Let’s listen to Bill Maher: On Paris, religion and race, Maher walks a fascinating and tricky line

Bill Maher has made his mark as the comedian who refuses to toe the party line—any party’s line. He has come under attack by both the right and the left for his positions. This week’s show exemplifies his unflinching desire to muddy the waters of extremist thinking and get viewers to ask tough questions and refuse pre-packaged scripts.

He hit the spotlight after September 11 when he rejected the idea that the 9/11 attackers were cowards. Talking with conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza, Maher stated: “We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly.” The comment cost him his ABC show. But he soon landed back on his feet with HBO for “Real time with Bill Maher.”

Let's listen to Bill Maher: On Paris, religion and race, Maher walks a fascinating and tricky linepicture: low back wedding dressesThis week’s show, which tackled both the Paris attacks and campus protests over racial discrimination, reminds us why Maher is a comedian we need to watch. In the wake of the crises on the campuses of University of Missouri and Yale and on the heels of the Paris attacks, Maher rejected the fundamentalist thinking that often tends to frame these issues. With regard to the student protests, he attacks racism, but defends free speech. And in connection to the Paris attacks, he asks why liberals refuse to condemn the oppressive fundamentalism connected to the version of Islam practiced by terrorists.

While we might disagree with his positions, Maher makes some provocative points. Even more important he asks viewers to resist intellectual extremism and dogmatic ideologies. This means that we can condemn Islamic extremism without condemning all Islamic people. And it means that we can fight structural racism while also wondering if the student protesters’ demands are reasonable.

Let’s be clear. Bill Maher can say some outrageous things. He once compared his dogs to “retarded children.” But it would be a mistake to dismiss his interventions because they come from a comedian known for being caustic and controversial. Again and again Maher is willing to ask the questions no one wants to ask. And one of his key themes is frustration over simple-minded responses to complex issues.

After opening with a sign of solidarity with the French people, he asked: How can we respond in a way that allows us to forcefully condemn the attackers while avoiding a full-scale condemnation of Islam? In an interview with Asra Nomani, Maher wonders why liberals “will not stand up against Sharia Law, which is the law in so many Muslim countries, which is the law of oppression?” Discussing extremist thinking with Nomani, he states, “I am absolutely sure that ISIS thinks that everything they do—every horrific crime, every atrocity—is an act of justice, and an act for god.”

Maher’s point it that there is an Islamic extremism that is real and the left has lost the vocabulary for speaking about it meaningfully. In an effort to avoid demonizing an entire religion, he argues, there has been silence on the very real threats of Islamic extremism. It is an issue that drives Maher nuts and it’s one that will immediately get him called out as an Islamaphobe.

Carolyn Hax: Being an idiot, acting like an idiot are two different things

HI, CAROLYN: Is there a difference between being called an idiot (for example) and someone saying you’re acting like an idiot? Supposedly, one is less offensive than the other, according to a certain significant person in my life. — MATTER OF SEMANTICS

ANSWER: I think there’s a huge difference, but that doesn’t matter.

Your significant person thinks so, and that’s what matters, right? And you apparently don’t agree, which of course also matters.

So: (a) Stop calling this or any person an idiot, and instead say he or she is acting like one; even better, find a nicer way to make your point altogether.

And: (b) When he or she asks you to stop acting like an idiot, resist the urge to react and instead consider the context:

picture: chiffon bridesmaid dresses uk— Did you do something thoughtless and this is just your significant person’s rather rough way of saying, “Please stop doing that”?

— Does that phrase bother you, and when you say so are you looking for a simple apology but instead getting shut down with lawyerly semantics?

— Does even your slightest misstep bring down the hammer, however it’s worded, and no matter of semantics can disguise the fact that you may have granted this person more significance than is deserved?

For what it’s worth, calling someone an idiot diminishes the whole person while “acting like an idiot” addresses only the behavior. That’s the difference.

Neither one is a field of daisies, but certainly the latter is a lot easier to sell as something that could be said with affection, if both of you comfortably talk that way. A stretch, but possible.

It’s a big topic in child-rearing, too. You don’t tell a kid, “You’re a bad boy,” you say, “You made a bad choice.”

