The fashion world is keeping stats on runway diversity, but what’s the real goal?

People want a lot from fashion models these days. Possibly too much.

During the recent fall 2016 shows, critics wanted models that were plus-size, old, transgender, Latina, black, Asian, Body Mass Index-normal, beautiful, eccentric-looking — and smiling. (Oh-by-God did men especially want them smiling because a model who is not smiling is, by default, glaring or angry or maybe just too focused, and how dare these young women strutting about in velvet puffer coats and oversized blazers suggest they might have a serious thought floating around in their head.)

We’re hearing these demands because fashion has ceased being a niche interest and is now a fascination for a wide swath of the population. Fashion is popular culture and big business. The expansion of fashion’s audience is good for the industry and good for the social conversation. People should be more invested in the global production of frocks; it impacts us all. And models are the public face — or body — of that industry. While designers are increasingly becoming celebrities in their own right, it’s still mostly the models who are responsible for embodying the anonymous ideal of the brand — its notion of beauty and desirability. It’s the models who are expected to connect to consumers and welcome them into the fashion fold.

Diversity should be part of that equation. But how much? And what sort?

In the last few years, the conversation about diversity has focused on race. Influential members of the fashion industry, from activist Bethann Hardison to models Naomi Campbell and Iman, have spoken up about why racial diversity matters. Part of their activism included publicly chastising brands that mount runway shows without casting models of color. That public shaming awakened a lot of designers to their subconscious prejudices, and they changed their ways.

And now, that tough love has progressed to a regular statistical analysis.

According to the The Fashion Spot, nearly 32 percent of the models on the fall 2016 runways in New York were women of color. It has been a slow slog to reach this point; in the mid-1990s, the percentage was closer to zero. But this website and others have also taken to counting the number of plus-size models, transgender models and those who are deemed “aged.” What other categories shall we add: lesbian, disabled, Native American, and so on? After all, they are part of the great consumer melting pot, too.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were reportedly spotted hanging out with Robert Downey Jr. over the weekend for a children’s party, and the couple spent quality time with Bloom’s five-year old son Flynn.

Rumors have been flying for months now that the duo are an item, but neither will comment on whether or not they’re seeing each other romantically. However, they’ve been spotted vacationing together in Hawaii and, according to the Irish Independent, he’s even talked about meeting her parents. However, one source says that Bloom has been nervous about making a good impression on Katy’s family, especially since she’s reportedly said that her parents were overjoyed about her divorce from comedian Russell Brand.

“Orlando doesn’t seem that keen on meeting Katy’s mum and Dad. Katy’s parents are a huge part of her life, and it’s causing tension because she can’t understand why it’s a problem. Orlando might seem confident on the surface, but he’s terrified of making a bad impression,” a source said.

The couple reportedly met back in January at a Golden Globes afterparty, where they were spotted chatting the night away, and have been seen out and about several times since then, including an Adele concert and a one-man play in L.A.

“He would lean in to whisper into her ear and touch the small of her back as they chatted,” a source said of Orlando at the Golden Globes event. “Katy was showing Orlando her phone. They were both smiling and laughing and then he took her phone and started typing on it.”

Of course, Katy’s relationship with Orlando is sharing time with her busy schedule, which these days includes not just making music but campaigning for Hillary Clinton and taking care of a new pup, who’s been getting a lot of attention on her Instagram account lately.

Tight clothes are back, people. They’re hot. They feel fresh. They line up with everything that’s happening right now, on social media, and in pop culture—sex and irony and varied interpretations of feminism, with a little trashiness thrown in for good measure.

The jewellery company’s Museum of Style Icons unveiled its new Audrey Hepburnexhibition at a packed launch this week.

Among the eye-catching items to go on display were three backless wedding dresses once owned by curvy Kim.

They included a pink dress worn in March 2014 from London label Awake as well as a cream Chloe coat she wore to Paris fashion week two years ago.

Unveiled to a group of guests who were bussed down from Dublin for the party, the exhibition also contains a large number of clothes worn by Hepburn from both her movies and personal wardrobe.

It also has a number of letters from the actress to her father, who lived in Dublin from the 1960s until his death in 1980.

The show also has dresses from sex symbols January Jones and Christina Hendricks.

Attendees at the launch included former RTE newsreader Anne Doyle as well as Celia Holman Lee.

Jenny Buckley was there with Holly White as well as Aisling O’Loughlin, and Martin Nolan of Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

Newbridge Silverware CEO William Doyle started the museum as a hobby and now curates iconic pieces from auctions that take place all over the world.

10-year old fashion designer proving style is no child’s play

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- Its New Orleans Fashion Week when young local designers get to see their creations come to life on the runway.

News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez met a designer, who’s really young!

kiddesigner6Making her debut at New Orleans Fashion Week is a 10-year old designer from Pass Christian, Mississippi.

With her sewing machine and her measuring tape, 10-year old, Alex Bujan is proving being a fashion designer is no child’s play.

“The most difficult part is drawing because you may mess up and then you have to do it again and again and again,” Bujan said.

kiddesigner8This young designer got her start modeling on the fashion runway, but decided she didn’t want to just wear the clothes; she wanted to design them.

“I thought it would be interesting and cool to try and become a designer, and now I’m here,” she said.

Alex’s friends are her models for Designs by Alexandra Bujan and Tracee Dundas the Creative Director of New Orleans Fashion Week is blown away by her drive and maturiy.

kiddesigner5“I’m going to keep my eye on her and just watch her blossom and grow as a young designer. We’ve got some big plans in the future for her,” Dundas said.

