added a pair of silver heels to the winning look.

Tessa swept her long locks to the side and finished her red carpet look off with a flawless face of makeup and hoop earrings.

All the family: Duncan Bannatyne hit the premiere with his girlfriend Nigora Whitehorn and his daughters

Sylvester followed Tessa down the red carpet, with the Hollywood legend looking suave in a pin-stripe suit and navy tie as he waved to the crowds.

In the movie, Stallone reprises his role as Rocky Balboa who agrees to train Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the boxing son of his former rival and late friend Apollo Creed. Tessa plays Bianca, a singer and songwriter who enjoys a romance with Johnson.

On Sunday Stallone was named Best Supporting Actor for Creed at the Golden Globes, building the buzz around an expected Oscar nomination, when the nods are announced later this week.

In an emotional speech, the visibly shocked actor gushed: ‘I wanna thank Rocky, the best friend I ever had!’

However Stallone raised eyebrows by initially forgetting to mention black director Ryan Coogler or star Jordan – a situation he stopped the music to rectify.

‘You did it all, I just hung on for dear life,’ he told Coogler – but his words were not aired as the show had gone to commercial break.

‘I am the sum total of everyone I’ve ever met,’ the 69-year-old had gushed.

He then enthusiastically thanked a long list of those who helped him in his career, including his representatives and various producers.

But he saved his most touching words for his wife, Jennifer Flavin.

‘Having your love is the greatest award in the world every day,’ he told the 47-year-old.

However the apparent omission of Cooger and Jordan didn’t go unnoticed by fans, who tweeted their outrage.

Selma director Ava DuVernay responded by writing: ‘Well. I’m gonna go ahead and thank RYAN COOGLER + MICHAEL B. JORDAN since no one else is. Thank you, brothers. Good work. #smh #goldenglobes.’

And Samuel L Jackson agreed, writing: ‘#waitwaitwait, Ryan Coogler & Michael B Jordan, Thanks for acting with me!!! Loved Sly but…’

Tea and crumpets served — Downton Abbey style

Tea and crumpets served — Downton Abbey style

A slice of Georgian history visited the Burlington Public Library on Saturday afternoon. Librarians dressed in the opulent “Directoire-style” of 1912 and in formal maid costume, serving in a beautiful tea service small cucumber sandwiches along with Lady Grey tea and cinnamon and cheddar scones. Patrons sat at two large round tables that featured the handwritten cursive placards of guests’ names.

It was all part of the free “Downton Abbey” Tea Party at 34 Library Lane at 1 p.m. prior to a screening of the PBS TV show’s fifth season’s finale in the library’s video screening room.

Assistant Library Director Diana Rudzinski dressed in period costume in the style of an upper-class British matriarch, complete with a green gown, a long strand of pearls, and purple gloves. Rudzinski said, “This is the first time we’ve ever done this. We, at the library, are all fans, and it’s been a fabulous turnout among all ages.”

New beginnings: 'Before The Biggest Loser, I had a lot of insecurities and it took a lot of time to get to the place where I am now' she said

Some of the 13 attendees included teens and adults, who said they would later attend the “Downton Abbey” final sixth-season’s premiere-episode screening at Torrington’s Warner Theatre Saturday evening. The British drama series, which follows the lives of the 1910s aristocratic Crawley family and its servants, is also broadcast Sunday evening on PBS at 9 p.m.

Teen librarian Sara Lo Presti represented the “downstairs” life at an English manor, dressed in a formal black-and-white maid’s outfit. She said, “I am tickled by how many people are here and how many ‘Downton Abbey’ fans there are out there.”

Lo Presti added, “At first, we were thinking it may be just an adult event. But then we opened it up to teens as well. And they came.”

Megan Porga, 16; Meghan Conlin, 16; and Emily Porga, 14, who attend Burlington’s Lewis S. Mills High School, represented the younger fans of the show who dined under the watchful eyes of a photo at their table of the “Downton Abbey’s” sharp-tongued Dowager Countess of Grantham (played by Dame Maggie Smith).

