という事でFURI SPORTのARMA PRO98なんですね～
まあプレミアムデモで借りただけなんですけど。
ニューヨークから日本に上陸した新興メーカー、しかし実は日本のラケットスペシャリスト、有名メーカーでラケット開発に携わったりチューンナップショップのラケットスタジオを創設した経歴を持つ坂本さんが丸々監修したというラケット。
世の中、気になるラケットは沢山あれど結局はまー打てないなら打たなくてもいいかな別に・・・みたいなのってあるじゃないですか。
で、これはそうとはいかないな・・・ってタイプだと思ったんですね。
ARMA PROは98インチと101インチがあってどちらもボックスフレームで16×19。
厚みは98が23-22-20、101が24-23-22でトップ部が一番厚く、フレーム上部左右に30Tカーボン、シャフト部にフラックスを搭載・・・
とまあ、スペックを聞くとプリンスだったりトアルソン、バボラで聞いたような単語がちらほらと散りばめられていて、ひねた言い方をすると新鮮味が薄いところもある。
ボックスフレームの需要とか使用選手って年々少なくなっているし、最近のプレステージやピュアストライクVS、CX200とかを見ても純粋なボックス形状から変化を余儀なくされている昨今。
プロスタッフもプリンスのツアーもボックスとラウンドの複合体を名乗ってるし、昔懐かしの打球感の再現を頑張りはしているものの・・・
で、このARMA PRO98はトップ部が厚いテーパードビームで変則的だけど、パッと見は見事なボックス形状・・・
手元に届いて気付いたんだけど、ホントにボックス的と言いますか、正面厚がやたらと太くないですか?
単に横が20mm以上あるから、というだけでは説明つかなそうな感じ。
ボックスの良いところってごっついところかなぁって僕は思うんですけど、にしても、こんな剛性感は久々と言いますか・・・
手持ちのプロゾーン2とか、ごっついイメージのピュアストライクと見比べてみても明らかにARMA PROは太い。
これより太いラケットある？
って思い返してみると、思い浮かんだのは・・・ウイルソンのウルトラ2(古ッッッッッ)
1984年のラケット・・・
高校生の頃にリサイクルショップでなぜか買って打った事があるんスね自分・・・
そんまま学校で無くして今でも母校のどこかで眠ってるかもしれない(爆)
そのウルトラ2もやたらとシャフトが太くて、シャフト間の空間が狭くて、そしてごっつい打球感だった。
そう、このラケットってシャフトの真ん中の空間が割と狭め。
たぶん、ウルトラ2が出た頃ってウッドラケットからカーボンラケットへの転換期で、一本シャフトから変わっていったから、最初の方のカーボンラケットってシャフトの間の間隔が狭かった・・・
ウッドラケットからの変化だから昔のラケットはボックスだった、ごっついフレームだった・・・
世代じゃないから知らんけど。
でももうひとつ、昨日ふと気付いたんですが
ARMA PRO、グリップもなんか思ったより短くない・・・？
自分はグリップテープ割と長めに巻くんですが、にしてもこの違和感・・・はたして気のせいなのか？
グリップが短いラケット、というのも昔のラケットの特徴と聞いている。
昔の人は片手のバックハンドが主流で、両手打ちが普及して世のラケットのグリップ部分は長くなっていった・・・らしいけど、どうなんだ？
そう考えていくとARMA PRO、太いボックス形状と短いグリップ、このラケットの狙いは・・・
それに実際の使用感も若造の自分には違和感がある。(ようやく本題)
ボックスフレームの特徴ってしなる打球感じゃないですか、でもARMAに感じるの撓りより剛性感。
そりゃあ、そんなごっついシャフトしてたら剛性あるでしょ。
と言いつつも、さっき自分はボックスフレームはごっついところが良い！とのたまっていた。
バコり易いってイメージあるじゃないですか、特にピュアコンとかプレステージは。
相手のボールに打ち負けない安心感ある打球感・・・それでいて柔らかさ、球持ち感があるのがボックスフレーム。
ARMA PROだとそれらより剛性感が何よりも強い。
しっかりし過ぎていてボールをいとも容易く飛ばす。
この点に関してはストリングを38ポンドで張っているのもちょっと悪かったかなと思うけど、にしたって薄いボックスフレームは本来ボールを飛ばす時のダルさ、球持ち感があるものだと思っていたが。