If someone’s outright calling you an idiot, then I hope it’s your old teammate from the 2004 Red Sox.

HI, CAROLYN: A few months back, my husband was asked to be a groomsman in a friend’s wedding. This is a very recent friend and he was surprised at the request. However, he was flattered and, at the time, thought it sounded like fun. The wedding is a destination wedding that will require him/us to travel 500 miles away.

Since he agreed, we’ve both realized what an inconvenience in time and money this trip would be, and he’s no longer keen. Is there any way to take back his decision to be in the wedding? — BOWING OUT

ANSWER: There’s no way that isn’t a slap to the face, not unless you have the out that etiquette always leaves: when you’re forced to back out for a reason that’s much less pleasant than the wedding. So, getting sick, getting injured, getting laid off, having a close relative get sick, having your house flood from a burst pipe the day you’re supposed to leave, etc. Should you be so fortunate not to have these to excuse you, you go.

Everything We Learned About Shonda Rhimes From Her Book, Year of Yes

Shonda Rhimes’s Year of Yes, available today, is less a memoir than it is a self-help book. For one year, one of the most powerful showrunners on television said yes to everything. She said yes to commencement speeches, yes to accepting more help, and — you guessed it — yes to herself. She spent more time with the people she loved, shed 127 pounds, and learned how to be a happier person. In this way, Year of Yes is not a burn book. It is not a ribald tale spilling hot industry tea. There are no VH1 behind-the-scenes moments explaining how Isaiah Washington was fired from Grey’s Anatomy or what went down with Columbus Short on Scandal. There are no “What if?” casting scenarios. Instead, there are small, charmingly odd, inspirational stories, like how she reacted to the Red Wedding scene in Game of Thrones to how writing Cristina Yang was writing the woman she hoped to become. Quite simply, it’s a book about how she learned to take care of herself, and how you might be able to as well. Welcome your new life coach, Shonda Rhimes.

Olivia Pope gets her red-wine-drinking habits from Rhimes.

Even when she was riding high with Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, she writes that she was “miserable.” “Truly, deeply unhappy.” As such, she had one thing she turned to at the end of the day. “And at the end of every day, as a reward, I poured myself a glass of red wine. Red wine was the only joy in Shondaland.”

Rhimes felt the pressure of being a black, female showrunner, or what she calls an F.O.D. — a “First Only Different.”

“When you are an F.O.D.,” she writes, “you are saddled with that burden of extra responsibility — whether you want it or not.” She felt the pressure when she dodged questions about diversity or race. “You can’t be raised black in America and not know,” she writes. “This wasn’t just my shot. It was ours.” And then she referenced that pivotal moment when we meet Olivia Pope’s father on Scandal:

I was doing a thing that the suits had said could not be done on TV. And America was proving them wrong by watching. We were literally changing theface of television. I was not about to make a mistake now. You don’t get second chances.

Not when you’re an F.O.D.

Second chances are for future generations. That is what you are building when you are an F.O.D. Second chances.

As Papa Pope told his daughter Olivia: “You have to be twice as good to get half as much …”

I didn’t want half. I wanted it all. And so I worked four times as hard.

Celebration Of ABC's TGIT Line-up Presented By Toyota And Co-hosted By ABC And Time Inc.'s Entertainment Weekly, Essence And People - Red Carpetpicture: vintage inspired wedding dressesShe met Toni Morrison and all she wanted to talk about wasGrey’s Anatomy.

Her first big “yes” was accepting the role as the commencement speaker at Dartmouth, her alma mater. She closed by telling the graduates that she once wanted to be Toni Morrison. But that when she actually had dinner with Toni Morrison, “all she wanted to talk about was Grey’s Anatomy.”

She remembers nothing about getting interviewed by Oprah.

“Here is what I remember about being interviewed by Oprah. A white-hot flashing light behind my eyes. A strange numbness in my limbs. A high-pitched buzzing sound in my head. So, y’know … nothing. NOTHING.”

She constructed her first Shondaland in the pantry.

She calls herself an introverted, “unusual” kid who was more content to play in her own imagination than out in the world. One of the things she liked to do was play in the pantry for hours with cans.

