RaeLynn’s Boutique: Prom Trends

Prom season 2017 is almost here, and with thousands of gowns to choose from, RaeLynn’s Boutique might just be your go-to gown store this year! Steph Weber, General Manager and Buyer of RaeLynn’s Boutique, shows us what’s “trending”!

Here are today’s model descriptions:

flow2Our first model, Riley, is wearing a black prom dresses uk by Ellie Wilde. Ellie is a hot new designer this year and her designs are amazing. Florals are back this year of course and this is one of her best selling styles for us. The fit of this dress is fabulous with an off the shoulder look.

pink6pink7Paige is wearing a more couture looking dress by Sherri Hill. Sherri is the top designer in the industry and usually sets the trends for the season. This dress is a high low that features a halter neckline. This dark champagne color is popular this year and Sherri does it so well.

pink4pink5Our next model, Mya, is red hot in this all lace dress. I can’t tell you the number of times someone has tried on this amazing dress. It is also available in royal blue. The lace trend is perfect for someone who might be looking for something on the classy side. This particular dress is great if you want a simple, elegant look without all the beadwork. We also love the keyhole back on this dress.

pink1pink3Maddie is wearing one this year’s of the hottest dresses by Blush. It’s a two piece that features a mermaid skirt with a fabulous ruffle back. This dress is amazing and is available in 3 different color combos. This is for the girl who wants to be the trendsetter at prom this year.

pinkish1pinkish2Our final model, Kennedy, is wearing a very traditional prom style that we absolutely love. This is another great style by Sherri Hill and the color is amazing. The chiffon bottom flows beautiful when she walks and the off the shoulder detail is so flattering.

The designer pink prom dresses at RaeLynn’s Boutique start around $300 and go up from there.

RaeLynn’s Boutique recently opened a second location in Carmel.

Fashion grad takes out top award with ‘Subtle Variance’

Nothing beats a good pair of shoes, one fashion graduate found recently.

Twenty-four-year-old Ganga Patel took out the 2016 Wellington Most Commercial Collection at New Zealand Fashion Tech’s end-of-year-show in November 2016.

More than 100 people had turned out for the show and it wasn’t just models going down the runway – Patel had to walk it too, a nerve-racking experience..

“I chose to wear flats so I wouldn’t fall off the stage!”

Her line of streetwear was judged the most likely to be sold out of the rest of her classmates’ designs.

It was only on the night Patel found out she had won.

“When I heard my name I was like, ‘Oh! Really?’. It was quite overwhelming.”

Patel has been making clothes for years and said when she was growing up she admired her cousin’s outfits and often black prom dresses uk up in them.

Her passion for fashion continued through high school where she took design classes before starting at NZ Fashion Tech, studying fashion technology for three years.

Last year was the final year of her course.

“I came out of it and I just loved it. It made me more confident about what I was making this year.”

The winning fashion line was one of her final projects. Working over six weeks Patel created her line, calling it Subtle Variance.

She created the clothes for anyone to wear and wanted the outfits to reflect the idea that variations in people, such as skin colour or gender, didn’t matter.

“With the models, I did stipulate for them to be as multicultural as possible,” she said.

As a bonus, one of the models even asked if she could buy the outfit she wore down the catwalk.

“So that was a compliment in itself,” Patel said.

For now, the fashion graduate is working at the Hill Hats factory to save to buy her own sewing machine and start off a brand.

First Lady of Fashion: Michelle Obama Leaves a Lasting Style Legacy

When she walked out of the White House to greet the Italian Prime Minster Matteo Renzi and his wife for her final state dinner she was stunning.

Dressed in a sleeveless, chainmail, rose-gold, Atelier Versace gown and sleek hair swooped over to one side, First Lady Michelle Obama solidified her fashion legacy.

Over the years, the first lady has wowed trend watcher with deeply personal style choices that were a decided departure from the traditional, conservative wear of first ladies of yesteryear.

“It’s like my music,” Obama said at a White House roundtable in 2011. “Everything in my closet is something that I love, so that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever it is. I think that tends to be my philosophy.”

She’s a first lady who felt equally comfortable donning sleeveless pink prom dresses uk with floral prints or wearing a Wes Gordon metallic houndstooth jacket and high waist skinny jeans.

