The blue light band, with its low absorption in water (nearly 100 times lower than infrared light), is ideal for high-precision detection in shallow waters. In September 2025, Appotronics released the industry’s first underwater blue-light LiDAR product. Global production of underwater blue-light LiDARs is projected to reach 48,000 units in 2025, with an estimated average selling price of US5.71 per unit and a gross profit margin of 28.31%-45%. Its downstream customers include pool cleaning robot manufacturers, such as Wangyuan Technology. With the rapid penetration of pool cleaning robots, global demand is expected to exceed 10 million units in 2026, leading to a surge in underwater blue-light LiDAR production.
Currently, most mainstream lidar systems use infrared lasers, which exhibit strong penetration, long-range ranging capabilities, and wide applicability in terrestrial environments. However, infrared lasers have significant limitations in underwater environments: experimental data shows that 905 nm infrared light experiences energy attenuation of over 60% after traveling 1 meter in clear water; if the water is turbid, the attenuation is even more severe, making it difficult to meet the application requirements of underwater robots. The lidar penetration rate for consumer-grade underwater robots, such as pool cleaning robots, is still less than 5%. Global lidar shipments in the robotics field are expected to reach 400,000 units by 2025. With the gradual expansion of the global humanoid robot market in 2026, the potential demand for lidar may even exceed 100 million units.
