Freedom Beauty Salon offers discounts to military, first responders

A new beauty salon has opened in downtown Rochester, and the owner is offering discounts for those who help keep the community safe.

Freedom Beauty Salon, located at 7 Hanson St., opened in December. The salon offers discounted haircuts to veterans, those in active military duty, police officers, firefighters and first-responder EMTs, said owner Jenni Olson.

Olson, of Rochester, has previously been the area manager for the Great Clips hair salon in Rochester and Concord, and has also worked at Tresses in Rochester. In opening up her own business, she wanted to offer a place that offers not just haircuts, but full beauty service including hair coloring, waxing, a nail salon and hair styling.

“I want customers to come in and be able to do it all in one facility,” said Olson.

After advice from a friend who works in real estate, she decided to open her own beauty salon.

“I decided it was time. It was now or never,” said Olson, 33.

Olson looked at several possible locations for her business, and the building at 7 Hanson St. seemed ideal.

“I fell in love with the building,” she said. “It’s an older building, I like primitive. This building has a lot of charm to me.”

The location is also desirable – the salon is located in downtown, but is tucked away from the main strip, she said.

Olson signed the three-year lease on the building in October. Although she may consider purchasing the building down the road, she will be taking her new business venture one step at a time.

Before opening, there were two months of renovations that included new flooring, repainting the walls, installing new plumbing and electrical work, and putting in the insulation in the basement.

So far, Olson has had business from many of her regular customers that she had gotten to know through her work at previous salons. Newer customers have been slower to get through the doors, and Olson hopes to see more veterans, active military members, and first-responders walk through her doors for discounted haircuts.

In a recent interview, Olson spoke about her decision to name her salon after the word “freedom.”

“‘Freedom’ came to me because I never worked at a salon where you could be who you are,” she said.

At Freedom Beauty Salon, Olson is striving to bring positive energy to her clients. She said she is an upbeat, happy person “and people feel that.”

As she spoke about her work in the beauty industry, Olson said, “It’s my passion. It’s my happy spot. I love making people feel better.”

“I want to run a salon the right way,” she said. “I want to have a positive experience, with morals that I know are true. I always want to be true to who I am and always be true to my employees.”

So far Olson has one employee, who is the lead stylist. But Olson will soon also have an apprentice and additional employees down the road, she said.

“It’s a great start. I’m more than lucky with what I have,” said Olson.

The salon also features a playroom for kids. Olson said she wants her clients to be comfortable bringing their children.

“When mothers get their haircuts the children have somewhere to go,” said Olson.

Former Beauty Queen Kills Husband After Rough Sex

A former beauty queen from Bulgaria is being accused of accidentally killing her husband after a rough sex session.

Anita Meyzer and Nikolai Dimoy were having a moment that seemed right out of “Fifty Shades Of Grey” and practicing BDSM, that includes acts like bondage and masochism. During one of their latest fantasies, things got out of hand with the latter losing his life when things got out of control.

Anita explained that she was a wife that needed to satisfy his man and would always record their sessions, according to Peru.com. She added that her husband had strange fetishes and one night he asked her to tie him up with plastic ties around his arms, neck and legs.

During the bondage session, her husband tried to break free and remove the ties, but ended up tightening them and strangling himself to death.

Where this story takes a turn is that Meyzer initially lied to police saying that she was out shopping and when she returned home she found her husband dead. To make matters worse, she tried to hide the cable ties and attempted to bribe a cop as well so the truth about his accidental death wouldn’t come to life.

Now Anita Meyzer has to face the consequences for her actions. She will spend three years in jail.

She said: “I’m sorry for what happened, for 4 months I have been locked up and wondering how can this happen to me – I’m the cause of death of the person I love most.”

Beauty vlogger Chloe Morello explains why POWDER makes the best primer when applied before your foundation

Earlier this year, she revealed she shaves her face in pursuit of a silky smooth complexion.

And now, beloved Australian beauty YouTuber, Chloe Morello, has let the world in on another of her skin secrets, revealing that she applies powder instead of regular primer before her foundation.

Classy Long White Tailor Made Evening Prom Dress (LFNAE0056)

In a video shared with her two million YouTube followers last week, the 26-year-old social media star explained why she finds powder to be the best primer.