Obama has a conservative style that appeals to the office, but also a trendy side that appeals to the masses, said Joiee Thorpe, fashion editor for Essence Magazine. As one of the first women in the White House with a statuesque figure, Obama knows and is confident about what works for her physique, Thorpe added.

“That’s the major key for women in America everywhere, to get it right,’ Thorpe said. “When you really get it right, that’s when you know how to dress your body and no one can tell you anything. She wears a dress and it sells out immediately.”

At President Obama’s final state of the union address, the first lady wore a sleeveless, marigold midi dress by fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez. The dress originally priced at $2,095.00 and on sale for $628 at Neiman Marcus, was sold out before the president finished his speech and set social media abuzz.

Obama’s penchants for rocking dresses that show her well-toned arms influenced dress trends.

And she’s even shown a little cleavage from time to time.

At the China State Dinner in 2015, she wore a long, black, off the shoulder, mermaid-style Vera Wang dress.

Speaking at the 2012 Democratic National Convention she was poised, yet fashionable wearing a sleeveless, pink and gold Tracy Reese green prom dresses and pink, suede heels from J. Crew. The shoes retail at $245 and are so popular they are hard to keep in stock to this day.

She has raised the fashion bar for other first ladies to follow, making room for them to play with their own style.

“First ladies will be comfortable making choices if they’re the type of person who likes fashion. They will no longer be afraid to make decisions that aren’t ultra conservative. They won’t be afraid to expose their shoulders or wear a pencil skirt or wear prints and patterns.”

She is not only a trendsetter with her wardrobe, she also set trends by changing up her hairstyle.

In August 2013, she rocked honey blonde highlights at a Washington D.C. movie premiere and wore the same highlight in layers in March 2014. But whether it’s long tresses with a bang or a bob cut with a deep middle part, her hair was always flawless for the occasion at hand, Thorpe said adding “how hair goes with an outfit makes a big difference.”

“First and foremost, I wear what I love,” she said in an interview in 2009 with Vogue. “That’s what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion.”

Who might dress new first lady Melania Trump on Inauguration Day?

Fashion arbiters the world over will be scrutinising the outfit Melania Trump wears on Friday, January 20 at the inauguration of her husband, US president-elect Donald Trump.

If history is anything to go by, the first-lady-in-waiting’s ensemble for the Inaugural Ball will be in a shade of red, white or blue, reflecting the American flag.

In keeping with tradition, an American designer will almost certainly purple prom dresses Trump, and Zac Posen (who has dressed Michelle Obama, Uma Thurman and Rihanna, among others) is a front-runner.

There are many big names, however, who are not so keen to be considered, including Marc Jacobs, who is no fan of Trump’s husband. Tom Ford has also said she should not choose his collections, because they are not made in the United States but in Italy. He added that a first lady should wear clothes “at a price point that is accessible to most Americans”.

Another dissenting voice is Sophie Theallet, whose independent label has dressed Michelle Obama since President Obama entered office in 2009.

“As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady,” says Theallet. “I encourage my fellow designers to do the same.”

Designers from the Middle East have rarely featured in the wardrobe of previous first ladies. “Fashion is boundless and it shouldn’t have political affiliations, nor should it discriminate,” says Dubai-based couturier to the rich and famous, Michael Cinco.

“It would be an honour and a pleasure to dress the incoming first lady. She has vowed to strengthen her advocacy for the welfare of women and children, and she’s a woman of intelligence and beauty – and at 5’11″ [180cm], one of the tallest first ladies. So, I would certainly love to purple prom dress her.”

In exchange for a first lady wearing their pieces, designers are likely to receive worldwide media coverage rather than the hundreds of thousands of dirhams the couture itself might cost.

The White House remains stubbornly tight lipped about how the first lady’s vast wardrobe is obtained, but it is believed most outfits for major events are either “donated” or borrowed.

For the other, day-to-day outfits, despite having no clothing allowance or a salary, some first ladies choose to pay for them, albeit for a nominal fee.

“Mrs Obama pays for her clothing,” says Joanna Rosholm, Michelle Obama’s press secretary.

“For official events of public or historic significance, such as a state visit, the first lady’s clothes may be given as a gift by a designer and accepted on behalf of the US government. They are then stored by the National Archives.”