The world I created inside the small closet filled with canned goods and cereal was serious; these days I would describe it as a winter-is-coming-where-are-my-dragons kind of solo play date but this was not HBO. This was the suburbs in the 1970s … My three-year-old imagination made a world of its own. The big cans of yams ruled over the peas and green beans while the tiny citizens of Tomato Paste Land planned a revolution designed to overthrow the government. There were hearings and failed assassination attempts and resignations. Every once in a while, my mom would open the pantry door, flooding my world with light. She’d politely tell me she needed vegetables for dinner. The canned judiciary would sentence a can of corn to death for treason and I’d deliver the guilty party into the hands of the executioner.

And that, everyone, describes everything that’s happened in Scandal.

She ran around the room when she watched the Red Wedding scene of Game of Thrones.

One of her favorite shows is Game of Thrones. And the Red Wedding? Whew. “I literally run around the room. I do that sometimes. When I get overly excited, I run around the room. I did it during the Red Wedding scene of Game of Thrones. I did it when they picked up the pilot for Grey’s Anatomy to series.”

She wants to make it clear that she gets help at home.

She writes a great deal about her nanny Jenny McCarthy (no, not that lady), whom she describes as “the SEAL Team Six of nannies.” “I’ve read a lot of books written by and about working women and I’m struck by the fact no one ever seems to want to talk about having help at home,” she writes. “Which I think is not so helpful to the women who don’t have help at home.” So she’s declaring it proudly: She has a nanny and she loves her.

Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy was the woman she aspired to be.

It wasn’t just you who loved Cristina Yang. Shonda Rhimes loves Cristina Yang fiercely and passionately. She isn’t simply a character for Rhimes, but a woman who could be what she felt she wasn’t. Ending her story was one of the hardest things she had to do. “I am going to miss Cristina Yang so much that my heart hurts,” she writes. “I’m not sure how I’m going to cope.” She elaborates:

This Cristina that [Sandra Oh and I] made was a revelation. She was never silenced. Never small. Never too insecure to make good on her natural gifts. The Cristina of our collective dreams is larger than life and sure of her genius. And, as drawn by us, while often afraid, our Cristina was able to overcome her fears through sheer strength of will. She made bold choices. She felt fearless even when she was terrified …

The fictional person Sandra and I made is beautiful and intimidating. Put Cristina up against any real person and there is no contest. No one else stands a chance. It’s unfair and awful. And not at all a way to measure a real human being.

And yet. Who the hell cares?

She is the goal. She is freedom.

And that, of course, is why I created her. And I think why Sandra created her. For me, she was not just what I imagined. She was what I needed.

In the acknowledgments, Rhimes returns to Cristina Yang. She remembers a conversation she had with Oh when she told her she wrote this book so that she could learn to speak up for herself. Oh asks, “What did you do with something if you were too afraid to say it before your Year of Yes?” Rhimes replies, “YOU said it for me.”

Sometimes you have to say No to say Yes.

Speaking of Oh, she was not the network’s first choice to play Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy. Rhimes writes that they wanted to cast “some actor” as Cristina who everyone thought was great. “I honestly can’t remember who the actor was … everyone thought she was great.” (See what we mean about the lack of gossip?) But she felt in her gut that the actor wasn’t right for the part, so she said No, in what was her “first” professional and “favorite” No. Then she found Sandra Oh, and the rest was magic.

Statler Hilton restaurant dish and other news from Dallas this week

Downtown Dallas has things going on. There are hot details from the renovation of the Statler Hilton hotel and a debate over parking. These are some of the things that happened in the city this week:

Park it here

Does downtown Dallas need more parking? Is it hard to find a space, and are you forced to walk blocks in unpleasant weather? Or are there plenty of lots, and people in Dallas are spoiled.

It seems like that would be a yes-no matter, but Dallas officials have decided that a study needs to be done to evaluate the parking situation downtown. Buildings that were previously vacant are filling up, the Dallas Farmers Market is getting a makeover, there’s the second downtown rail line being planned. A search for consultants is underway, which sounds like a choice gig.

Just like Paris

On October 25, the city council voted to make it easier for restaurants to build sidewalk cafes by lowering the fees and restrictions, including dropping the application fee to $100 (previously $750), and the annual fee to $200 (previously $1,000 to $2,500).