“I really like designing, so I hope it takes me very far,” Bujan said.

Her designs are part of the “Kid’s Runway Day Show” during Fashion Week at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk.

Cheap Chic Weddings Launches the 12th Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest Sponsored by Charmin

For over a decade, the Cheap Chic Weddings Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest has challenged creative minds from across the nation to create a wearable, on-trend wedding dress and corresponding headpiece using only Charmin toilet paper, glue, tape and a needle and thread. The annual event shows how Charmin is not only America’s softest bath tissue but it’s 4x times the strength of other toilet paper brands making it a perfect material for designers to use to create their dresses and models to wear on the runway.

TV Entertaining Team. Fans at home will also be able to choose the winner of the “Fan Favorite” category by voting online at Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com. The first prize winner will walk away with $10,000 while the second and third prize winners will receive $5,000 and $2,500 respectively.

Greek Wedding 2” Star John Corbett Still Dating Bo Derek After 12 Years, Says No Plans for Marriage or Kids


EXCLUSIVE It’s taken 14 years but Nia Vardalos has finally made the follow up to her hit rom-com. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” opens March 25, the same date as another small movie (the behemoth “Batman v. Superman”).


The whole cast returns, including John Corbett, Lainie Kazan, Joey Fatone, Andrea Martin and Michael Constantine. New to the production is Elena Kampouris, who plays the teenage daughter of Toulu (Vardalos) and Ian (Corbett) and British director Kirk Jones (“Nanny McPhee”).


The film’s stars, with the exception of Kazan and Constantine sadly, promoted “MBFGW2” Saturday afternoon at the luxe Mandarin Oriental hotel against the backdrop of a jaw-dropping view of Columbus Circle.


Vardalos and Corbett don’t look like they’ve aged a day since the first film. Self-deprecating and warm, Vardalos is slender and petite and looked great in a short, greenish cocktail dress.


Entering the room, she told journalists, “I decided to go with the color of moldy feta,” she said of her dress. She completed the ensemble with a pair of comfy house slippers.


I asked Vardalos if she ever considered making a trilogy?


“I’m never going to say no again because I said no for so long, so I’m going instead to say this, ‘I’m open!”


Do you think it will take 14 more years?


“No, because I want to use that cast,” she said.


I asked her about the lack of good scripts and parts for women older than Jennifer Lawrence. “I think there’s a value to Jennifer Lawrence because she speaks to a generation and there’s a value to every age of woman on screen and I just can’t whine about it that there aren’t roles for women,” Vardalos told me.


As for the frustrating lack of good roles and stories of older women, she told me, “It’s maddening. It’s maddening. If Sandra Bullock is trying to find a job imagine how hard it is for me? And Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin, so I say I’m pro-woman without being anti-man. The men are well taken care of in this script as are the women. It’s easy to do isn’t it?”


Up next she said was the Epix series, “Graves,” co-starring Nick Nolte and Sela Ward and written by Josh Stern.


She’s also got a writing project in the works. She told me exclusively:


“I’m developing a play Off Broadway,” she said. “I adapted a book. I’m sorry I can’t tell you the title yet.”

When reminded her 11 year-old daughter would soon be a teenager, Vardalos whine, “God I know!”


Vardalos graciously posed for the inevitable endless selfies – the New York junket corps are as bad as the Hollywood Foreign Press when it comes to fawning over celebrities – and finally announced, “I’m going to shuffle off now in my slippers.”


As for Corbett, before exiting he said he was returning for the second season of the F/X comedy, “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.” “We’re shooting right now.”


Corbett, who’s dated Bo Derek for more than a decade, was asked if there was any chance he’d change his mind about marriage and fatherhood. After all, he was told, Hugh Grant, once a confirmed bachelor, became until a father at age 49 and now he has three kids.

“No,” Corbett said, “But I have stronger will power than Hugh Grant.”

Ways Being An Only Child Helped Shape My Style For The Better

Growing up as an only child helped me in a number of ways, ranging from allowing me to become a pretty independent person to helping me feel at ease when meeting new people. But being an only child also helped shape my style in unexpected ways.


Being an only child isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, of course, much like I’m sure growing up in a family with brothers and sisters isn’t always, either. There were plenty of times when my friends were busy, so my collection of My Little Pony’s had to step in. My close buddies would sometimes share things with their siblings instead of me, and I felt a lot of pressure to excelhard at life.


However, there were plenty of great things about being an only child, especially when it came to discovering who I was and how I wanted to portray myself to the world. I was (and still am) a very social person. But whenever I had free time as a kid and teen, I spent it scouring through Vogueand Elle Girl for style inspiration.


I’m not saying that people with siblings haven’t had similar experiences when it comes to finding their own style, but being an only child directly helped me find my own. Here are some ways how.


1. I’m Not Afraid To Look “Silly”

I’ve never had to live in fear of being teased or taunted by siblings. Sure, I might have been bullied by people at school, but this was actually beneficial in the long run and allowed me to see who my real friends were.


2. I’ve Always Felt Totally Free To Experiment

Without the fear of embarrassing a sibling with my own unique sense of style, I could always do what I wanted sartorially, whenever I wanted. I could also try out new styles without the worry of “copying” a sister who tried it first. I’ve always been free to experiment with fashion and beauty in my own time and at my own pace.