最近のラケットであれば薄いラケットでも飛ばし易さはあるでしょうけど、この剛性は他ではあまり感じないタイプの打球感・・・
いや、ウルトラ2が売っていた時代にはこういう打球感があったんじゃないのか？
高校生の頃の記憶だとウルトラ2は硬いって感想だったはず(うろ覚え)
ちょっとウルトラ2とは時代が外れるかもしれないけどヤマハのXAM8、これも例によってリサイクルショップで買って使った事あったんですけど、80年代～ぎり90年代前半ごろのラケットではなかったでしょうか、このラケットも薄いボックスながらやたらと硬く、パワーを感じさせるラケットだった。
現代だと薄いボックスフレーム＝柔らかいコントロール重視のラケットって評価が鉄板でしょうが、80年代はどうでしたか？
俺は俺が生まれる前に生まれたラケットの事なんてさっぱりですがね、ウッドからカーボンに変わって大きく変わったのはラケットの強度、ボールスピードじゃないんでしょうか。
プロスタッフもグラファイトも、当時評価されたのはコントロールよりもパワーの方だったのでは・・・なんちゃって？
ラケットは硬い方がボールが飛びますからねぇ。
と言ってもARMA PRO98のRA値は64で柔らかい方、にも関わらずシャフトはしっかりしていて、ボールが飛ぶ。
どこにRA値64の柔らかさがあるんだ？38ポンドのせいでフレームの柔らかさも感じる前にかっ飛ばしちゃってるか？
やっぱラケットを評価するならもう少し硬めに張ってラケットと腕をいじめなきゃねぇ・・・
ストリングもFURI SPORTのオレンジクラッシュってポリなんだけど、説明だと爆発的なパワー、海外のサイトにいたってはアルパワーやポリツアーレブに匹敵するとまで豪語しているし、ボールの飛びには困らない。
いや、それでもフレームのこの剛性感こそホントにARMA PROの特徴で武器なんだと思う。
加えてトップ部が一番ぶ厚い形状、プリンスのCTS形状と似たこの造りで更にボールを容易に飛ばせるようにする。
自分、頭が太いフレームって何だかなぁ・・・とスペックを見てる段階ではイマイチな印象でしたが、実際に使うとやはりその効果はテキメン。
↑の写真のファントムF1もそうなんですけど、飛びますし操作性も薄いシャフトで確保される。
そうしてARMA PRO98の最大厚は23mmとなり、ライバル格はEゾーン98やエスマッハプロになるか。
しかしラウンド形状の彼らに対しARMAはボックス形状、そこをトップ部の厚いフレームなので飛びで遅れを取らない。
ラウンドはボールを弾くが、AMRAのボックスフレームは強靭なフレームでボールを押し込む。
この感覚はラウンド形状には真似できない部分・・・他のボックスフレームでさえもどうだろうか。
ただARMAは球持ちより剛性が勝るせいか、ボールの飛び出しがやや早く、特にバックハンドがしっかり振り切って抑えないと飛びが強過ぎる場面があった。
普通のボックスと思って使うと予想以上のパワーに返って苦戦してしまうかもしれない。
苦戦せず使いこなせるとしたら、80年代のボックスフレームを愛用していたベテラン層・・・パワーアップした反発力で当時のような使用感を40年後の今でも使えるようにしよう、そういった意図があったりする・・・のか？

そうか、1980年代って40年前の話・・・当時の20代、30代は60、70・・・
10代だったとしても50代、はたしてARMA PROのパワーは満足頂けるのか。
また、80年代のラケットと比べると当然と言うか、ARMA PROは305gと軽い重量。
30代男性としてはまだまだ305gじゃ物足りない、もっと加重していけばフレームの強さと相まってパワーもコントロールも更にアップできると思う。
ベテランには丁度良いのかもしれないけど、最近のラケット全般に思うんだけど、中途半端に軽く作られると、フレームがしっかりしてるから逆に自分の腕が負けちゃうような感覚がある。
しっかりしてるけど軽いから、ボールの衝撃に対応しきれずフレームがぐらついて・・・
これに加重すると安定する感じがする、というのはもしかして老害的な意見になるのだろうか、現代のラケットの事情からすると。
ファントムF1もさぁ、305gに18×18のストリングパターンで、打った時の安定感がどうも物足りない・・・。
まあ重さ関しては人それぞれってところになるから置いておくしかないですね(笑)
加重すれば古きよき時代のフレームをリバイバル、そのままでもベテラン層を助ける操作性。