How Christian Siriano Won the Hearts of Celebs and Shoppers Everywhere

This past July, Leslie Jones was preparing to make the leap from Saturday Night Live cast member to legit movie actress, costarring alongside comedy’s biggest names in the hotly anticipated Ghostbusters. Jones should have been elated. Instead, she was stressed out. Not only was she under a daily siege of highly pub- licized, baldly racist attacks by social media trolls, but about two weeks before the movie’s premiere—the single most photographed night of her career—she had nothing to wear, and no prospects in sight. In desperation and disgust, Jones took to Twitter, calling out designers for not offering to help. Surfing above the hate mail came a reply: two “waving hand” emojis from Christian Siriano—his way of saying, “Come over here, girl. I’d love to celebrity dresses you.” (Her response: “yaaaaaassssss.”) At the premiere, Jones stepped onto the ectoplasm-green carpet in a regal, off-the-shoulder red Siriano. The designer Instagrammed her photo with the hashtag #prettywoman. Jones raves, “We are now friends for life! I love this man. He saw the beauty in me, in every woman.”

Fourteen days later, at the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama—the best thing to happen to American fashion since the Singer sewing machine—strode onstage to de- liver the most stirring speech of her political life in a simple, cobalt-blue full-skirted dress. Its designer? Christian Siriano.

Finally. It has taken nine long years for the arbiters of fashion to give in to the indisputable reality that Christian Siriano—the hair-gelled, finger-snapping alum not of Parsons or FIT but of Project Runway, season four—has the talent, focus, and obviously the perseverance to be a viable and, for a rapidly growing circle of wom- en, welcome force in American fashion.

It’s not as if Siriano has lacked for recognition. But fame, especially for a reality TV star, does not equal respect (see: Kardashians, Hiltons, Bachelorettes, et al.), and in an industry in which sharp- eyed insiders often compete for the self-satisfaction of anointing unknown talent, Siriano’s instant, unmistakably mass appeal following his Runway win was long cause for disdain. You can’t claim credit for “discovering” someone millions of viewers already chose. It didn’t help that the show’s sly editing had shaped Siriano into a cartoonish persona complete with crowd-pleasing catch-phrases like “Fierce!” and “Hot tranny mess!” (Runway host Tim Gunn nicknamed him “Woody Woodpecker.”)

Siriano grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of two teachers who divorced when he was five. He loved musical theater, and studied ballet alongside his older sister until he became more taken with the costumes than dance itself. By age 13, he was designing clothes, a passion that intensified in high school at Baltimore School of the Arts. After being rejected by FIT, he moved to London, earning a degree in fashion design at American InterContinental University while interning at Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. In New York after graduation, he made wedding red carpet dresses for private clients and briefly interned at Marc Jacobs. A friend told him about Runway. “I figured, I had no money; I just needed a job, so why not audition?,” he says. “People did warn me about the stigma attached to reality shows, but winning got me on Oprah, and Amy Poehler played me on Saturday Night Live. That was fun. But I also realized quickly that this wouldn’t last, so I decided early on to figure this thing out for myself.”

When Siriano, then 21, “walked in to audition, my first reaction was, ‘He’s just out of design school, not fully baked, so why are we seeing him?’ ” Gunn recalls. “He was in the room for half a minute when I turned to the judges and said, ‘I’ve been teaching for 30 years and have never met a fashion prodigy until today.’ If I had any worries, it was that Christian came equipped with such confidence he could have turned into an egomaniacal diva.” On that count, Gunn is “delighted but not surprised to be wrong.”

At Siriano’s no-nonsense, sketch-lined workrooms in New York City’s Chelsea, the designs-in-progress are neither directional nor needle-moving. But what they lack in editorial urgency is made up for in an effusive love of color, an obsessive workmanship, and a knack for the kind of camera-ready glamour that elevated Grace Kelly to a screen goddess—all in line with the designer’s ultimate goal of, as he puts it, becoming someone “all women can trust in when they want to be beautiful.” Recent red-carpet arrivals indicate that stars as varied as Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Lady Gaga, Coco Rocha, Ariana Grande, Tina Fey, Shailene Woodley, Sia, and Angela Bassett are believers. As are Neiman Marcus shoppers, who snap up his petal-appliquéd and floral-printed gowns for $3,000-plus.

Kim Kardashian debuts a LIP RING as she returns to public eye after 3 months away

Kim Kardashian has made a stunning return to the public eye – by going all-out to make an entrance at her family’s glamorous Christmas Eve party.