“Businesses in areas like Bishop Arts and downtown Dallas are wanting to promote street life and bring people out and beautify our streets,” says Ashley Saunders in the city’s planning department. “We had pilot programs where we changed the fee structure for things like awnings, canopies, and landscaping, and got great feedback.”

“Businesses were previously paying very high fees, and due to that, not many applications were submitted,” she says. “Since [sidewalks] are the right of way, we’re bound by the Constitution of Texas and cannot gift right of way, there has to be some kind of consideration for its use. But this is only for the benefit of the city. It’s a way to define street character and encourage the street life we’re looking for.”

Statler details

Statler Hiltonpicture: royal blue bridesmaid dressesRestoration of the Statler Hilton hotel in downtown Dallas, which has sat empty for 15 years, is underway. Managing partner Frank Zaccanelli, who once co-owned the Dallas Mavericks, calls it “probably the city of Dallas’ most important building” and says his top priority is to maintain its historical importance.

The lobby floor will stay the same, as will the staircases, original marble, and overall structure. There will be hotel rooms on the lower five floors and residences on the top 11 floors.

The most exciting revelation is that it will have a 24-hour diner. We need restaurants that are open 24 hours. It’ll also have a “high-end” restaurant, two-level bar, retail, office space, and rooftop pool, and a refurbishing of the legendary second-story ballroom, where performers such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra played. It’s scheduled to open in October 2016.

Mansion gone

The beautiful old house at 4901 Live Oak St. is going to be razed. This is the one that a couple was trying to turn into a wedding chapel until neighbors protested. The address is zoned for “multifamily residential,” and the property has a new owner. The identity of that new owner is not known, but the candidate seems to be a company called Durham Builders.

A couple should race for their love, race for their marriage and race for the beautiful Landybridal Wedding Dresses UK collection.

The game is kind of a marathon. But different from a marathon, there will be ten games in the whole race. Participants should complete all the games and finish the race. The first couple arriving at the destination wins. They will be out if they fail in any games. They should run to the first game center. The first game is three-legged race. The couple should tie their foot together and pass the single-plank bridge. If they fall into the water under the bridge, they fail and cannot proceed. After the first game, they should run to the second game center. The second game is “Ride to Fight”. One participant of the group swings the other on his or her back. And the one on his or her back should fight with another person from another group. Anyone who fails to the ground loses the game. For example, there are 2 groups, group A and group B. A1 wings A2 on his back while B1 wings B2 on his back. A2 fights with B2. However, while they fight, A1 and B1 cannot attack each other. Then the winner comes to the third game center to finish the “Deliver the Balloon”. The couple has to carry the balloon with their chest together and deliver it to the place stated. While transferring the balloon, they cannot use their hands and they need to answer ten questions correctly. If the balloon falls to the ground, they answer less than ten questions correctly or they spend more than 5 minutes, they fail. After finishing all the ten games successfully, they should run to the destination. The first one wins. They can pick up their wedding dresses from the wedding dresses UK collection. And they will also get a vvip card. They can get great discounts on any products at Landybridal.co.uk. The most importantly, they couple can get their wedding fund to perfect their wedding ceremony.

Supermodel Oluchi Weighs In on the Latest Global Style Debate

Ah, yes, the style of New York women versus our Parisian sistren: the great, inconclusive fashion debate. We’ve mulled over this topic for years and have yet to come up with an unequivocal answer on which city does it better. But what of the fashion debate between New Yorkers and our Nigerian counterparts? The relatively newfound Lagos Fashion & Design Week proved this past week that the Nigerian city is filled with soigné, globe-trotting locals, who, with their elaborate and florid mix of local and European designers with traditional garb, could be stiff competition. Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba is a fixture in the cabals of both fashion capitals, and as she attests, it’s a bit like comparing apples and oranges: We’re certainly of the same ilk, but the approach is completely distinct.

Here, the host of Africa’s Next Top Model and former Victoria’s Secret model tells us how Lagos women prep for those well-documented OTT weddings, how New York influenced her own approach to personal style, and the one thing fashionable New York and Nigerian women can agree upon.

Growing up, was fashion a huge part of your life?

