“Get Me Gladys!” – How L.A.’s Best-Dressed

You ever lose a case?” Those were the words Gladys Towles Root heard as she stared at her first client through prison bars. Two days before, they had met in her law offices, which were freshly painted and furnished in purple. There, she and Louis Osuna, a Filipino immigrant, had discussed American divorce proceedings. But that was two days ago. Now her client’s wife was dead.

“You went about it the hard way. It’s murder now. Murder, you know, can cost you your life.”

“Not if you good lady lawyer. You ever lose a case?”

“No,” Gladys answered. She’d never tried one, after all.

“Good. I tell all prisoners in jail about you.”[1]

While some may object to her characterization, that, verbatim, was how Root recalled the meeting that launched her 53-year legal career – one remarkable in its empathy for the underprivileged.

At trial, Osuna was ordered to serve only ten months for the lesser charge of manslaughter. Within his first month in prison, fifteen of his fellow inmates put Root on retainer.

Root, a young woman who first appeared in the Los Angeles society pages at age ten, had graduated from USC law school in 1929, the year before she took on Osuna’s case. She had studied law at the encouragement of her father, but upon graduation Root discovered most law firms unfriendly to female attorneys. In fact, not long before Root started her studies the Los Angeles Bar Association had decided to deny women membership on the grounds that “even though they had diplomas and certificates, they could never be ‘full-fledged lawyers.’”

Following six months of searching for work with no luck, she opened her own practice. The success of her first case led Root to take on more and more people other lawyers had turned away – either because their cases were unsavory or because they came from the lower rungs of the social ladder. She began to make a living defending the defenseless. Soon, a phrase began echoing through the streets of Los Angeles. Upon an arrest, men and women were known to shout, “Get me Gladys!”

In many states, including California, lawyers were banned from traditional advertising methods until 1977. So how did Root get her message out? She was known for her sensational courtroom attire. A fellow attorney remembered that in the trial of Frank Sinatra Jr.’s kidnappers, “she arrived one day wearing a low-cut fuchsia sheath, fuchsia shoes, a fuchsia hat and hair dyed to match. The whole scheme changed to a deep purple – a favorite color – the next day. She conceded later that the quick-change artistry on her hair was achieved with such aids as Easter egg dye and Mercurochrome,”[2] a bright green antiseptic. Enormous hats and jewelry were a constant. Apart from being great advertising, her costumes were also a trial tactic – they took the jury’s attention off the heinous crimes of which the defendants were often accused. It is more difficult to consider the realities of rape and murder when confronted with peacock feathers and egg-sized earrings.

And indeed, her tactic worked. Although many of Root’s clients were convicted, their sentences were largely reduced or suspended – a success in the eyes of many criminal defense attorneys. Root was something of a machine, handling 1,600 cases per year and averaging 75 court appearances per month. She pioneered new methods of collecting evidence, becoming one of the first prominent attorneys in Los Angeles to rely on private investigators for evidence. In one instance she consulted an astrologer. Her performative style also helped win cases. Once Root even had a grandfather clock wheeled into the courtroom, so the jury could hear the hypnotic tick and how it had persuaded her unstable client to hear the words, “Kill…Kill…Kill!”

Root’s annual gross income ran into the high six-figures by 1964. Her clients paid large fees if they could afford it. If they could not, her services were secured with deeds on their property, with livestock, and even, on one occasion, with hot goods from the very burglary over which the case was being heard.

Root’s proudest cases, in her own words, were those which helped her clients overcome miscegenation laws. She represented at least two white/Filipino couples who wanted to get married. The then-standing California law, written in 1905, the same year Root was born, read “All marriages of white persons with Negroes, Mongolians, or mulattoes are illegal and void.” Root won both cases, but she did so by arguing about the specific bloodlines of each client, rather than challenging the law itself. In doing so she won the case for her clients but lost the opportunity for the ruling to hold lasting legal precedent.

Root, however, was less concerned with legal precedent than she was with the lives her clients would lead. She worked in criminal law until old age, and would not give it up, “one-hundred percent because I love people. They are screwy and heart-rending. I always try to help, but I can’t always do much.”[3] Try she did, making a half-century-long legal career by taking the side of those with nowhere left to turn. Further reflecting on her life, Root remembered the words of her father, all those years ago, encouraging her towards her vocation. “Gladys, you ought to be on stage – not the theater, but life’s real stage: the courtroom.”[4] In 1982 she made her exit from life’s stage on the courtroom floor. Defending two brothers in Pomona accused of sodomy and rape, she succumbed to a heart attack. She was wearing an entirely gold outfit.

Spurs eclipse ’95-96 Bulls for best home start in NBA history

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs set the NBA record with their 38th straight home victory to open the season and matched the highest win total in franchise history.