Wearing a plunging gold cocktail dresses and a statement black and gold choker necklace, Kim appeared to be back to her old self as she blew kisses on sister Khloe Kardashian’s Snapchat.

She even wore a lip ring as she showed off her toned body and looked even slimmer after 12 weeks out of the spotlight.

“Look who it is in the house, Mrs West in the building!” exclaimed Khloe as she panned her camera over Kim.

“How to-die – how dope is my f***ing sister? Look at this dress, look at the jewellery. You are a bad-ass bitch, Kim.”

Last night’s party in LA marks a turning point in Kim’s recovery from her armed robbery in Paris back at the start of October. Since then she’s been keeping a low profile, only wearing dark clothes and minimal makeup on the rare occasions she’s left her home.

There was no sign of Kanye West at the swanky do, although their three-year-old daughter North West was there, dressed to the nines in a designer dress.

“Look at Northie in her little Alexander Wang custom cocktail dresses uk, she loves it,” said Kim as she took over Khloe’s Snapchat. “Llook at Koko. Woahoo!”

Kim wasn’t wearing her wedding ring either, despite being seen with it on just last week as she and Kanye went on a date to a restaurant in Santa Monica – a date that was quickly branded ‘fake’ by cynics.

Kim posed with Khloe, Kourtney and little sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, along with Kris and Caitlyn, at the bash, which had performances from John Legend inside an opulently decorated venue.

The Kardashians even welcomed Scott Disick back into the fold, with Kylie captioning a Snapchat of him being hugged by Khloe as “family forever”.

He didn’t appear to be drinking at the event, although it’s not known yet whether he’s given up alcohol in order to deal with his issues around it.

Kylie, wearing a skin-tight black sequinned catsuit, was all over boyfriend Tyga, who wore a fairly unfestive tracksuit to the ‘do.

Earlier, the pair had exchanged Christmas presents – Kylie got a diamond necklace that looked a lot like momager Kris’s… maybe Tyga had found a 2-for-1 deal?

But she seemed delighted with the blingy jewellery, putting it on straightaway and throwing her arms around Tyga as they kissed in front of her family.

It seems that the family might be moving on from their recent troubles, which included Kanye being hospitalised for a suspected breakdown and Kourtney and Scott breaking up – this time ‘for good’.

The One App You Need For Finding The Perfect Bridesmaid Dress

After the general hoopla and giddiness of the recent announcement of my brother-in-law’s engagement (congratulations Henry and Tina), my other sister-in-law, being rather concerned that she is going to be asked to be a bridesmaid, called me in a panic.

It turns out, she’s offered up my services, as Fashion Director and general taste-maker, to help with the task of finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses. My challenge is to make five grown women look good in the same shade and/or style of formal dresses, hopefully in something they *might* consider wearing again. No pressure, then…

Buying your own wedding dress can be stressful enough, so imagine how overwhelming it can feel to find the perfect dress for your entire bridal party. From dealing with various personalities, shapes, sizes and different taste preferences, brides often find the process more difficult than they anticipated.

You want your friends and family to feel happy, comfortable, attractive and as excited about your wedding day as you are, not dreading it because you are making them wear a peach tulle dress inspired by Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind.

Who could forget that scene in 27 Dresses where Katherine Heigl flings open the doors of her overflowing wardrobe to reveal an assortment of bridesmaids dresses made up of sparkly mesh crinolines and badly-fitting satin corsets, each one being more comical and poofier than the last.

Or how about when Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City dressed her bridesmaids in totally different bold colours – incase you don’t remember, black, red and purple, Maybe that’s what sent Mr Big running in the other direction?

Now here’s the dilemma. Do you go for colour or shape? Answer: colour.

I suggest choosing one colour but in different styles, but you’ve got to think seriously about the colour. Blush and taupe maybe the ‘in’ bridesmaid dress colours right now, but they don’t suit every skin tone – they can easily wash some people out.

Top tip: If you’ve got a range of fair, olive and dark skin tones, go for a two-colour palette to please everyone. How about pink and a darker coral?

Bridesmaid dress inspo 1: Jerry Hall’s daughters, Georgia May and Elizabeth Jagger, stole the show at her wedding to Rupert Murdoch when dressed in different shades of blue to compliment the bride’s formal dresses uk.

