海老名市民である僕ですがロマンスカーには一度も乗った事がありませんでした。
駅のホームや奥の車両基地で昔からずっとその姿は見ていましたが、普通列車で小田原は３０分、新宿は５０分ぐらいで着くのですからメリットをあまり感じられず、乗る機会は一向に来ません。

小田急の満員電車に身を投じ、就活の為に都会へ足を運ぶ日々。
行きも帰りもろくに座れず疲弊するこの思い、隣の市に住む同じサークルのＫとばったり出くわしてこれを分かち合おうじゃないか！と語ったら返ってきたのがまさかの「帰りはロマンスカーに乗ってる。」
この頃の僕と言えば金欠過ぎて東京から帰る切符代がギリギリ足りず、下車駅の２、３駅前で降りて徒歩での帰宅を強行する程に苦しんでいた。(金下ろせよ)

確かにロマンスカーなら海老名－新宿間をたったの３７分で移動する事が可能だが？
でも快速急行だと４３分、急行だと５０分の所要時間・・・大して変わらなくない？？？
１３分を短縮する為だけに特急料金を払えると言うのか・・・！？
とまあ自分には疑問だったのですが、ロマンスカーに乗る余裕を見せるＫは座れる席を必ず確保できるメリットがデカいと力説。

そんなやり取りから３年、ふと特急列車に乗ってどこかへ行きたくなったので大学の友人と共に秩父へ。
紅葉の季節だしね。
とにかく第一に特急列車に乗る！をテーマに手軽に行ける場所を探したところ、出てきたのが池袋－秩父間のレッドアロー。
そう、僕はレッドアローに乗る為に池袋までやってきた。
