The politics of the fashion industry

Think back on the year in fashion and it probably looks something like this: Beyoncé in Formation or the latex look she served at the Met Gala, everything Kim Kardashian, Rihanna in a Saint Laurent red heart-shaped fox fur coat or Demna Gvasalia’s debut as creative director of Balenciaga.

Consumers are less likely to ponder how the political and economic instability caused by events like Donald Trump’s election victory or the shocking Brexit vote impacted spending patterns, or how a bombing in the Instanbul garment district affected fashion’s supply chain.

pics:celebrity dresses

We’re taught to think fashion and politics look like Michelle Obama and her gold Versace gown at the Obama’s final state dinner, Sophie Trudeau wearing Canadian designer Lucian Matis at the White House, Hillary Clinton in an Armani jacket reportedly worth $16,000 giving a speech on income equality or British prime minister Theresa May taking fire for wearing leather trousers worth a reported $1,650.

We giddily accept clickbait photo galleries-cum-news stories that reinforce a perception that fashion is only ornamental, when in truth it is a $2.4-trillion industry with its own world summits, coalitions, trade agreements and media outlets.

An estimated 57.8 million people are employed in the manufacture of apparel and textiles alone, to say nothing of the people working in the footwear sector or the countless millions employed in the creative, design, shipping, retail and business sectors of what is the second dirtiest industry in the world (only after oil).

The conversation around clothing has to change. We have to start looking at fashion as a powerful economic engine with a vested interest in politics and government.

And, there’s not a lot of time to waste. Because, as of right now, things aren’t going so well.

According to the first State of Fashion report, co-published by Business of Fashion and McKinsey & Company, the world’s economy “has not been this volatile since the depths of the financial crisis of 2009.”

For the past decade, the industry has seen 5.5 per cent annual growth, according to the McKinsey Global Fashion Index, outpacing overall GDP expansion. But by the end of this year, growth is expected to have slowed to between two and 2.5 per cent. Sixty-seven per cent of the industry experts and executives surveyed for State of Fashion said conditions in the industry have worsened in the past year, and only 40 per cent think they’ll get better in 2017.

The top challenge? Dealing with “uncertainty and shifts in the global economy,” the report says. Purchases are emotional decisions and consumers do not spend in politically unstable times. Case in point: data from Slice Intelligence, which monitors electronic receipts of more than four million shoppers, reveals that states where Trump won the popular vote had the highest year-over-year gains in November for revenue from online apparel.

It all points to one cold hard fact: politics will play a big role in what a much-needed recovery for the fashion business looks like, when it happens and what retail looks like on other side.

The sooner we hold our political leaders accountable for how their decisions affect the sector, the better things will be for everyone who depends on it for either a living or, literally, the clothes on their backs.

Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump Find Something to Agree On: The Art of Shade

Apologies in advance for the overwhelming presence of Donald Trump this week. The orange glow emitting from my computer screen only caught my attention when I was halfway through this week’s docket and the damage as already done. Still, with just 24 days until what has legitimately become national nightmare is hopefully over, let us try to appreciate the stones being thrown at this man while anyone still cares. (I’m operating from a place of extreme optimism because I have nothing else left.)

In this week’s Shade Court, Hillary finishes strong, we’re still talking about pussies and, hey, remember One Direction?

The Case: On the Friday before the second to last presidential debate, theWashington Post obtained audio of Donald Trump joking with a soon-to-be unemployed Billy Bush about about sexually assaulting women and how he likes to “Grab them by the pussy.”

On the day of the debate, Melania Trump made her entrance wearing a pink silk Gucci “pussy bow” blouse.

The Deliberation: One of the limitations on my work here at Shade Court is that most of the time, I don’t know the subjects of my cases personally. This matters because certain background information can be the key to determining whether or not something is shade.

With well-documented drama between people like, say, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, it’s easier to arrive at certain conclusions about one’s motive or true feelings towards the potential shade recipient.

A situation like the one here with Melania can be much more difficult. At times like these, I have to make certain assumptions. So, let’s just assume that Melania Trump secretly despises her husband which, frankly, isn’t much of a leap. I have to believe that Melania didn’t sign up for this shit. First Lady of the United States? State Dinners? Fact checkers? Nah. Homegirl left the old country with some very specific goals in mind and, to her credit, she met them.

Melania locked down a very wealthy man and thought she was going to chill and anti-age for the rest of her life. She dreamt about going to the Oscars and jetting off to Cannes the next date. She wanted to wear a sexy cheap prom dresses that show leg and cleavage at the same damn time. Melania didn’t want to be out here picking out blouses and long sleeved dresses and making speeches.

Melania had her one child—a son, so you know Donald was happy—and now she was going to enjoy the live she maneuvered for herself. Instead, she’s out here staring about the back of the rat’s nest on her husband’s head on a platform in Iowa wondering how the fuck all this happened.

