Something old to something new: Sanford woman has mother’s wedding dress repurposed for her own special day

Cassie LaBonville of Sanford always knew she wanted to wear her mother’s wedding cheap prom dresses for her own walk down the aisle.

“As a child, I tried it on so many times. It’s always been what I wanted to do,” she said.

Vintage Wedding DressBut she also knew that the cloud of lace and frills from 1988 would need some changes, though that just raised more questions. Then Cassie saw TLC’s series “Something Borrowed, Something New,” in which brides-to-be choose between a designer gown or their mother’s reimagined and redesigned dress.

“I was like, ‘I have to do this,’” she said. “It seemed like a possibility, because I wasn’t going to wear the poofy sleeves.”

Her opportunity came when her boyfriend Trevor Camanse proposed to her on May 7. She and her mother, Sue LaBonville, visited Midland’s Blue Gardenia Bridal Boutique, which she had heard about through a friend.

Armed with a Pinterest board of photos, they brought LaBonville’s dress to Kelly Wilson at Blue Gardenia. The first step was to determine what the new dress would look like.

“When we came here, Kelly and her daughter pulled all different dresses. I had never tried on another wedding dress before,” Cassie said.

After trying on all different styles, fabrics and silhouettes, they decided to use the skirt from another gown and the bodice of the original. Wilson kept all the lace appliques to use on the veil and bodice, and extra fabric was kept to make future christening gowns for their future children.

LaBonville recalled that within 10 minutes, Wilson and her daughter, Sarah Leonard, were already taking apart her wedding dress.

“It was a little unsettling when it was all laid out here in pieces,” LaBonville said, adding that it wasn’t too difficult because she never was very attached to her dress.

“We were so excited, because we could see that you would love it,” said Wilson.

Indeed, as soon as the trademark ‘80s sleeves were removed, Cassie could begin seeing that her dress was going to be a reality.

Wilson, a retired art teacher from Midland Public Schools, has been remaking vintage wedding dresses for about two years. She gathers gowns from thrift stores and others send her their finds. Her first step is to determine if there is enough usable fabric for a bride’s desired design; sometimes she complements it with other fabric or lace from dresses. While meeting with a bride, she sketches the general idea of the garment, and throughout each appointment continues to ascertain that she and the bride are on the same page with the same goal.

“I think the biggest challenge is interpreting the vision that the bride has and wanting it to be something that they love,” Wilson said.

Wilson, who has also created clothing from scratch, says that repurposing is more fun.

“I get to pull pieces together. It’s kind of like a collage,” she said.

To put the original bodice with the new skirt, Wilson sketched out an idea to bring the two pieces together.

“I thought it would be great to mimic the curve of the bodice,” she said. “I thought, ‘We should open the back up and curve it.’ (Cassie’s dress) was pretty straightforward. They were pretty open to any suggestion I had, which was great.”

Wilson said she has remade about 10 dresses and has seven in the works. The price is based on the amount of work needed, and generally ranges between $500 and $750.

“Every person who gets married wants to be beautiful, whether they’re earning minimum wage and barely making it or whether they have tons of money. I’ve worked with both, and the commonality is that everyone wants to have that feeling and have a beautiful day,” Wilson said. “When I see the people leave, I have a satisfied feeling. It’s really special.”

The trendiness of vintage and bohemian styles lends itself to the popularity of Wilson’s work. She was more than happy to fill the niche for vintage gowns in Midland.

“It’s fun. One of my first people was one of the people I worked with, and she was having a second wedding. She loved the lace of this one dress— it was a long, full ball gown— and I made it into a short lace dress,” Wilson described. “I made a flower girl dress for one of her daughters and the other daughter was kind of tomboyish, so I made lace shorts. It was adorable. I love doing stuff like that, just repurposing and using all the parts.”

On June 9, Cassie was able to try on her reimagined dress for the first time.

“Before this, I didn’t know how it was going to feel. I was a little nervous, but more excited than nervous,” she said. As the appointment ended, she didn’t want to take off the flowing gown.

“The dress has never been more beautiful. I’m just tickled,” said LaBonville as tears came to her eyes. “We have a very special relationship anyway. It’s very special, and I’m glad she had the vision. I did not see a beautiful dress there until Kelly started working her magic and Cassie put it on, and then I could see that it was beautiful.”

LaBonville had even requested her husband take the dress to Goodwill, but instead he had it cleaned and preserved, though the dress didn’t stay in its box once Cassie was old enough to play dress up.