And none of them cared.

Manu Ginobili scored 20 points and the Spurs beat the injury-depleted New Orleans Pelicans 100-92 on Wednesday night to win their 47th straight home game overall dating to last season.

“It doesn’t mean anything,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “Absolutely nothing. Maybe a cup of coffee, maybe.”

That’s more than the rest of the Spurs would expect.

“It doesn’t matter to me,” San Antonio point guard Tony Parker said. “No. Championship (is all that matters).”

San Antonio topped the 37-0 start by the Chicago Bulls during their record 72-victory season in 1995-96. Golden State (67-7) has an existing 36-game home winning streak to open the season, giving the Warriors a chance to end up with the record or match it.

The Warriors and Spurs play twice in the coming two weeks, facing off on each other’s home court with their home streaks possibly on the line.

The Spurs are 63-12, matching the franchise record for victories set in 2005-06.

“If you’re going to go undefeated at home, you’ve got to be a team that has championship potential,” New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said. “Obviously, (the Spurs) have championship potential. They’ve proven that over the last 15 years.”

Greenwich Boat Show just keeps growing

Following the 2008 economic recession, few people were in the market for a boat — let alone a second or third boat — even in Greenwich, where a certain level of affluence was never lost.

So, rather than continue competing for business that didn’t exist, area boat dealers banded together to form the Greenwich Boat Show. Eight years later, the show has more than doubled in size as the recreational boating industry has recovered and the economy improved.

“It started out really local because so many businesses were affected by the financial crisis,” said Karen Piscitelli, director of marketing for the Greenwich Boat Show. “They came together and that’s how the boat show started. Since then it’s still the original group and it just keeps growing.”

Set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine, at the Greenwich Water Club, the eighth annual Greenwich Boat Show will welcome 19 regional boat dealers, as well as one land dealer — Manhattan Motor Cars, Lamborghini.

The boat show is free and open to the public, and will once again offer the show’s signature free sea trials as the only in-water boat show in the area. Piscitelli said the sea trials (which are just like test driving a car) were a part of the original boat show, and have been a key component to the show’s ongoing popularity and success. The trials give prospective boat buyers the opportunity to test out multiple boats on the open waters of Long Island Sound — and with 110 boats representing 43 brands, they have a lot to choose from. Featured boats range from fishing vessels to luxury yachts.

For more information on the Greenwich Boat Show, visit www.greenwichboatshow.com, or contact Karen Piscitelli at 203-661-4033 or kpiscitelli@greenwichwaterclub.com.“Going back to the original roots of the show, the whole idea was you take the boats head to head and test drive them,” Piscitelli said. “This is the only show where we encourage you to test drive multiple boats … and they like to drive boats hard. You actually want to be able to drive it in the worst of circumstances; if it’s rainy and it’s windy you want to know how it handles before you buy it.”

Piscitelli said the show does take place earlier than most other boat shows due to the sea trials, which wouldn’t be possible once the recreational boating season gets started in April.

“We actually have it so early that you can actually have a sea trial, get a good deal, get that boat show price and get it in time to enjoy it for the season,” Piscitelli said. “With the later shows, you often won’t even get it until the next season.”

Depending on the weather, Piscitelli said the show is expected to draw anywhere from 800 to 1,400 attendees, including serious boat enthusiasts and first-time buyers alike. The not-for-profit show is also one of the most affordable in the country for boat dealers, costing just $3,500 for registration compared to more than $30,000 for bigger shows. As a result of the laid-back nature and affordability of the event, Piscitelli said she’s already started a waiting list for dealers looking to get into the 2017 show.

“It just keeps getting bigger, which is a really good thing,” Piscitelli said. “I’ve been here all eight years, and it’s nice to be a part of something that’s grown so much.”

Would You Wear a Denim Wedding Dress?

Normally, wedding gowns are made with chiffon, tulle, silk, and lace. In addition to being beautiful, the delicate fabrics are generally lightweight and fluid, which lend well to walking down an aisle, kissing, and dancing. But Diesel has offered untraditional brides an alternative: denim.

For the opening of two new stores in Tokyo, Japan, designer Nicola Formichetti created white denim dresses and jean tuxedos for a fake marriage between models. But these creations are nothing like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’ iconic blue jean red carpet styles. Instead, the outfits are actually quite elegant, albeit a little on the heavy side.

One of the looks has been crafted in a completely conventional silhouette — strapless with a tight bodice billowing out at the waist into a voluminous skirt — despite its uncommon material. The piece, paired with a matching fascinator, is embellished with 3D-printed flowers in white and light blue denim.

A denim wedding dress would certainly be for the trend-bucking bride. But those wanting even more avant-garde, Diesel also produced a mini denim dress.