All that to say, if we assume Melania hates this entire campaign and knows her husband is a predatory sleazebag toad then, yes, it is very easy to read her pussy bow blouse as shade towards her idiot husband.

The only other possible shade reading is that the pussy bow blouse is directed towards—who? Donald Trump’s pussy-grabbing victims? That’s pretty vile and I’m not sure Melania has it in her.

More than likely, this was a carefully planned troll and to her credit, it worked. But because all we’ve got left in this world is Michelle Obama and a little bit of hope, I’m going to believe that yes, Melania trolled us all, but with a wink and a nod. A wink and a nod.

The Case: Rick Caruso is a successful Los Angeles businessman who, among other ventures, owns The Grove, a wonderful outdoor mall in the Los Angeles. TMZ caught up with Rick and asked his thoughts on Donald Trump and, strangely and less relevantly, Manny Pacquiao. During the conversation, he said he’d be happy to ban Donald Trump from The Grove.

HiMirror analyzes your skin.

photos:prom dresses cheap

Image Credit: HiMirrorHiMirror is introducing a smart beauty mirror today that analyzes your skin.

The company says its mirror is like having a beauty and health consultant in your home every day. The HiMirror recommends what kind of beauty products you should buy based on your skin condition, local weather, and other factors.

The device costs $189 for the standard mirror and $259 for the device with multi-ambiance makeup light. The product is a companion for the Smart Body Scale ($79), which provides similar body and weight analysis and corresponding exercise solutions.

HiMirror is approximately 11 inches x 16.5 inches, and it is humidity-resistant. It can be easily installed in a bathroom, closet, or bedroom walkway, affixing to a wall or a mirror. An integrated high-resolution camera and proprietary technology offer in-depth complexion analysis.

By taking a makeup-free photo, HiMirror detects dark spots, red spots, dark eye circles, wrinkles, pores, fine lines, and other complexion elements. From these, it creates a personalized Skin Index Synthesis report — an evaluation of skin firmness, brightness, texture, clarity, and overall healthiness.

Wi-Fi-connected and Bluetooth-enabled, HiMirror can also display the local weather, sync with Google Calendar, and even play Spotify. With its facial and voice recognition capabilities, HiMirror can also assist multiple family members, tracking their individual skin needs and recommendations.

HiMirror keeps an ongoing log of your skin to track skincare goals and the results of products used. It also allows users to provide feedback on products. Your skincare products can be scanned into the system by bar code, with reminders sent for any product expirations. HiMirror comes with a mobile app, letting you track and tweak your skin care needs on the go.

Accessories being rolled out along with HiMirror include Smart Body Scale, which allows users to measure their weight, body mass index, body fat, water level content, muscle mass, bone weight, resting metabolism, body type, etc.

“We are excited to bring to market the first-ever smart beauty mirror, truly revolutionizing the modern beauty routine,” said Simon Shen, CEO of Taipei-based New Kinpo Group, in a statement. “HiMirror is a technology-driven tool that will become indispensable for consumers — an essential part of their daily beauty routine, helping them evaluate their skin and what works for their individual skincare needs.”

Let your metallic jumper take you from work to the bar this season, and amp up the style with some leather too.

Turtleneck jumpers are perfect to layer under long prom dresses but can make just as much of a style statement with your favourite jeans and boots combo.

Oversized sweaters definitely come with the advice the bigger the better. These boho-chic styles look great with skinny pants, jeans and miniskirts all to help balance out the look.

Otherwise known as the ‘tea-length’, mid-length skirts and dresses are perfect for autumn. Wear them now with bare legs and then add tights and chunky socks as the colder weather comes in.

Between the sleek, figure-hugging pencil-style midi or the full a-line silhouette, there’s a style for everyone when it comes to the mid-length.

These hemlines serve to elongate the figure, flattering most when just above, so that both legs and chest region effectively look longer, giving the look the illusion of being taller.

Ex On The Beach star Jemma Lucy and sibling Lulu sport matching dresses as they dine in Manchester

Her schedule is about to get very hectic, with the new series of Ex On The Beach hitting screens next week.

So, Jemma Lucy took a night off to catch up with her Australia-based sibling over dinner – and prove that distance has not broken their sisterly connection.

http://www.marieprom.co.uk/evening-dressesThe 28-year-old reality star and her sister Lulu stepped out in matching evening dresses in alternate colours, looking closer than ever as they grabbed a bite to eat with their father at the Rosso Restaurant, in Manchester on Tuesday.

The sisters stepped out in the same long-sleeved dress with sequin trim for the feast, with Jemma in the red version and her relative in the navy.

The dresses featured a low-cut neck and mixed-length hem, making it the perfect ensemble to show off multiple of Jemma’s inkings.