“I like the show but I like that they are ending it at this time,” Porga said. “It’s a good series.”

Meghan’s mother, Lisa Conlin, sat nearby, adding, “My daughter and I started watching a few seasons ago. Now, we watch the show regularly.”

Lo Presti, Rudzinski, and other library staff had prepared for the party tuna-salad, egg-salad, and cucumber tea sandwiches and cheddar savories in the shape of hearts. Varieties of Earl Grey and English breakfast tea were served as well, topped off with chocolate-covered cherries.

This Shoppable Vault of Vintage Sunglasses Dates Back to 1969

Few accessories are as obviously indicative of the era they were first designed in quite like sunglasses. Think about it: dramatic cat eye swoops can easily be attributed to the ’50s, wire rimmed frames with tinted lenses can be pegged to the ’70s and the ’80s is synonymous with shield frames.

This is part of the reason why we were ecstatic to find that the optic brand Cutler and Gross boasts a Vintage Vault in each of their eight namesake shops, including their New York outpost. A visit to these collections feels similar to receiving a history lesson in eyewear from 1969 (when the brand launched) up through the late 1990’s.

“The oldest frame in our vaults is the 0101 optical model.” said creative director Monica Chong. “This model actually sparked the Cutler and Gross story as the first model to be made in our atelier above our flagship boutique in London. I think the frame tells you a lot about the classic, refined and practical approach we adopt when designing frames even today.”

This is vintage heaven (Photo: Courtesy Cutler & Gross).

Ms. Chong, who has been creative director at the brand for 16 years, often turns to the Vault for a source of inspiration as she designs future collections. “My favourite model would have to be the 0711 Red Black White model. It has the right balance of classic colours and quirky design with its multilayered silhouette and deep wrap around sunglass frame,” she wrote to us via email. She also noted that the 0711 was Cutler and Gross’ first pair of glasses to grace the cover of British Vogue.

While the current stock in the Vault was all previously unsold, a few famous frames have sat on these shelves. Ms. Chong divulged: “We have over the years stocked the Persol folding aviator with blue lenses as worn by Steve McQueen, the Cazal glasses made famous in Jamel Shabazz’s book Back in the Days, and the notorious Porche wrapped sunglasses beloved by Yoko Ono.”

The Vintage Vault came to be in the ’90s due to the era’s frenzy for vintage clothing. The brand’s co-founder Tony Gross came up with the idea and treated it as a personal project, displaying frames of his own design alongside styles he found while traveling the world. The very first Vault was in the London flagship, located in the Knightsbridge neighborhood, and was designed by the architectural firm Softroom, before they were known as a global design force.

“As the early Cutler and Gross designs became more covetable, the [Vintage Vault] has taken more of a prominent position in our boutiques,” Ms. Chong admitted.

While any customer is welcome to venture in and check out the frames on their own, history buffs might want to call ahead. Ms. Chong told Observer: “We do welcome appointments as this allows us the time to share the stories of our amazing glasses.”

The seven stars set to rule the red carpet in 2016

When it comes to celebrity style, the New Year signals only thing: awards season. As we try to furiously cram in twice-weekly trips to the cinema before the Golden Globe Awards on January 10, for the stars it means endless fittings and meetings with their stylists. While we can’t wait to see what red carpet confections the big-name nominees rock-up in, such as Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence, we thought we’d give a heads up on the emerging talent to have on your style radar.

Saoirse Ronan

Strictly speaking, Saoirse (pronounced Seer-sha, in case you were wondering) is not new to the red carpet; the New York-born, Dublin-based actress has been quietly beavering away on films ever since she got her big break when, aged 12, she starred opposite Keira Knightley in Atonement.