I spent most of my after-school hours at a local fashion house called Henrietta Design Collections. She specializes in made-to-measure traditional Nigerian and Western outfits for her clients. I would hang around, watch, and assist her with errands. Those were my early associations with fashion. She actually introduced me to modeling.

When you first moved to New York from Lagos, what immediately jumped out to you about the style of New York women versus the women of Lagos?

Ah! I immediately noticed the sneakers, jeans, T-shirts, and denim jackets of New Yorkers. As the season changes, their casual uniform always stays the same.

What’s the greatest difference and similarity between New York City and Lagos women, fashion-wise?

The style of New Yorkers and Nigerians couldn’t be more different. New Yorkers are effortless and cool, while the Nigerian woman is more feminine and embellished. However, we all wear the same accessories:Hermès, Chanel, Céline, Saint Laurent, Givenchy. Lagos women also flaunt their culture unapologetically, even when two women walk in a room with the same outfit and accessories. Where they are from locally has a lot to do with how they style their garments.

picture: royal blue bridesmaid dressesHow did you bring a sense of Lagos fashion into your New York wardrobe?

Well, I had to adapt to the style culture to blend in. I updated my closet to main classics that never go out of style . . . including countless jeans. But I infused a little bit of Lagos fashion into my New York wardrobe by mixing knee-length, plain-fabric tunics with jeans on Fridays, and wore caftan dresses on the weekend, especially during summer.

What’s the fashionable Nigerian woman’s approach to shopping? Is she going to local boutiques? Is she shopping online? Is she traveling to Europe or the States to shop?

She does it all! The retail experience is changing in Nigeria, so most of the international designs are either purchased online at a retail outlet like Mall for Africa or at the Palms Shopping Mall in Lekki, Lagos. Others shop at the luxury concept fashion store Alara or Temple Muse. And for a range of designs made in their native country, Nigerian women shop at Grey Velvet.

With local stores and boutiques like these competing with the price points of their counterparts abroad in London, Milan, New York, and Paris, the days of flying to shop is coming to an end. Nigerians now shop with a sense of pride and confidence, knowing that the product they would normally buy a travel ticket to get is now available in their country, and they can trust that it’s all original.

Attending chic, over-the-top weddings seems to be customary for Nigerian society—and your fashion doesn’t disappoint! How do Nigerian women prepare for an occasion like that? Are you customizing pieces, having things flown in?

Weddings are a huge tradition in Nigeria. Our clothes are mostly customized with authentic local fabrics like aso-oke and lace. These are always elaborate and glamorous. Apart from the actual outfit, which is usually made from exquisite embroideries, we would usually wear a head wrap and lots of jewelry. Gowns from brands like Valentino are now being worn to traditional events, as they fit the aesthetic of our clothes. The shoes and other accessories tend to be from top international brands.

And what about the accompanying beauty look for those kind of events? With New York women it seems like we’re all addicted to our manicure-pedicures and our hairstylists. What are Nigerian women’s beauty essentials?

So that’s as similar as we get to New Yorkers—Nigerian women are impeccably presented always, and hardly ever caught off-guard. Perfectly created hair wigs are trendy at the moment, as most women are growing out their natural hair. So a weekly or biweekly spa regimen and hair therapy at Natures Gentle Touch salon in Victoria Island, Lagos, is a must. Makeup is huge in Lagos and everyone has a makeup artist. You do not have to be famous to have a makeup artist!

For Halloween, Fashion Stories to Scare You Silly

The streets this weekend will be filled with people wearing items of clothing intended to terrify, repulse and otherwise freak out viewers. But as “Fashion Victims: The Dangers of Dress Past and Present,” a new book from Alison Matthews David, an associate professor in the School of Fashion at Ryerson University in Toronto, makes clear, zombie costumes are the least of it.

Since at least the 19th century, women and men have been wearing garments that were truly horrifying in the damage they caused — both to the wearer and to the world around them.