The sisters made each outfit their own through their accessories however, with Jemma pairing the scarlet look with some chunky black heeled lace-up boots and a studded black clutch.

Meanwhile her sibling, who is visiting the UK from Sydney, opted for a more classic set of strappy black stiletto heels and some gold drop down earrings.

Sweeping half her hair into a high bouffant and top knot, Sydney-based Lulu showed off her clear, glowing complexion, cutting a completely different look in the frock to her tattooed sister’s edgier vibe.

Not clear whether the choice was accidental or deliberate, the sisters looked closer than ever after their catch up as they smiled at the cameras and went in for a cheeky peck, as they left the restaurant.

Jemma saucily pulled the dress slightly off one shoulder to reveal a flash of skin in her usual scandalous style, a tiny hint of what behaviour is to come during her appearance on the upcoming series of MTV’s Ex On The Beach.

And Jemma looks to be up to her bold, brash ways already seen on series 3 of the show, seemingly eyeing up Geordie Shore lothario Gary ‘Gaz’ Beadle in the new teaser released last week.

Dismissing all other oiled up suitors as she ran up to her new castmates, the 28-year-old inked beauty complimented the hunk: ‘You look good Gaz. Working out?’

Speaking further on her admiration for Charlotte Crosby’s ex, she enthused: ‘Obviously Gaz is looking unreal. Ripped, shredded, oiled up. I don’t really want to be part of Gaz’s checklist.

‘But he got charm and a girl’s got needs,’ she confessed.

But, the reality star and the Geordie lad may be stepping on dangerous territory with their flirty antics, having already been the centre of drama together in the past.

Jemma and Gaz hit headlines earlier this year when they reportedly hooked up during show filming – while Gaz was still believed to be dating his Geordie Shore co-star Charlotte Crosby.

The hookup lead to Jemma receiving a barrage of furious messages from fans, many of whom blamed the indiscretion for Gaz and Charlotte going their separate ways.

The $7 Skin-Care Product Victoria’s Secret Model Elsa Hosk Swears By

You probably know Elsa Hosk as the only Victoria’s Secret model that hasn’t dated Leonardo DiCaprio. Kidding! But you’ve definitely seen the 28-year-old Swedish model and sometimes-face of H&M killing it in lingerie in the way only someone with 10-foot-long legs could.

Now, the blonde is adding fragrance ambassador to her long list of jobs, which, believe it or not also includes pro basketball player. (The more you know!) We sat down with the new face of Crush—Victoria’s Secret’s newest perfume—to chat all things beauty.

How would you describe Crush in three words?

Intriguing, flirty, special—I would [wear] it more for a date night. It’s very intriguing—you want more of it. It’s inspired by a new crush, so it’s intense.

Do you have any tips for getting your perfume to last longer?

Spray it in places where you don’t touch yourself that much.

What is the one beauty product you couldn’t live without?

Probably moisturizer because I have dry skin.

http://www.marieprom.co.uk/evening-dresses

photos:short prom dress uk

Do you have a favorite moisturizer?

I love coconut oil. It’s as simple as that. It’s amazing and also healing, so if you have a breakout or if you have dry hair, it works. It’s an amazing wonder product.

Do you have a favorite drugstore beauty product?

Cetaphil. The cleanser, it’s really good. It’s drugstore, it’s cheap, it’s recommended by my dermatologist, and it’s great. Super gentle.

What beauty tip do you swear by?

Less is more.

What is your go-to nighttime routine?

When I go out, I like to put on a little bit more makeup, so I will do an eyeliner and mascara and keep the lip really simple. Then, it’s really important for me to wash it off at night to let my skin breathe during the night so, you know, do a really nice wash, maybe an exfoliation, and you’re good to go to sleep.

The 30-year-old showed off her toned and tans legs in a thigh skimming pair of striped cotton shorts, tailored to loosely to fit her slim waist.

Paired with a crisp white T-shirt and funky silver backpack, the presenter checked her phone as she walked.

With no need for heels, the number-whizz opted for flat brown sandals buckled around the ankle and toe.

A retro pair of mirrored cream sunglasses finished off her summery look, with her light locks neatly tied up in a bun on the back of her head.

While she kept her make-up natural and light, a touch of pink lipstick gave a boost to her natural glow.

Rachel met her current boyfriend, Russian Pasha Kovalev when they were dancing partners on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2013.

In an interview with the Daily Mail in March, the Essex native admitted she was learning Russian to help her communicate with Pasha’s family better.

Rachel said: ‘His mum doesn’t speak English, and his brother isn’t that confident speaking it – the first time I met them all I couldn’t understand a word. It’s a bit unnerving.

‘But now when he Skypes his mother in Siberia I can say a few words, or work out what they’re talking about.’

Rachel was married to her university sweetheart Jamie Gilbert when she was partnered alongside Pasha on Strictly Come Dancing in late 2013.
