大学生の時、ふと思い立ってウッドラケットを張った。
ラケットはリサイクルショップで入手したカワサキのYouth Power。
ストリングに選んだのはキルシュバウムのスーパースマッシュ。
80年代まで活躍したウッドラケットと90年代より現れしポリエステルストリングの夢の競演・・・
まあ、感想としては最悪の一言ですよね。
テニスなんかとてもできたもんじゃない。
ただ、ポリを差し引いてもウッドラケットはとても使える気がしない。
打つ度にこんなにフレームがブレていたら大変だ。
一時期はウッドラケットとカーボンラケットが混在していたらしいが、そりゃ皆カーボンに移るでしょ。
そしてカーボンと言ってもグラス系とかメタル系とか(単体？カーボンとのハイブリッド？詳しくは知りませんが)分別されていたみたいで現代とはえらい違い。
ウッドからカーボンへラケットの素材が大きく変化した時代、革命と言われる訳ですね。
今もテキストリームやらグラフィンやらありますけど、素材の特性は何だか似たようなものですし、メーカーの売りみたいな印象が強いですよね。
あとマグネシウムを使ったヘッドのMXGもありますけどどうなんでしょ。
素材で大きな革命を起こすには本当に打球感や性能、ラケットの使い方とかとにかく色々大きく変わる事が必要なんでしょうね。
・・・ウッド→カーボン以上の変化なんて可能なのか・・・？
ストリングも今じゃもうポリ以外の選択肢は考えられない。
モノやマルチで同じボールを打てる気がしない。
と言いつつも柔らかいストリングとのハイブリッドもプロでは受け入れられていて、そもそもモノもマルチもウッドラケットのように駆逐されているのでもない。
となると、ストリングにはまだまだ既存素材を一気に吹き飛ばすような製品が出てくる可能性がラケットよりはあるかも？
