テンション維持率、なんて言葉をよく耳にします。
ポリを選ぶ時には特にこの要素が重視されていると思います。
昔、お店で働かせて頂いていた頃、製品について日々勉強していく中である日、ふと思いました。

現状、テンション維持率で検索をかけると多くのページがヒットします。
ウィルソンのウェブマガジン、ポリファイバーといったテニスメーカーが「テンション維持率」という言葉を使用しているのも見られます。
一般的に用いられていると言っても過言ではない「テンション維持率」という性能の要素ですが、「率」の部分、この字かあるからには誰もが計算された数値を連想するのではないでしょうか。
しかし、テンション維持率の明確な値というものはあまり目にしません。
尤も、打率とか勝率を高い低いとざっぱりと表現する事も多いですし、「率」という言葉は目安として良い悪いが分かれば数字を出す必要は無いのでしょう。
テンション維持率、メーカーによっては新商品を出した際に、旧来製品との性能差のグラフを作ってアピールしている事もありますが、大体の場合は自社製品との比較だったり、そもそも比較相手が分からなかったり何だかんだで不明確な部分も感じます。
一体何を基準としてテンション維持率とやらを算出してるいのか。
率と称するならば、張り上げ後何％テンションがダウンとか、そういう情報であると受け取る人もいるのではないでしょうか。
この疑問がふっと沸いて以降は、自分はこの性能についてはテンション維持率ではなくテンション維持性と呼ぶようにしています。
呼称についての話となると、「ガット」と「ストリング」についてもよく言われる話題かと思います。

また、ベタな話ではありますが、ストリングにおいて「コントロール」というのも性能として注目される部分ですが、それもちょっと不明瞭であると思います。
反発力がある、スピンがある、耐久性がある、柔らかい、これらをそれぞれ要素を持ったストリングであれば、エッグパワーとか、ポリツアースピンとか、いかにもそれを目的としたストリングが出てきます。
これらのタイプは何度か打てば、ボールが飛ぶ、スピンがかかるタイプとして作られたのだと割と実感できるタイプだと思います。
しかしコントロールが良いストリング、となるとこれらのストリング程の選び易さというのが無いように思えます。
ボールの飛距離にストリングが大きく寄与するにしても、ボールをコントロールする事については使用者自身の腕前への依存が大きいのではないでしょうか。

トアルソンにはピンポイントショットが煽り文句のプロフォーカスがあります。
作られた時代が違うとはいえ、この２種は硬さが正反対のタイプ。
他に例を挙げるとポリファイバーのＴＣＳはタッチ・コントロール・スピンの略であり、プリンスのツアーＸＣはエクストラ・コントロール。
張った事はありませんがＴＣＳは柔らかいらしく、ツアーＸＣはカタログ上ではプリンスポリの中で最もソフトの数値が低いらしい。
コントロール性を求めているストリングなのに硬かったり柔らかかったりで、どちらがコントロール性能が良いのかは、使用者の主観の影響が大きくなると思います。
恐らく、大抵はボールが飛ばないストリングをコントロール重視としている場合が多いと思われますが、それはコントロール云々ではなくただの飛ばないストリングのような気もします。
製品の特徴としてアピールするのは良いとしても、何を持ってしてコントロールが良いと呼ぶのか、もう少し分かり易い情報があれば良いなと思います。