“I thought, ‘Oh, I’m not going to get to ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ but was so much more special to do. It was such an experience, something I’ll never forget,” Cassie said. “It felt like being on “Something Borrowed, Something New.” We came in and it was such an experience.”

Cassie, who plans on preserving the dress in the hopes that her future daughter may wear it, said that her fiancé knows that she is wearing her mother’s remade gown.

“I think he thinks it’s cool. He knows my mom is my best friend,” she said.

Cassie said she sees the fact she is wearing her mother’s wedding cheap prom dresses uk as symbolic of their relationship.

“We have a really special bond,” she said.

“My parents have shown me what a happy marriage looks like, and I hope I have that for the rest of my life,” Cassie said. “It’s just special to wear something that started their happily ever after, and now it will start mine, too.”

Kelly Wilson has closed the storefront for Blue Gardenia Bridal Boutique but will continue to work out of her home as Blue Gardenia Bridal.

Bride and groom take a playful picture at the altar just SECONDS after tying the knot

While some brides like to leave their wedding photos solely in the hands of the photographer, others like to shake it up and try something a little different.

Hayley Jackman and her now husband Scott, 32, from Sydney, decided they would snap a selfie on their big day, shortly after they were pronounced husband and wife.

Bit of fun: 'We had actually completely forgotten about it when we were up there but Scott's brother handed him the phone just after we kissed and we took the picture really spontaneously,' Ms Jackman said

‘We had spoken about the idea before the wedding, it was Scott’s idea originally, and we had never heard of anyone doing it before,’ Ms Jackman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘We had actually completely forgotten about it when we were up there but Scott’s brother handed him the phone just after we kissed and we took the picture really spontaneously.’

Ms Jackman said the candid, playful snap ended up being their favourite from the day.

‘We took two options and they were both really good – you can see all the guests in the background and everyone was laughing so it was great,’ Ms Jackman, an events planner, said.

‘Because of my profession people expected us to do something a little different or unexpected so it was fun to change it up a bit… the priest thought it was great too.’

Ms Jackman said the best part of the selfie was that she had forgotten it was happening, so it was truly an ‘in the moment’ snap.

‘It’s so much better when it’s not posed and you’re not nervous – there was no pressure and it was genuinely just a really fun, awesome moment,’ she said.

The pair’s photographer, Sarah, from Mint Photography, also captured the moment the couple took their selfie.

When it came to the reception, Ms Jackman wanted to keep the guests entertained and enjoy some quirky activities.

‘It’s really important to keep guests engaged throughout the day – there is nothing worse than spending the evening at a cookie cutter event where it blends into all of the other weddings you’ve ever been to,’ Ms Jackman said.

‘You need to set yourself apart as it’s the little personalised touches that people remember, so we made sure that there was always something interesting happening.’

The pair organised for speeches to be staggered throughout the night, live piano activities and games.

‘As our parents and the bridal party were introduced at the reception we had our MC tell everyone a quirky piece of trivia about each person as if they were on a game show,’ she said.

‘I also organised a little questionnaire which was placed on each table setting with a pencil for them to complete throughout the evening with questions like “When do you think Hayley and Scott will have kids?” and “How many kids do you predict they’ll have?”.’

‘Everyone then popped their cards into a piñata which we’ll crack open on our one year anniversary… which is actually next week!’

Traveling In Style: Victoria Beckham Is British Airways’ Best-Dressed Traveler

From the Spice Girls to international fashion designer, Victoria Beckham has been named the Best Dressed Celebrity Traveler by British Airways. British Airways recently released a debut list of 10 of the World’s Best cheap evening dresses uk Travelers, which included a diverse mix of celebrity styles from Amal Clooney, Kendall Jenner, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Heidi Klum, and more. Still, it’s no surprise Victoria Beckham’s sophisticated style took the number one spot for a well-deserved honor.

Although Victoria’s personal style has evolved over the years, her airport style has consistently impressed even the most frequent of travelers. “Victoria Beckham always gets it right when flying and it’s so impressive,” says Elizabeth Saltzman, British Airways’ Style Ambassador. “Usually there is a menswear element to her travel wardrobe, it is chic and sophisticated but still classic and comfortable.” Here are 5 of Victoria Beckham’s most stylish airport looks with tips for traveling in style from Elizabeth Saltzman.

1. Incognito. Sunglasses are the perfect accessory for hiding tiresome travel eyes.

“Sunglasses are a great way to accessorize an outfit while traveling. I firmly believe in my Tom Ford glasses, as well as a solid pair of Ray Bans. It’s the ultimate jet-setter accessory.”