As far as wardrobe scares go, it doesn’t get much more dramatic. Naomi Campbell falling off her giant Vivienne Westwood platforms (a story that is included in Ms. David’s book) has nothing, for example, on the tale of the arsenic-laced green dyes in clothes and accessories of the late 19th century, whose poison leached into the wearer’s skin. Or of the crinoline skirts that caught fire and burned the women inside to death, or the hobble skirts that caused their wearers to go tumbling to the pavement. Or of the woman who was strangled by her scarf on a ski lift in the 1970s, thanks to “long scarf syndrome,” the Dr. Who-spurred neckwear trend, or the girls in 2005 who, in an effort to copy the actress Sienna Miller, started sporting long boho gypsy skirts whose hems brushed dangerously close to candles on the floor around them.

picture: chiffon wedding dressThough this is all, on one level, clearly alarmist, and it would be wrong to draw a general conclusion from the evidence presented that fashion does more harm than good, it’s nevertheless eye-opening.

Which was, it turns out, Ms. David’s goal. Speaking on the phone from Canada, she said her point was not to indict the industry, though she acknowledged the book could be read that way, but rather to cause “people to take a second look at what they buy, and think about the other people it may have touched.”

“I wouldn’t be in fashion if I didn’t believe it could empower us and protect us and be a power for good,” she said. “But I do think the way it is produced and marketed can cause harm.”

And not just to women. She also, she said, wanted people to understand that “it’s not as simple as ‘why are women such fashion victims?’ Men have been equally gullible, wearing top hats that caused mercury poisoning in the craftsmen,” not to mention brightly colored socks (in the late 19th century) created from aniline dyes that caused the wearer to have sores and skin diseases.

So did the experience of researching the book, which took about a decade and included not only delving into fashion archives but also into old medical texts and digging garments out of storage and having them (and, for that matter, modern cosmetics) analyzed and tested in various modern laboratories, change how its author thinks about what she buys?

“I probably shy away from fast fashion more than I would have,” Ms. David said. “I try to buy clothes made locally, by Canadian designers, out of recycled fibers. But I still buy lipstick, though I might get it tested in our physics lab for lead content before I actually use it.”

In the meantime, she is at work on a new book, a study of “clothing and crime — how clothes have been used in smuggling, as disguise and as murder weapons.”

Murder weapons? Trick or treat.

What a bride wants: Relaxation and sophistication favored choices for bachelorette parties

As a rite of passage, the bachelorette party has long gotten a bum rap. Stereotypes persist of the bride’s night-before-the-wedding gathering as a ladies-only version of the raucous bachelor party. Yet the truth is, a growing number of brides crave a tasteful, relaxing and deeply personal send-off for their single days.

In fact, a relaxing getaway ranked high as an ideal bachelorette party for 59 percent of brides-to-be in the Ultimate Bridesmaids Census. Sixty-seven percent wanted dinner, dancing and time spent with their closest friends, and 23 percent wanted something non-traditional that really reflected their personal interests.

“Bachelorette parties are as unique as the women they celebrate,” says Michael Belot, general manager of Destination Kohler – home to AAA five-diamond and Forbes five-star hotel that hosts scores of brides, bridesmaids and weddings each year. “We’re seeing an emphasis on relaxation for the bride and companionship with her friends in today’s bachelorette parties. Brides want to spend their special night – and often an entire weekend – in a soothing, stress-free atmosphere before the hectic pace of their wedding day.”

So what are the things that brides and bridesmaids tell the Destination Kohler team they must have for their bachelorette soirees? Belot points to five in-demand elements:

1. Spa time

Whether it’s a group mani-pedi, a yoga class or a lunch of delicious, healthful spa cuisine, bachelorette groups crave spa time. Parties are looking for spas that offer a comprehensive list of salon services, familiar and new massages and body treatments, and easy access to luxury accommodations. For example, at Destination Kohler, bachelorette groups often book rooms in the Carriage House, which is located above the Forbes five-star Kohler Waters Spa. Participants can spend the day in their spa robes if they choose. “Kohler Waters Spa is by far the most popular request and activity among bachelorette parties, and is often the center of the trip,” says Garrett Mersberger, manager of Kohler Waters Spas. Playing to this trend, many resorts have created female-centric spa packages like the Girls Getaway.

2. Great food

Forget the pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and other de rigeur finger foods long associated with bridal showers. Modern bachelorette groups are looking for dining options that are luxurious and delicious, or that accommodate lifestyle needs such as gluten-free or low-calorie diets. Spa fare often fits well with this preference. Resorts with multiple dining options afford bachelorette guests the opportunity to dine lightly for lunch and then enjoy a more indulgent dinner.