You Are As Powerful As What You Know: Katrina Kaif At Women Of Worth Awards

NEW DELHI: It is knowledge that is the source of power, actor Katrina Kaif said at theNDTV-L’Oreal’s Women of Worth Awards on Monday evening.

“You are as powerful as what you know. Education and knowledge is where we get our power from… Education is the way towards gender equality, to change people’s mindsets,” said Ms Kaif, who was invited to distribute the award for education, titled “In a class of their own”.

Pointing out that this category of education was “personal to her”, Ms Kaif said, “My mom has worked in a charitable organisation to educate kids. I understand the work that goes in without any recognition.”

People working in this field are “giving back love to a world where fear is bigger than love,” she added.

The award went to Safeena Husain, the Founder and CEO of non-profit Educate Girls. Set up in 2007, the NGO has been tackling the root cause of gender inequality in India’s education system pushing to enroll more girls, improving school infrastructure and preventing drop-outs.

Asked what led her to work in this field, Ms Husain said, “India has the highest number child brides… There was a lack of scalable solutions to girls’ education.”

In the circumstances, it is absolutely necessary to “change minds” and for that “scale was absolutely necessary,” she added.

Ms Husain was among the eight women to be presented with the NDTV-L’Oreal’s Women of Worth awards on Monday.

ARTICLE HISTORYPRINTSHAREWASHINGTON – Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Sunday doubled down on his criticism of NATO, a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy for decades, and called for the alliance’s overhaul days before world leaders convene in Washington.

President Barack Obama will host the Nuclear Security Summit on Thursday and Friday with 56 delegations in attendance. While preventing nuclear terrorism will headline the discussions, Trump’s views could be a topic as well, particularly behind the scenes.

In another sharp departure from historic U.S. policy, Trump said in an interview published on Sunday by The New York Times that he would consider letting Japan and South Korea build their own nuclear weapons, rather than rely on America for protection against North Korea and China.

The billionaire businessman, vying to win his party’s nomination for the Nov. 8 presidential election, also said he might halt U.S. purchases of oil from Saudi Arabia and other Arab allies unless they commit ground troops to fight Islamic State or pay the United States to do so.

“NATO is obsolete,” Trump said on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

The 28-country North Atlantic Treaty Organization was set up in a different era, Trump said, when the main threat to the West was the Soviet Union. It is ill-suited to fighting terrorism and costs the United States too much, he added.

“We should readjust NATO … it can be trimmed up and it can be, uh, it can be reconfigured and you can call it NATO, but it’s going to be changed,” he said.

On March 21, Trump said the United States should slash its financial support for NATO, which was formed in 1949 after World War II and became a bulwark against Soviet expansionism.

Russia will not attend the upcoming nuclear summit, but China’s President Xi Jinping will.

Obama said the United States will review international efforts to combat Islamic State militants during the summit in the wake of the Brussels attacks.

Trump’s chief rival for the Republican nomination, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called the real estate mogul’s views on NATO “catastrophically foolish.” Speaking on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, Cruz said Trump is “out of his depth.”

“Abandoning Europe, withdrawing from the most successful military alliance of modern times, it makes no sense at all,” Cruz said. “It would hand a massive victory to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, a massive victory to ISIS,” the militant group also known as Islamic State.

Cruz said if he were elected president, his approach to Islamic State would be to “carpet bomb them into oblivion.”

Ways to Make Your Next Party Bigger, Fatter and Greeker

Big Fat Greekimage:mermaid wedding dresses

Celebrity wedding planner Sofia Crokos grew up in a “very intense” Greek family, so she’s well-acquainted with big, fat Greek celebrations.

“The cooking part, the dressing of the table part, the setting up and planning it all — it was sort of instilled in me from a young age,” Crokos tells PEOPLE. “I hate to say this, but we were making love to the food. We were so intensely involved. There was like 20 bosses in the kitchen versus one — that’s very Greek.”

After working in fashion for several years, Crokos returned to her passion: executing weddings — for stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Marc Anthony — parties and gatherings that incorporated the vitality of Greek celebrations. (She eagerly awaits the premiere of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, on March 25th.)

“Growing up, even when we were not hungry, food was always pushed our way,” she says. “Someone will say, ‘What do you mean you don’t eat meat? Why don’t you try it?’ My sister is vegetarian, and even my cousins are like, ‘Ok, I just made it with chicken stock.’”

Big Fat Greekimage:backless wedding dresses

Christian OthCrokos shares five tips for making your wedding — or party! no pressure! — a little Greeker and a little fatter.