2. Pack thoughtfully. Bring items that can be mixed, matched, and paired to create different looks!

“If possible I prefer a carry-on only unless you are going for more than four days. Make your outfits versatile so you can use things more than once. Plan ahead, for instance if you pack a navy blue tuxedo as an outfit to wear in the evening, you can also use the tuxedo jacket with your jeans, white shirt and flats for the day. Brooks Brother, J Crew , Saint Laurent and Tom Ford tuxedos are my favorites! A small amount of effort when packing can help you get really organized.”

3. Hair up. A long day of traveling calls for a chic up-do.

”I like to tie my hair up on a plane. I think it gets less static and less dirty that way, and if I twist it up into a bun I can let it out when I deplane. Magic: it’s like an instant blow-dry effect. If you have to go straight to a meeting I use Frederic Fekkai Dry Shampoo to quickly freshen my hair.”

4. Minimal Accessories. Victoria didn’t bother with a single piece of jewelry for this look — and she still looks fabulous!

“Wear minimal jewelry when traveling and pack statement pieces. I love jewelry, so I always have a small Smythson travel case with me where I keep my accessories.”

5. Layers, layers, layers. Be sure to bring more than enough layers to make it through the flight. The extra pieces can double as pillows or blankets!

“As any sports person knows layering is essential. I consider traveling a sport. Every person is different, layers are easy for traveling. You can always add one when you are cold or take one off if you get too warm. I always have a navy blue Celine cardigan in my bag when traveling.”

How secondhand shopping makes the world a better place

Elizabeth ClineHere are the beginning and end stages of a fast-fashion addict’s recovery: When Elizabeth Cline started writing Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, her 2012 investigation of the fashion industry, she was wearing a sweatshirt from Forever 21 that cost $12.95, a $28 faux leather jacket from T.J. Maxx, a $16 T-shirt from Urban Outfitters, a $5 miniskirt from H&M, and a $14 pair of tights from American Apparel. Last week, when we talked on the phone in anticipation of her appearance at the Chicago Humanities Festival, she was wearing vintage black-leather shorts, a sweatshirt her boyfriend had found in a thrift shop, and a pair of pointy leather boots she bought in a secondhand market in Nairobi, Kenya, this past January, when she was there filming a documentary based on the book.

“Nairobi has the best secondhand shopping in the world,” she says. Most of the goods in the markets come from American donations; charities such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army only manage to resell about 20 percent of the goods they collect and then ship the remainder overseas. The global secondhand market, Cline says, generates about $800 million in revenue every year.

Shoppers in Nairobi are just as obsessed as Americans with fashion and trends, Cline says, especially denim. Sellers scrub and reshape old clothes to make them look new again. But there’s also a rich culture there of remaking and repurposing clothes, like taking a pair of size-XXL men’s cocktail dresses pants and turning them into a skirt.

Here in the U.S., disposable clothing is still as much of a problem as it was when Cline published Overdressed four years ago. Fashion was recently named the second-most polluting industry after oil. In Bangladesh, the country that’s vying to become the go-to place for production of fast fashion now that Chinese workers have started to demand higher wages, the unregulated leather industry has been dumping toxic chemicals and wastewater into the rivers, where it mingles with the drinking water. Workers are still disgustingly underpaid. The garment industry has seen three of the four most deadly accidents in its history. By 2020, Cline estimates, China and India, with their billion-plus populations, will overtake the United States as the leading consumers of fast fashion. She also surmises that H&M continues to open a store somewhere in the world nearly every day.

But Cline has also noticed some more positive developments in the past three or four years, notably a shift in the conversation around clothing and the emergence of a new “slow fashion” movement whose proponents are demanding more transparency about where their clothes come from. Online companies like Zady, Cuyana, and Everlane make a point of allowing shoppers to read about the farms where their cotton is grown or where the sheep and alpacas (who provide their wool) are raised; through videos, customers can see the people who sew their shirts and dresses. These clothes cost more—a basic T-shirt from Zady costs $36, while a similar one from H&M is $5.99—but that, says Cline, is also part of the point.

“There’s this idea that if you sell higher-quality clothes,” Cline explains, “people will buy fewer, better things. Online retailers offer luxury-quality products at a more reasonable price, from $40 to $200 or $300.”