3. Bonding activities

picture: vintage style bridesmaid dressesHitting the bar and dancing the night away are no longer the only bonding activities for bachelorette groups. From yoga classes and golf outings to wine and chocolate pairings, brides-to-be are looking for more diverse, sophisticated activities they can do with their girlfriends.

4. A location “away from it all”

Nearly a third of respondents in the Bridesmaid Census said they didn’t want to go crazy for a bachelorette party, they just wanted to enjoy time with their friends. Perhaps it’s because their lives are about to change dramatically. Maybe it’s a need to reaffirm the girlfriend bond that has seen them through life’s ups and downs to reach this happy point in their lives. Whatever their reasons, a growing number of brides are looking for a bachelorette experience that transports them and their closest friends far away from their daily routines. Some fulfill this wish by choosing a resort location far from home. Others may choose accommodations that are more intimate. At Destination Kohler, bachelorette parties can also opt to stay at Sandhill, the resort’s luxury private cabin that sits on 350 natural acres just a 10-minute drive from the resort.

5. Personalization

Twenty-three percent of surveyed brides said they wanted a bachelorette party that was deeply personal and tailored to their individual tastes and interests. For some, that’s a spa experience. For others, a golf getaway. Even when they’ve booked a bachelorette package, brides and their bridesmaids are looking for ways the resort can customize their experience. Add-ons are popular, from spa treatments to wine tastings.

Bachelorette party experiences are becoming as individual as the brides they celebrate, Belot notes. “Brides are not cookie cutter, so their bachelorette parties shouldn’t be either.”

High fashion and unfashionably late stars at ‘Miss You Already’ screening

I was told, “Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette, stars of ‘Miss You Already,’ plus VIPs Ed Norton, Cuba Gooding, Nicole Miller, Kick Kennedy, arrive 6 p.m.” Host Andrew Saffir didn’t. Nobody showed until 7ish. I sat alone in empty MoMA.

Earliest arrival, Lee Radziwill. Skinnier than my house key and seeming frail. Next, June Ambrose,Jay Z’s stylist. Someone whispered, “She’s wearing a Balmain that hasn’t come out yet.” And shouldn’t. Too short, too tight, too gold-embroidered. Also, she kept pulling up her crotch-high boots.

Down-to-earth Drew Barrymore actually kneeled down to chat. “I’m wearing Stella McCartney.” Stunning Drew’s dark appliquéd gown was a knockout. Also knocked out was the front, which showed everything but her scrapbook. Laughing, she tugged it closed. Said Toni Collette: “She’s shy. Not a tit kind of girl.”

Drew: “Who knows if this gown’s mine for keeps or not? I didn’t ask. Stella’s my dear friend. I love her. Friends play a big part in my life. This film’s about valuing friendship. Two women. I have two daughters. In the end, friends are all you have. Women put one foot in front of another. They’re heroes in life.”

The gorgeous gown was form-fitting. She manage to eat anything? “Please. I had lunch at Pastrami Queen. Big deli sandwich.”

Collette: “I play a charismatic, complicated woman who relies on those around her when becoming ill. We had lots of input so as not to mess up. I even checked with a family member who had a similar condition, and it’s a bitch.

“In the movie, I have a double mastectomy scene. It wasn’t as bad as you’d imagine because I actually have nothing up there to show in the first place.”

A flaky actress dingbat who annoys her daughter, with whom she hasn’t a good relationship. But what’s consuming me now is politics. I can’t stand what’s happening. Everything’s so difficult. I follow, but I get upset. I speak to about 15 people a day. All about politics. I like Obama. He’s so distinguished. And I respect everything Obama does.”

You a Democratic voter?

“I live in California, but I can’t vote. I’m British.”

Not that I’m one to brag…

Pardon — but back while every newscaster, reporter, pollster burbled about will-Biden-won’t-Biden, and before he weaseled out, I told you — flat-out! — he’s going no place. Not like I didn’t think so. I knew. Too old, too chicken, too often he tried and lost, too standoffish in terms of romancing fund-raisers and contributions. He just wanted limelight. I told you!
