Russia’s R-330Zh Zhitel device is a jamming system specifically designed to attack signals in the 1.164GHz to 1.575GHz frequency bands, which are exactly the GPS bands used by JDAM. The R-330Zh device can cover an area within a range of 30 kilometers and is capable of emitting 10 kilowatts of jamming signals.
Through this technology, Russia has effectively weakened the precision strike capability of JDAM-ER. Although the jammer does not directly cause the JDAM bomb to fail, it greatly reduces its strike effect, making it less effective on the battlefield.
The Pentagon’s response strategy: Home-on-Jam technology
In response to Russia’s electronic warfare interference, the Pentagon quickly took technical improvement measures. SARA began researching this technology as early as 2014 and proved its effectiveness through multiple actual combat exercises. In 2020, the U.S. Air Force conducted relevant tests on the GBU-39/B small diameter bomb, and the results showed that this technology can significantly improve the combat capability of precision-guided bombs in complex electronic warfare environments.