1. First and foremost: Go all out with the Greek food.

“From the preparation to gathering around the table to eat, food is a huge part of the Greek culture. Start off your meal with some classic nibbles, including stuffed grape leaves, olives, olive oil, and dips — such as tzatziki, tarama, and melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant dip). Include delicious and traditional Greek delicacies for the main course such as grilled fresh fish and horta (collard greens) or roasted lamb with lemon oregano potatoes. And, of course, don’t forget to conclude the meal with some sweet baklava and Mastiha ice cream!”

RELATED: See Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg’s Stunning Floral Wedding Cake

“If you’re planning a wedding, individualize the experience by incorporating customary dishes and recipes from the Greek island that the bride and groom’s families are from. (Example: if the bride’s family is from Santorini, make sure to serve fava and tomatokeftedes, which are tomato balls). Also, keep in mind that many Greek foods have ancient significance in weddings — such as koufetta (Jordan almonds), which symbolize health and wealth; honey, which symbolizes sweetness and the endurance of a marriage; and rosemary, which symbolizes fidelity, love and abiding friendship — so make sure to include these, too!”

2. Crank some traditional music.

“Walk down the aisle or let guests mingle at cocktail hour to the beautiful melodies of the Greek bouzouki. Later in the night, turn up the volume and get the dancing started with some classic Greek tunes, including the infamous Kalamatianos or ‘Zorbas dance.’ Before you know it, your guests will have their hands in the air, shouting out ‘Opa!’”

Kate Upton Highlights The Ridiculous Contrast Of Fashion Shoots Vs. Real Life

image:Yellow Bridesmaid Dresses

PHOTO: BFA/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK.Fashion editorials are usually full-on aspirational, featuring elaborately made-up (or completely bare-faced and pared-down) models wearing fabulous clothes against a stunning backdrop, often doing bizarre things. So, when shoots depict very mundane activities, it can seem a little…off. Kate Upton is making it clear that she fully sees the absurdity of these situations.

Upton has (unofficially) started a series on her Instagram she calls “high fashion v. reality,” as Mic pointed out. Pulling from a recent V Magazine spread shot by Sebastian Faena, the model re-creates the real-life scenarios she enacted on set, like lounging in bed with her dog and cleaning her house. So far, Upton has only posted three images following this theme — but they on point.

First, there’s a shot of her lounging around an incredibly tidy room in an Armani and Burberry ensemble. As one does, you might think. Well, Upton juxtaposes the color-coordinated image with a more realistic shot of how exactly she gets a room that clean (with a solid vacuum and some elbow grease), while wearing sneakers with the laces untied.

Montana style’: Schools across state pitch in for Havre 14-month-old

Hats at Newman schoolFundraising efforts aren’t uncommon in local schools. But rarely does a large swath of the state band together behind one family.

Almost 70 schools across Montana, including a handful in the Billings area, are raising money for the family of Finnley Foster, 14-month-old who has a rare immune system condition.

Her story came to the attention of Conrad High School Principal Ken Larson, who was an acquaintance of her father, Pat Foster. Foster lives in Havre with girlfriend Katie Whitmore, Finnley’s mother, and works as a basketball referee. Larson ran into him at a Class B divisional tournament in Malta.

“It just planted a seed there,” Larson said. “This is a chance for schools to help.”

He emailed superintendents and principals across the state.

“Every corner of the state was saying, we’re in,” Larson said.

Finnley Foster began having health problems when she was a few months old; as they compounded, doctors failed to discover a root cause. Eventually she was diagnosed with severe combined immunodeficiency, but further testing is still needed to pin down which of several types of the condition she has.

“Right now she basically doesn’t have any immunity,” said Pat Foster. The family has its third trip to Seattle planned in May, hoping to get some firm answers.

So far, about $9,000 has been raised to help the family with medical and travel costs, Larson said, with more schools slated to send money in.

Several schools in Billings and Lockwood have adopted Larson’s original fundraising idea, hat day. Students pay a dollar to wear a hat on Friday, and additional donations can be chipped in.

Newman and Ponderosa elementary schools in particular have embraced the idea, challenging each other to raise more money. On Friday, Ponderosa won, raising more than $300, and sent Newman a box of tissues for good measure.

But that didn’t dampen Newman students’ enthusiasm.

“It’s really exciting to me that we’re going to help this family with their daughter,” said fourth-grader Emilee Septer, who was sporting a pink sun hat.

Fifth-grader Armand Fair explained severe combined immunodeficiency, a serious topic that contrasted with his propeller-topped hat.

“It feels good to wear a hat too,” he said.

Foster expressed his gratitude during a phone interview where Finnley could be heard in the background.

“It’s very humbling, very overwhelming,” Foster said of the donations. “To me, it just the Montana style. Somebody’s in need, everybody just jumps in and helps out.”