Chloe Morello also recommended her followers try the trick, especially if their skin is on the oily side.

‘Normally, all my primers are either liquid primers or a cream, but I’ve been using this for the past three weeks now, and it is amazing!,’ Ms Morello said towards the beginning of the eight minute video.

‘I like it because I don’t have to powder over the top as it’s already got that really matte finish.’

The vlogger then showed just how the Make-up Store Australia powder primer works as a mattifying product, by applying it to one half of her face and leaving the other half without any product.

After applying foundation to both sides of her face, one half of her skin looked matte, while the other was luminescent and dewy.

‘This side of my face just looks so much more smooth,’ Ms Morello said.

‘And then this side of my face… you can still see my pores. It’s just like my skin before, but with an even colour.’

For those who might not have the AUD $75 required to buy the powder that Chloe Morello uses in her video, other beauty experts have similar – and cheaper – recommendations.

Montréal-based makeup pro Eddie Malter, from L’Oréal Paris, said that any powder dusted over the face before you apply foundation helps to give your make-up something to stick to.

The idea is that powder holds onto make-up better than a primer, especially in hot temperatures when your skin hits overdrive with oil production.

Other experts have even gone as far as to suggest that baby powder works in much the same way as primer – a great base coat for a fraction of the price.

Something to bear in mind during humid times…

Here Are 5 Beauty Trends That Should Stay In 2016

Yes, we all are grateful in some way or the other that this year is coming to an end. Not only has 2016 been a rollercoaster ride for all of us, but even the beauty industry witnessed some strange trends. Think about saplings manicure, claw nails, and all things unicorn – even unicorn highlighter. We appreciate evolution in beauty, but here are five major trends that we feel should stay in 2016.

Bold boxy eyebrows

bold-boxy-eyebrows.jpg

pics:cocktail dresses

Yes, we know that thin eyebrows are not the trend de jour. We are not talking about the un-groomed eyebrows (we love those). It’s about the boxy Instagram brows. There is something about those boxy lines and the dramatic arch that makes the eyebrows look fake. Your brows can still look full, but you want them to be soft.

Claw nails

claw-nails.jpgCan these just be gone already? We thought that they wouldn’t make a return after 2015, but they came back looking sharper than ever. Let’s not make them a mainstay in the coming year. After all, they are not even practical.

Kylie Jenner lips

kylie-jenner-lips.jpgWe don’t understand the obsession with over-lined and over-injected lips. Yes, lining your lips a bit with a nude liner to create a fuller version works. But, going all they way out to inject to the degree that makes your pout looks bee-stung is just not cool. This practice not only looks fake, but also makes your face appear bigger than it is. It’s time we bid adieu to it.

Heavy strobe

heavy-strobe.jpgWe are not asking you to give up on your highlighter. We love strobing. High-beam cheekbones may gain you a lot of “likes” on social media, but an intense strobe doesn’t necessarily look great IRL. You don’t want your make-up to look chunky, you want it to look flawless. So, dust your highlighter with a light hand.

Super matte lips

matte-lips-.jpgAgain, liquid lipsticks look great in pictures, but their texture is not very flattering. They give a very dry feeling and the lips start cracking in no time. If you still love your matte lipstick then make sure to exfoliate your lips, and keep your pout well hydrated so that it glides easily.

HiMirror unveils smart beauty mirror that analyzes your skin

Mirror mirror, on the wall. What shade works best with my skin tone in this light?

HiMirror analyzes your skin.

photos:prom dresses cheap

Image Credit: HiMirrorHiMirror is introducing a smart beauty mirror today that analyzes your skin.

The company says its mirror is like having a beauty and health consultant in your home every day. The HiMirror recommends what kind of beauty products you should buy based on your skin condition, local weather, and other factors.

The device costs $189 for the standard mirror and $259 for the device with multi-ambiance makeup light. The product is a companion for the Smart Body Scale ($79), which provides similar body and weight analysis and corresponding exercise solutions.

HiMirror is approximately 11 inches x 16.5 inches, and it is humidity-resistant. It can be easily installed in a bathroom, closet, or bedroom walkway, affixing to a wall or a mirror. An integrated high-resolution camera and proprietary technology offer in-depth complexion analysis.