This is, Cline acknowledges, still beyond the range of many people. But she also notes that before the 1990s and the advent of Old Navy, there was no equivalent to today’s $4.99 dress. If you adjust prices for inflation, many Americans were paying the same amount for regular middle-market clothes as people today are paying for the ethically made garments; the only difference is that past wardrobes were considerably smaller. Also, at least until the 70s, most women knew how to sew well enough to alter poorly fitting pieces or transform them into something they liked better, much like the secondhand-clothing dealers in Nairobi.

“The reality of bringing home a piece of clothing you didn’t like is a phenomenon of fast fashion,” says Cline. “People shop on impulse.”

Cline herself used to be among the hordes of shoppers who were easily seduced by $7 pairs of shoes and two-for-one sales. These days, she says, she hunts for new clothes with more intent. “I don’t shop in the sense that I walk into a store without an idea of what I’m looking for,” she says. “I think about what I need before I look.”

She’s also become much savvier about buying clothes secondhand. The Internet has transformed that market as well. You no longer need to live near a great vintage store to get great vintage clothes—instead you can just log onto Thredup or Ebay. “Using technology and the sharing economy,” says Cline, “you can get exactly what you want.”

The slow fashion movement advocates for the repair and restoration of old clothes, either at home or with the assistance of cobblers and tailors. In one chapter of Overcocktail dresses uk, Cline writes about how she bought a sewing machine and took lessons in order to design her own clothes. This experiment was more difficult than she’d anticipated, but it did teach her what good quality looks like. “I don’t shop just on style anymore,” she says. “It’s part of a larger equation.”

Still, Cline acknowledges that problems with the fashion industry are too large to be fixed simply by alterations in consumer behavior. “It’s a systemic problem,” she says. “There needs to be massive policy and legislative change. The political climate in the United States, especially with the primaries, has made people realize what they can expect of government. We’ve expected corporations to police themselves and be good voluntarily, but there need to be rules. We can’t leave [regulating the industry] up to corporations.”

The International Labor Rights Forum has organized a Global Day of Action on May 3 at H&M stores worldwide to coincide with the retailer’s annual meeting in Solna, Sweden. This is all, Cline hopes, part of a larger fashion revolution that will repair the damage done by 20 years of fast fashion. It’s a very simple idea, she says: “Buy better, buy less.”

High school students protesting “sexist” dress code

Pupils of the Stanislas College in Delft are attending school on Tuesday in crop-tops and hot-pants in protest against the new prom dresses 2016 code. The school’s director sent a letter to parents stating that students and staff members are not allowed to wear “short shorts/skirts and short shirts”.

Hotpants and crop-top (Photo: CSD2006/Wikimedia Commons)“I want to show that they can not send us home because of our clothes”, an 18-year-old pupil said to the Telegraaf. “Clothing is for girls in high school a way to express themselves. It enables them to differentiate themselves from the group. Almost all the girls at school try to look alike. Being different is scary and I don’t think that the small group of girls who can put their insecurity aside and dare t pull those cute shorts out of the closet should be hampered by restrictions.”

The revealing clothing in summer fashion is sometimes a struggle at many schools, according to a survey done by newspaper AD. Arnoud Kuijpers, teacher at Candea College, can see that some summer fashions can be considered distracting, but feels that he can’t say anything about it. “That might seem sexist”, he said to the newspaper. “I ask a female colleague to do so if it really can not be tolerated.”

“If the school starts to too much resemble a beach in Scheveningen, I intervene”, Adam van Heest, rector of the Prince Maurits school group in Middelharnis. “The school is a workplace, so you do not come in beach attire. If you’re with your employer soon, you’ll also have to appear in appropriate clothing.”

Marcel van Loo, rector of the OMO School Group in Bergen op Zoom, also admits to having to address a few girls every summer on their clothing. “If large parts are exposed, we will talk. Because it is distracting and makes some teachers feel downright uncomfortable.”

Poppy appeal! Kate dons a £745 red Beulah dress featuring Bhutan’s national flower in a special tribute to country at glittering reception

The Duchess of Cambridge looked radiant in red as she wore a £745 Beulah featuring Bhutan’s national flower – the poppy – in a special tribute to the country.

Beulah is one of Kate’s favourite fashion brands and is run by Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs, an old friend of the Duchess.

The showstopper full-length backless prom dresses uk – called ‘Juliet’ – was a far cry from the casual look she sported earlier in the day for a three-hour hike up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery perched on a Bhutan clifftop.

The Royal tour of India and Bhutan is almost over and we’re definitely going to miss our daily dose of the Duchess of Cambridge’s style. With up to three outfits per day, we’ve not been short of wardrobe inspiration over the last week!