Now 21, 2016 is set to be her year after her performance in Brooklyn has seen her nominated for awards at both the Golden Globe and SAGs. She’s enlisted a new stylist and it shows – London-based Elizabeth Slatzman, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, is also the woman responsible for dressing Gwyneth Paltrow. Ronan and Saltzman are already proving to be a killer combination: Ronan is clearly a young woman who likes to experiment with silhouettes and colourways; she’s worn everyone from Emilia Wickstead to Burberry so far, always with an effortless approach.

Brie Larson

Prepare to see a lot more of Larson, for mid-January sees the release of Room, the film in which Larson plays a kidnapped mother. Her performance has earned her an award for a Golden Globe and a SAG Award, meaning she’ll be attending every pre-awards luncheon Hollywood has to offer.

For such events the 26-year-old calls upon stylist Christopher Campbell, who helps her secure a wardrobe of skirts and dresses in simple, classic shapes but made modern in bold hues.

Caitriona Balfe

Fans of TV series Outlander will already have Balfe on their radar. The 36-year-old plays Claire Beauchamp in the hit show, and is looking to add a Golden Globe to her trophy cabinet – not bad for a model-turned-actress.

Deutch in Dior

Dress: kissy bridesmaid

The Dublin-born beauty used to be a regular on the international catwalks, walking frequently for luxury fashion houses Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton during her twenties. Her model poise certainly stands out on the red carpet: just check out her stance at last year’s SAG Awards in London label Solace.

Alicia Vikander

If you’re not already familiar with Vikander, then may we ask under which rock you have been hiding for the past year? The 27-year-old Swede broke out with three films this year (four if you count The Danish Girl, released in the UK on January 1) and picked up a modelling assignment for Louis Vuitton along the way.

2016 looks set to be just as busy; her performance alongside Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl has put her in the running for accolades at both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. We’re sure she’ll tackle both with just the same amount of Scandi minimalism that has made her such a refreshing fixture on the red carpet so far.

Joanne Froggatt

After five years and 52 episodes playing maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey, Joanne Froggatt might just have something to celebrate if her stars align on January 10, when she’ll find out if she’s bagged the Best Supporting Actress role at the Golden Globes.

The 35-year-old has recently found her red carpet groove thanks to celebrity stylist Brad Goreski, who works with Jessica Alba and Rashida Jones, and is a co-host on Fashion Police. The difference in her style has been dramatic: instead of blending into the background, she’s embraced flowing gowns and embellished minidresses to make an impact. RIP Mrs Bates.

Maika Monroe

Her name may mean nothing to you now (aside to its similarities to a certain late, famous Ms Monroe), but a trip to the cinema in 2016 will make Maika Monroe pretty unavoidable: the photogenic blonde is set to star in six films over the next 12 months, including blockbuster Independence Day: Resurgence.

The 22-year-old ticks off all the qualities you’d expect in a twenty-something, California-born movie star: pretty, athletic… yet she really does fulfil the latter, as she was on course to become a professional kiteboarder before Hollywood came knocking, even moving to the Dominican Republic in order to train full-time. We think she’s still finding her feet when it comes to narrowing down her signature red carpet look, which will make her ascent in 2016 all the more interesting.

Zoey Deutch

Deutch is another relative newcomer who is set to assert herself on the style circuit in 2016, thanks to seven new film releases (catch her first up alongside Zac Efron in Dirty Grandpa).

The 21-year-old turned heads in Dior at this year’s Elle Women in Hollywood Awards, and has hit all the right notes in designs by Sportmax and Tanya Taylor at previous industry events. With her classic looks, we wouldn’t be surprised if a big beauty or fashion house signed her up before the year is out.

Modest details tame sexy gowns

Sexy in bridal gowns isn’t new, but barely there looks have leaped off the backs of Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez and made their way from red carpet to wedding.

What about scandalizing your grandmother, priest or old Uncle Harry? Can you look good on your big day while quenching your thirst for ooh-la-la trends and appeasing the more demure gathered for your wedding?

Absolutely, designers and bridal experts said. Others are more pointed: Be yourself and to heck with what anybody else thinks.