By taking a makeup-free photo, HiMirror detects dark spots, red spots, dark eye circles, wrinkles, pores, fine lines, and other complexion elements. From these, it creates a personalized Skin Index Synthesis report — an evaluation of skin firmness, brightness, texture, clarity, and overall healthiness.

Wi-Fi-connected and Bluetooth-enabled, HiMirror can also display the local weather, sync with Google Calendar, and even play Spotify. With its facial and voice recognition capabilities, HiMirror can also assist multiple family members, tracking their individual skin needs and recommendations.

HiMirror keeps an ongoing log of your skin to track skincare goals and the results of products used. It also allows users to provide feedback on products. Your skincare products can be scanned into the system by bar code, with reminders sent for any product expirations. HiMirror comes with a mobile app, letting you track and tweak your skin care needs on the go.

Accessories being rolled out along with HiMirror include Smart Body Scale, which allows users to measure their weight, body mass index, body fat, water level content, muscle mass, bone weight, resting metabolism, body type, etc.

“We are excited to bring to market the first-ever smart beauty mirror, truly revolutionizing the modern beauty routine,” said Simon Shen, CEO of Taipei-based New Kinpo Group, in a statement. “HiMirror is a technology-driven tool that will become indispensable for consumers — an essential part of their daily beauty routine, helping them evaluate their skin and what works for their individual skincare needs.”

How Glossier’s Emily Weiss Is Using The Internet To Build A Beauty Brand For Generation Instagram

There are beauty brands that consider social media when they develop marketing campaigns. And then there’s Glossier, the cult favorite skincare company that designs its products hoping — knowing, even — that young women will want to post their purchases on Instagram.

Take Glossier’s $22 face masks, the two-year-old brand’s highest-rated product in terms of customer reviews. Its pastel-hued jars were conceived with smartphone photography in mind.

“We spent an enormous amount of time with an illustrator designing a really ornate, colorful illustration and sticker for the top of the product,” said Emily Weiss, the company’s founder and CEO. “You’re so excited to see that and take it out and take a picture of it, like you would food — the perspective of holding your iPhone over a plate of food.”

Glossier’s face masks include ornately-designed tops, intended to be shared on social media. Photo c/o Glossier.

Have a look at the #Glossier hashtag on Instagram and it’s clear Weiss had the right idea. The brand’s millennial fan base is so devoted that its products regularly rack up waiting lists in the tens of thousands. Theybuy $60 sweatshirts with the company’s name across the chest. Traditional luxury beauty brands can only dream of inspiring that sort of loyalty.

Weiss takes us behind the scenes of Glossier’s early days on this week’s episode of Forbes’ Million$, a podcast hosted by yours truly. Every other Tuesday, I talk with self-made women entrepreneurs about the good, the bad, and the ugly of founding and funding a business.

The 2015 Forbes 30 Under 30 list member tells how she raised over $10 million in venture capital funding during Glossier’s first year to grow the direct-to-consumer company.

She also discusses why having a woman investor on board was crucial to Glossier’s early success. Branded e-commerce pioneer Kirsten Green of all-women VC firm Forerunner Ventures led the company’s 2013 seed round.

When Weiss approached Green, it was with a question rather than a fully-formed pitch: “Wouldn’t it be so cool if we could use the Internet to build a better beauty brand?”

Weiss came armed with insight from her popular beauty blog Into The Gloss, which started as a side project in 2010 when she was a fashion assistant at Vogue. She’d work on Into The Gloss between 4am and 7am every morning, doing photo shoots on weekends.

“There was a full year between the launch of Into The Gloss and when I quit my day job,” she said. “I think that’s important in an era when there are a lot of inspirational quotes on Instagram telling you to follow your dreams and seize the day.”

Listen to Million$ podcast here. Subscribe to Million$ on iTunes, and if you like what you hear, please feel free to rate and review. There’ll be new episodes online every other Tuesday.

Maddie and Tae, who made separate boxes, included Kaplan MD Lip 20 Treatment and Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, respectively. Weirdly enough, their lips and faces gets extra dry from singing into a microphone and traveling all the time.