From hiking gear to glamorous gowns, there’s been something to suit everyone. And from Accessorize to Alexander McQueen, Kate has covered all budgets too. But the red dress she wore to a reception for British nationals really is the icing on the cake.

It’s by Beulah London, another of her favorite labels and we love the bright red shade and pretty poppy print. The long sleeves, silk material and maxi length means it’s perfectly appropriate for the occasion, particularly since the blue poppy is the national flower of Bhutan. It’s blooming beautiful!

It’s from the SS15 collection, but the good news is you can get your hands on it by clicking the link (right). Or recreate Kate’s crimson look with the help of our edit below. This Michael Kors Collection dress is dreamy, or if you’re trying to keep costs down, this floral frock from Ganni will do the trick.

Beulah was set up by Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs, an old acquaintance of the Duchess, who is married to her former boyfriend Rupert Finch.

Her father, the Marquess of Reading, is also close to Prince Charles and as a result, Lady Natasha has known Prince William since she was a little girl.

At the reception this evening, which celebrated Britain’s relationship with Bhutan, William and Kate met Britons living in the mountain kingdom.

William described being in the cockpit of the plane landing in Bhutan as ‘terrifying’ while speaking to helicopter pilot Nic Suddards, 56, from Yorkshire.

Mr Suddards moved to Bhutan in December to fly their national helicopter, making emergency rescues and transporting diplomats.

He said afterwards: ‘He said it (being in the cockpit) was terrifying. There is a house on the approach which is known as Mr Smith’s house and you miss it by metres.

‘The pilot was showing him Mr Smith’s house and he said ‘don’t look at that, concentrate on the runway!”’

Mr Suddards had brought his helicopter to the airport when the royal plane landed but he didn’t get the chance to show the royals around as they travelled by car to their hotel instead.

He said: ‘I told him that he missed an opportunity because the dual controls were in the aircraft specially for him in the airport and he could have flown it back to Thimphu.’

When asked how William felt about that, he replied: ‘Devastated. He said he would have loved to have flown it. I asked him to come and do some volunteer work here because we do a lot of medical evacuations. He said he would love to so we’ll send him an official invitation.’

Kate spoke to Pio Smith, 39, from Newry, Northern Ireland who has lived in Bhutan since last June when his wife moved to the country for a job with the UN.

He said about Kate: ‘She was really interested in hearing about what it was like to raise a family here.’

William and Kate also spoke to Britons Carolyn Ishering, 75, from North Wales and Louise Dorji, 81, from York, who have both been living in Bhutan since 1966.

Ms Ishering said: ‘It was a great honour to meet them, very exciting. She is everything that I thought she was…so elegant, warm and friendly.

‘I told him (William) that I had a connection because my sister had actually been second chef to Princess Margaret in Kensington Palace for a number of years and I was retelling a story about how the lifts got stuck in the palace when I went up to her flat.

‘He said “yes, it does get stuck.’”

Earlier in the day, William and Kate climbed arm-in-arm to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, some 10,000 feet above sea level.

While the prince was seen wiping sweat from his brow, his wife appeared unfazed by the climb and simply pushed her hair back from her face with her sunglasses.

The prince, dressed in chinos, a shirt and walking boots, looked more flushed than his wife – who donned £475 Penelope Chilvers boots and a £495 Nubuck shoot waistcoat over a white Jaeger linen blouse costing £89.

At the end of the walk, Kate told the press pack she was missing George and Charlotte ‘massively’, adding ‘we’re looking forward to seeing them…they’re in good hands.’

She added that they had been able to speak with them ‘many times’ over the week.

The couple will conclude their tour tomorrow with a romantic visit to the Taj Mahal, the marble mausoleum known as a monument to love.

It will mark 24 years since Diana was famously pictured sitting by herself in front of the 17th century monument as her marriage to Prince Charles unravelled. Their separation was announced just months later.

One strap of Charlize’s pencil dress sat off-the-shoulder and a jewel embellished sheer panel added a little glitz.

On closer inspection the encrustations on the delicate fabric were shaped into insects such as ladybirds and bees.

It was the second creepy-crawly inspired ensemble the star sported in the past week.

At Saturday night’s MTV Movie Awards Charlize wore a black lace dress with sequinned butterflies adorning her neckline.

Joining the actress on the red carpet was her co-star Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky.

Chris, 32, looked handsome in a grey suit and tie.