Of course, we don’t all have the bodies — and lifestyles — of Bey, Kim and J. Lo at a time when attention to the body in bridal as opposed to the dress has increased.

“It’s more about the body now,” said Vera Wang, whose spring 2016 bridal look-book is filled with sexy sheers that show all. “What we’re trying to do more is really capture a certain sense of intimacy in body language.”

So how do we adapt sexy illusion looks, sheers and cutouts to our shapes, as well as to any outside pressures for a more modest approach?

There’s strapless, for instance, and then there’s plunging in necklines and backs.

If you’re looking to make a statement up top but need a bit more coverage for certain relatives, or the church, mosque or synagogue, add-on pieces are plentiful and a lot more stylish than they used to be, said Anja Winikka, site director for the bridal world’s TheKnot.com.

“The idea that ‘it’s my rite of passage and I’ll translate a trend the way I want’ includes some pretty sexy styles,” she said. “You can add a stole or a cardigan without spoiling your look.”

http://media.arkansasonline.com/img/photos/2016/01/02/resized_99263-sexygown1-0103_1-20524_t300.jpg?8aff03de2423e912a2467e97388a07f5331c05b6

Dress: bridesmaid dresses

Elle Strauss, fashion director for Brides magazine, urged brides who plan to plunge to pull back elsewhere.

“If you’re going to do a plunging neckline, keep everything else really simple and chic,” she suggested. “The hair and makeup. You’re not necessarily going to do a full lip or too much eye makeup. The plunging component is your statement.”

Designer Monique Lhuillier’s advice to brides in need of a little modesty is to think tulle.

“For a modern bride with a traditional ceremony, I would recommend a tulle wrap. It will keep her a bit more covered during the ceremony, but it’s sheer, so guests will still have a sense of the dress underneath and it can be removed for the reception,” she said.

Backless or barely there backs are also part of the new sexy in bridal. Winikka has a solution for that, too, if showing too much skin is a problem.

“Put on a long veil for the church to cover it up,” she said. “Veils can provide a lot of coverage.”

Keren Craig, co-founder with Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, said backs are just as important as fronts nowadays.

“It’s what your guests will see throughout the ceremony,” Craig said. “An illusion back with delicate buttons and vintage-inspired lace is a beautiful way to add interest to your dress.”

Chapman agreed that flourishes can help with more risque styles.

“Brides are becoming more daring for their wedding-day looks and opting for seductive silhouettes,” she said. “Keren and I like to balance these bold shapes with romantic details such as soft tulle, floral appliques and embroidered lace.”

Some brides now buy two dresses or more. Those who worry about wearing barely there during the ceremony may want to consider a more modest look for the “I dos” and then change for fun, fun, fun at the reception.

Convertible gowns are more plentiful. They include “infinity” looks with attached wraps and sashes that can be tied and twisted in different ways, offering more coverage for church and sexier scenarios for later. Other convertibles have detachable trains and transform into minis.

Since Kate Middleton’s grand nuptials with Prince William in 2011, sleeves on bridal gowns have picked up steam. A gown with sleeves can offer options for sexy without revealing anything at all.

“Try sheer sleeves if you want to be a little risque but worry about going over the top,” Winikka said. “Sheer with lace, that’s sexy.”

Strauss suggested going sheer at the bottom if legs are your best asset and you’re uncomfortable with bareness elsewhere.

Cutouts are also happening in bridal gowns. Winikka said placement is everything for body type when it comes to those little slices.

“Cutouts can create that hourglass shape if you don’t have it,” she said. “Make sure they’re placed at the natural waist if you want to achieve that.”

Sexy is one thing, Winikka said, but surveys done by TheKnot.com show that more brides respond to questions about their dresses with: “I just want to look like me.”

Ultimately, Strauss said, a bride has to be true to herself when choosing a gown.

“You should dress for yourself,” she added. “You shouldn’t be worrying about Uncle Harry. This is your red carpet day.”