Troian Bellisario had a ~secret~ wedding dress and it’s even more amazing than the first

Troian Bellisario and her husband Patrick Adams have been married for just over a week now, and we’re still swooning hard over the details of their *perfect* wedding. We’re also still learning things about the wedding that make us love this amazing duo even more — like the fact that Troian actually had a ~secret~ second wedding cocktail dresses, and honestly, it is far superior to her first wedding dress.

Troian Bellisario had a ~secret~ wedding dress and it’s even more amazing than the firstWe love all wedding dresses equally. But this one is SO SPARKLY.

According to the pictures Troian shared to Instagram, this was actually the dress for her post-wedding festivities (obviously, because every wedding needs an after party, and sometimes an after-after party).

If you’re wondering where you can sang this super-sparkly dress yourself, it’s from Maureen Patricia, who designs all sorts of beautiful wedding (and bridesmaid) dresses. However, the one Troian is wearing is a custom dress made just for Troian. BUT, if you ask really nicely for the super-sparkly wedding dress Troian wore, maybe something can be worked out.

Or we can just spend the rest of our lives basking in how *perfect* this one dress is, and it’ll be impossible to ever recreate this sparkly beauty once again.

Troian’s Instagram comment wonders where she can wear the dress next, and honestly, we say EVERYWHERE.

Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump Find Something to Agree On: The Art of Shade

Apologies in advance for the overwhelming presence of Donald Trump this week. The orange glow emitting from my computer screen only caught my attention when I was halfway through this week’s docket and the damage as already done. Still, with just 24 days until what has legitimately become national nightmare is hopefully over, let us try to appreciate the stones being thrown at this man while anyone still cares. (I’m operating from a place of extreme optimism because I have nothing else left.)

In this week’s Shade Court, Hillary finishes strong, we’re still talking about pussies and, hey, remember One Direction?

The Case: On the Friday before the second to last presidential debate, theWashington Post obtained audio of Donald Trump joking with a soon-to-be unemployed Billy Bush about about sexually assaulting women and how he likes to “Grab them by the pussy.”

On the day of the debate, Melania Trump made her entrance wearing a pink silk Gucci “pussy bow” blouse.

The Deliberation: One of the limitations on my work here at Shade Court is that most of the time, I don’t know the subjects of my cases personally. This matters because certain background information can be the key to determining whether or not something is shade.

With well-documented drama between people like, say, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, it’s easier to arrive at certain conclusions about one’s motive or true feelings towards the potential shade recipient.

A situation like the one here with Melania can be much more difficult. At times like these, I have to make certain assumptions. So, let’s just assume that Melania Trump secretly despises her husband which, frankly, isn’t much of a leap. I have to believe that Melania didn’t sign up for this shit. First Lady of the United States? State Dinners? Fact checkers? Nah. Homegirl left the old country with some very specific goals in mind and, to her credit, she met them.

Melania locked down a very wealthy man and thought she was going to chill and anti-age for the rest of her life. She dreamt about going to the Oscars and jetting off to Cannes the next date. She wanted to wear a sexy cheap prom dresses that show leg and cleavage at the same damn time. Melania didn’t want to be out here picking out blouses and long sleeved dresses and making speeches.

Melania had her one child—a son, so you know Donald was happy—and now she was going to enjoy the live she maneuvered for herself. Instead, she’s out here staring about the back of the rat’s nest on her husband’s head on a platform in Iowa wondering how the fuck all this happened.

All that to say, if we assume Melania hates this entire campaign and knows her husband is a predatory sleazebag toad then, yes, it is very easy to read her pussy bow blouse as shade towards her idiot husband.

The only other possible shade reading is that the pussy bow blouse is directed towards—who? Donald Trump’s pussy-grabbing victims? That’s pretty vile and I’m not sure Melania has it in her.

More than likely, this was a carefully planned troll and to her credit, it worked. But because all we’ve got left in this world is Michelle Obama and a little bit of hope, I’m going to believe that yes, Melania trolled us all, but with a wink and a nod. A wink and a nod.

The Case: Rick Caruso is a successful Los Angeles businessman who, among other ventures, owns The Grove, a wonderful outdoor mall in the Los Angeles. TMZ caught up with Rick and asked his thoughts on Donald Trump and, strangely and less relevantly, Manny Pacquiao. During the conversation, he said he’d be happy to ban Donald Trump from The Grove.
